Carrie, Taylor, Gwyneth, and Leighton Make a Strong Showing at the CMA Awards

The red carpet at the 2010 CMA Awards in Nashville brought together lovely ladies from both the music and acting worlds last night. Cohost Carrie Underwood chose a slate gray Talbot Runhof gown for her arrival while Gwyneth Paltrow went with a sexy, side-baring Atelier Versace dress for her country music debut. Gwyneth's Country Strong costar Leighton Meester mixed things up in Emilio Pucci and Taylor Swift went with a bold red Monique Lhuillier. W cover girl Katherine Heigl, who was there to support her brother-in-law Lady Antebellum lead singer Charles Kelley, showed up in a bright blue strapless Farah Angsana number and was just one of the gorgeous girls with a flawless face.

Carrie opened the show with a musical number alongside Brad Paisley, who was named Entertainer of the Year, before changing into an array of gorgeous looks throughout the night. Nicole Kidman watched from the audience in white Dolce & Gabbana as her husband Keith Urban took the stage while Katherine and Josh Kelley cheered on Lady Antebellum as they accepted two statues. Gwyneth geared up for her big night with a pint of beer, and her much-anticipated live performance didn't disappoint - what did you think? She was game for a little teasing by Carrie and Brad, who asked if she could score them Coldplay tickets, though Chris Martin wasn't there to watch his wife's musical number. Taylor Swift didn't continue her winning streak, but she did take the stage to perform "Back to December" - congrats to everyone honored during country's big evening!

Taylor, Carrie, Sheryl, and Hayden Meet John Mayer's Ab Situation at the CMT Awards!

Blond hair ruled on the red carpet at last night's CMT Music Awards in Nashville. Taylor Swift mixed things up with a slightly edgier look than we're used to from her, straightening out those trademark curls. Carrie Underwood stood out in pink as both country princesses headed in to see what would come of their three nominations apiece. Brand-new mom of two Sheryl Crow displayed her rocking legs, which had an especially nice glow after her recent bikinis Bahamas vacation with her son Wyatt. Faith Hill was glamorous as ever while Hayden Panettiere showed some skin in her lacy cutout dress.

Kid Rock played host for the award show and kept things light with a Kanye West joke to kick things off. Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, and Carrie Underwood were the big winners - check out the whole list here. Keith gave a heartfelt thank you to his wife Nicole Kidman who skipped the red carpet but was supporting him all night long from her seat. Carrie planted a kiss on her fiancé Mike Fisher and later made a speech that included an emphatic "Awesome fans! Awesome, awesome, amazing, awesome, awesome!" Keith also performed with John Mayer, for which the guys spent the day practicing. Mayer's mystery illness didn't slow down his sense of humor as he flashed his abs to compare with Jersey Shore's The Situation, who was of course there with a few of his castmates. Carrie and Brad Paisley were among the evening's other musical acts as the country world gathered together to celebrate their genre and Nashville in the wake of the city's recent tragic flood.

Taylor Swift took a jab at Kanye West and Darius Rucker busted onto the country music scene, where he was welcomed with open arms. VH1 Divas: Miley Calls Kanye Disrespectful, True Blood's Sam Takes on Twilight's Jacob, and Paula Channels Ellen!

The star-studded VH1 Divas kicked off last night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and new diva-inductees like Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, Miley Cyrus, and Kelly Clarkson walked the red carpet in their glamorous gowns. Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port looked gorgeous and sparkly, and we'll have more on LC's possible LA Candy movie deal later. Miley weighed in on the Taylor/Kanye incident, calling him out as disrespectful. Kelly also had some things to say about it as well as the Paula/Ellen change on American Idol. Sam Trammell, who plays Sam Merlotte on True Blood, also told us he thinks his shape-shifter character could take on Taylor Lautner's Jacob - check out the interviews below!

