George Clooney Celebrates Family at His Ides of March Premiere

George Clooney had the company of his Ides of March costars Evan Rachel Wood, who was decked out in head-to-toe maroon Gucci, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Jeffrey Wright for last night's NYC premiere. We managed to snag a few minutes with George himself - and he's just as handsome in person! George spoke to us about the importance of filming the movie, which he directed, in the Midwest and, most importantly, in Cincinnati. He told us, "My father was an anchorman in Cincinnati, and I knew the area really well. I worked there plenty. I worked at the ladies shoe store there and sold men's suits in the area, so I knew most of the area." His father, Nick, was on hand for the afterparty at the Metropolitan Club along with George's mom, Nina. George Clooney and Stacy Keibler may not have walked the red carpet together, but they did make a statement at last night's Toronto International Film Festival premiere of The Ides of March. George didn't pose with his new girlfriend, Stacy, though he did get cozy with his cast including Ryan Gosling and Paul Giamatti. Toronto is Ryan's hometown, and he brought his mom, Donna Gosling, as his date for the evening. Before the screening Ryan and George started the festivities with a cocktail party at the Grey Goose Soho House Pop-Up Lounge, where there were hugs galore between the handsome actors. Ryan and George also showed their chemistry at The Ides of March press conference earlier in the day. Stacy was right behind George as they returned to their hotel at the end of the evening, and he even sweetly stopped to grab her hand and make sure she was OK as they made their way through the fan frenzy in the lobby. Ryan, meanwhile, was on his own when he called it a night, but he did make time to stop for a few pictures before heading to his room. George Clooney Hits the Red Carpet in a Tux With His Glamorous Costars

George Clooney stepped out with his The Ides of March costars in Venice today. Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, Paul Giamatti, and Philip Seymour Hoffman posed together at the movie's premiere, which was the first of the Venice Film Festival. The film's other leading man, Ryan Gosling, apparently didn't make the trip overseas since he's busy working on The Place Beyond the Pines and promoting Drive. George's pals Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford, in Robert Cavalli, came out to show their support, though, as did Diane Kruger, who sparkled in an Elie Saab gown. The Ides of March cast was up early for a photocall to promote the project this morning, though they stepped up their looks for this evening's event with Marisa donning a yellow number by Marios Schwab and Evan debuting a dramatic white dress. The glamorous fun is just beginning since Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Selma Blair are a few of the stars expected to make appearances at the festival.

George Clooney Kicks Off a Star-Studded Venice Film Festival With His Ides of March Ladies

George Clooney was the lucky man in the middle between Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei this morning at a photo call for The Ides of March during the first day of the Venice Film Festival. Evan was decked out in a suit from Dolce & Gabanna while Marisa wore a dress from Preen. They were joined by leading men Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman as well as writer Grant Heslov, though it seems Ryan Gosling has yet to get in on the fun. George made a grand entrance into the city yesterday, arriving on boat with glamorous friends like Cindy Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber. Cindy, Rande, and George were fresh off a fun weekend at the actor's Lake Como estate, which also hosted his movie buddies Marisa and Evan. George is currently all about his political thriller, but he just pulled the plug on another project - George dropped out of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which is to be directed by Steven Soderbergh. We'll get another glimpse of George and his cast later today, as they're expected to be the first stars to dress up for a red carpet premiere!

The Lincoln Lawyer: Hop In

After films like Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Surfer Dude, and Fool's Gold, Matthew McConaughey hasn't exactly had the best track record as of late. So can a movie about a money-grubbing lawyer with a license plate that reads "NTGUILTY" actually be the way to break his pattern of bad movies? The answer is yes: The Lincoln Lawyer is an entertaining thriller that does more than put the actor's charm on display.

Based on the novel by Michael Connelly, the film centers on Mick Haller (McConaughey), a smooth-talking criminal attorney who's a hustler to his core. He represents the underbelly of LA - bikers, prostitutes, druggies - and his methods of doing business are anything but conventional. Instead of an office, Mick prefers to work from his car (a Lincoln town car per the title) where he wheels and deals. As one character remarks, Mick would've done pretty well for himself on the streets; he knows whose palm to grease to get what he wants whether it's a photographer with valuable video or a local cop. That may make Mick sound like a two-dimensional sleazeball and sometimes he is, but there's also more to him than meets the eye.

Mick has run into his share of shady lowlifes over the years, but perhaps none has ever frightened him as much as his latest client, Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe). A playboy with deep pockets, Louis has been convicted of assault after being arrested in a beaten-up prostitute's apartment with blood on his hands. He swears he's innocent, and Mick believes him - at first. But after inconsistencies crop up in Louis's story, Mick starts to question the man he's dealing with and his own conscience. That's the thing about Mick; even though he represents some scumbags, he's actually kind of a good guy himself. The father to a young daughter, he's still on good terms with his ex-wife (Marisa Tomei) and his friendship with his detective (William H. Macy) is surprisingly sweet amidst their sarcastic back-and-forth banter.

Mick is a likable character thanks to the script, but it's McConaughey who really makes him work. From the opening scene when he flashes his white smile at the camera to when he's staring down Louis in fury, McConaughey embodies Mick's range of emotions and elevates what's essentially a popcorn flick. The rest of the actors turn in solid performances as well. Tomei plays tough but vulnerable, and Phillippe runs the gamut from a stuck-up but silly brat to downright psychotic.

There's a surprising amount of humor for a legal thriller, but some of the laughs are unintentional as a result of the dialogue. Mick is supposed to be a slick guy, and the script wants to knock you over the head to remind you of this fact, but in most cases, McConaughey pulls it off. With his Southern drawl delivery, he's still delightful to watch - and he doesn't even have to take off his shirt.