Paula Abdul opened the night with a surprise performance and jokingly introduced the live show saying "I'm Paula Abdul and this is NOT American Idol." Later in the night she came out dressed as Ellen DeGeneres, dancing across the stage before saying "All kidding aside - [I have] nothing but love for Ellen, and I wish you the best of luck and congratulations on your new gig." There were many performances and duets to enjoy, like Jennifer Hudson and Stevie Wonder, as well as solos by all the divas like Jordin Sparks. Miley on Taylor/Kanye VMA incident: "I think it's just disrespectful so I think the best thing is - I probably would have done what [Taylor] did and just walk away from it because she looks better than he does."
Sam on Sam Merlotte vs. Jacob Black: "Is he tall? I think he's really tall . . . Oh is that just in the movie? I could probably take him because I could just turn into some huge animal and just take him. Yeah, I could just turn into a big bull and take him."
Kelly on whether she has words of encouragement for Taylor Swift: "I don't think she needs any. She handled it really well and she's just a really sweet girl. I love Taylor and she knows I do. I keep asking her to write me some songs, I love her writing. The whole situation in general was the straw that broke the camel's back. Not only that situation. Unfortunately Kanye was the straw that broke the camel's back. But there's a lot of crappy things that go on in the industry and it's just not right. This is supposed to be fun. We're not scientists, we're not doing anything mind-blowing. We should all be having fun and complimenting each other and lifting each other up. I don't get it."
Kelly on taking stage with Paula, and Paula leaving Idol: "I'm used to that! We've been doing off and on for seven years; we all end up at the same shows. So I'm so used to seeing her everywhere. I don't even know enough about [Paula leaving Idol] but I think she's probably ready. I mean they've done like nine seasons. It's pretty cool she's going off and doing something on her own and right after it she's hosting VH1 Divas. Oh my God, she's performing and I saw rehearsals and it's insane. I'm like a 12-year-old again and singing 'Straight Up.' We're all dying backstage."

Bikini-Clad Country Stars Discuss Diet and Self-Esteem

Not one, not two, but three country music stars are showing off their bikini bodies on the cover of the July issue of Shape magazine. LeAnn Rimes, Martina McBride, and Julianne Hough look smokin' in their metallic suits. The ladies admit it takes work to look so trim and tell Shape that, as role models, it's important for their fans (and Martina's daughters) to know they take a healthy approach.

The singers chat about how frustrating it can be to watch their husbands scarf down anything they want to eat and confide that being in the spotlight isn't always peachy. All three women take responsibility for promoting a healthy way of life, especially eating a well-balanced diet, and emphasize that beauty isn't just a physical attribute. Julianne won me over with this statement:

There are a lot of teenagers out there who look at me and say, "Well, she's 21, I want to look like her." But I want everyone to know - especially young girls - I eat. I am not starving myself. I'm concerned about young women and their self-esteem being based on what they see on TV or in magazines. It's not about being beautiful on the outside, it's about loving yourself and who you are.

It's encouraging to see a young star reach out with a positive message. Keep it coming!

A Little Bit Country a Lot Glam on the CMA Red Carpet

It was jeans for some (Kid Rock, of course) and gowns for others at last night's 41st Annual Country Music Awards in Nashville, Tennessee. Nicole Kidman definitely brought the most bang to the red carpet in her bold dress - sure it looks a little like one of those cheesy college dorm felt-y posters, but it's not like she can't pull it off. Carrie Underwood looked typically great while fellow former Idol-er Kellie Picker looked surprisingly demure for her. I must admit that Kate Walsh looked pretty smokin', finding a way to be on our ABC Wednesday night even when Private Practice was preempted for these awards. "American Idol" Elimination: See Ya, Sanjaya!

Y'all, what are we going to talk about now?

Sanjaya - he of the ponyhawk, the creepy smile and the possible deal with the devil - ended his "American Idol" reign of terror on Wednesday after giving one of the only truly boring performances of his "Idol" career. No, I'm not kidding. That sound you heard was America gasping, then cheering. His tears at the end were oddly reassuring; I think he really did want to win and wasn't just treating the whole thing as a joke. He also gets points for changing the chorus of his farewell song to: "Let's give 'em something to talk about - other than hair."

Now I suppose the biggest question is which contestant Vote for the Worst will pick next.

Joining Sanjaya in the bottom three were LaKisha and Blake, each I believe making their first appearance there. I'm not too worried about Blake yet; he has devoted fans, and I believe they'll turn out even more in force next week. But I do sense the tide turning against LaKisha somewhat - especially since Jordin stepped it up - and she's certainly not a lock for the final anymore. For the rest of my thoughts on the show - including a possible resolution to EyeRollGate -

Seacrest asked Simon to explain his side of EyeRollGate, and he repeated basically what the producers said earlier Wednesday: "I may not be the nicest person in the world but I would never, ever, ever disrespect those families or those victims." They also played back a cut of the judges' table that showed Simon indeed talking to Paula about the "nasally" comment all through Chris' Virgina Tech shoutout. Here's my feeling: 1) I do believe Chris was sincere in what he said, 2) I think it looked bad because he said it only after getting slammed by the judges and sniping at Simon, and 3) no matter how mean Simon has been, I truly don't think he would roll his eyes at a tragic shooting.
Seacrest's intro was almost exactly the same as last week, complete with pregnant pause and meaningful glance at Sanjaya.
What, exactly, was that thing on Randy's head?
The "Idol" challenge hit a new low tonight: The question was about this season's finalists, and one who got voted off just a couple of weeks ago at that.
In one of the better segments of the hour-long results show, Seacrest asked the Idols what they listened to this week. If you were wondering, Melinda's been "getting my Jesus on," while Sanjaya listened to country, Blake to Incubus, Jordin to Fergie, Chris to Jason Mraz (and, at least a little jokingly, Herman's Hermits), Phil to Willie Nelson, and LaKisha to Yolanda Adams.
My boyfriend, upon Fergie taking the stage: "She's gonna wet her pants!" Also, that girl who got called on stage during her performance apparently forgot to take her dose of Ashley Ferl Crying Powder; she just looked stoic.
The Pimpomercial was heist-themed and set to "I Ran" with some cool black-and-white special effects. Meanwhile, the group sing might have actually been one of my favorite group sings ever; I'm aware that this kills my street cred, but I'd download it.
For the elimination, Seacrest did the divide-into-two-groups trick, with Sanjaya, LaKisha and Blake on one side and Chris, Phil and Jordin on the other. Melinda was the "lucky" one to get to choose between the two, and she elected to just sit down in the middle of the stage - totally appropriate for her.
Anyone catch Seacrest saying after his chat with Antonio Banderas that they were short on time? Yeah, that two-minute-results-show-with-58-minutes-of-padding totally isn't long enough.
Martina McBride's performance of "Anyway" was simple and straightforward, quite a contrast to J. Lo's flashy outing. Her little girl appeared on stage with her and told Seacrest he thought all the singers were good, to which Seacrest responded: "Thanks, Paula."
Ratings be damned: 38 million votes were cast this week, the highest ever for a Top 7 week.
Next week: A little thing we like to call Idol Gives Back. Apparently, two superstars will be singing an improbable duet together. Who's it going to be?

"American Idol": Not Much Twang in Country Night

Country night is typically one of my least-favorite "American Idol" theme nights. It's not that I don't like country music - I just don't like bad country music, and amateur singers butchering the songs by attempting maximum twang certainly qualifies as bad country.

At the same time, it's always been a little awesome to watch, just because the potential for disaster is so high. So I couldn't help but be disappointed by Tuesday night's mostly boring performances. Nobody came out in a 10-gallon hat. Nobody tried Shania Twain. And the singers who wouldn't be good at singing country got around the rule by singing the least-country arrangements they could find.

Martina McBride - who amazed me with her ability to look both 25 and 55 over the course of that opening montage - proved herself an intelligent mentor, but the show itself was a little odd, with several awkward mentions of the tragedy at Virgina Tech. I suppose if there's any time for overwrought emotions, it's country night, though. And reality TV must soldier on. Don't forget to vote on the singer you think is heading home, and to see what I thought of the performances,

Phil Stacey (at left): I did not have Phil pegged as a country singer - in fact, I increasingly wasn't pegging him as a singer at all - but he sounded awesome on "Where the Blacktop Ends." He also took Martina's advice and loosened up, showing more personality in this one performance than in all his other final-round outings put together. The judges were fans, but I don't know how they formed their opinions, given that Paula and Simon were apparently playing "who's got your nose?" while he sang. Seriously, anyone else see that?

Jordin Sparks: I was worried Jordin was becoming forgettable: Before Tuesday's show, I was trying to name the Idols off the top of my head, and her name was the last I remembered. I have a feeling her "Broken Wing" performance will change that. She sounded so awesome, she even made herself cry. She was also wearing what appeared to be a duct-tape dress, but I'll let that go under the circumstances. Simon said he can see Jordin winning "Idol."

Sanjaya Malakar: I had my fingers crossed for a cowboy hat and chaps, but I just got a red bandanna. He sang "Something to Talk About," and it was weird, because maybe for the first time, he didn't really give us much to talk about. No weird hair, no faux-Sinatra, no bilingual choruses - just lots of dull, bad singing. Maybe his lack of freakiness will finally spell the end for him? Hey, a girl can hope.

LaKisha Jones (at right): I am way biased here, because I hate "Jesus Take the Wheel" with a deep and all-consuming passion, but I seriously despised this performance. I will limit my "Jesus should have taken the wheel there" jokes to one and just say that I think she lost the song completely on the chorus. It didn't help that the styling department let her down bigtime (bad hair! big gold boots!). The judges were harsh, but I think accurately so.

Chris Richardson: Martina McBride called Chris "versatile," which made me question her taste severely, because I didn't realize "versatile" meant "everything sounds the same." Timberfake is bringing monotone back. Usually he can perform his way out of a bad song, but he seemed totally bored on Tuesday. Minus five points for sniping back to Simon that "nasally is a form of singing - I don't know if you knew that." Minus a million points for mentioning Virgina Tech - no matter how honest a sentiment, it comes off like a dig for votes.

Melinda Doolittle (at left): I'm against fake hair generally, but extensions were a good choice for her - she looks at least five years younger, and her neck issue (shall we say, neckless issue?) is less apparent. Her "Trouble is a Woman" sounded more soul than country, but that's such a blurry line anyway, and when Simon compares you to Tina Turner, you must be doing something right. This week I finally started believing that she'd be a great "Idol" winner - and I loved Simon telling her to ditch the humility.

Blake Lewis: He covered a Tim McGraw song, but it wasn't very country-sounding. Not that that's a bad thing, necessarily. The trouble is that it sounded a lot like his Keane song from earlier in the competition, and like a lot of his other performances, and I'm getting worried that we're losing what made him Blake to begin with. Meanwhile, Simon picked Blake's critique to give his own Virgina Tech shoutout, which was just awkward.

Who's safe: Jordin and Melinda. After that, anything's possible, though - and I never thought I'd say this - I hope Phil makes it through this time.

Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood Join Nicole and Keith For the ACM Awards

The annual Academy of Country Music Awards went down in Las Vegas last night with Blake Shelton serving as host. Lovely ladies like Nicole Kidman, Carrie Underwood, LeAnn Rimes, and Taylor Swift posed on the ACM Awards red carpet and then headed inside so the statues could be distributed to winners. It was an unconventional show - a couple even got married at one point in a ceremony officiated by Martina McBride! The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth was also called in to host the ACM Fan Jam. Big honors went to record of the year and female vocalist of the year winner Miranda Lambert, and her husband Blake got the corresponding male honor. Taylor Swift was crowned entertainer of the year in a hotly contested category. Blake even poked a little fun at Taylor's well-used surprised face when handing over the statue. The fun went down in front of a star-studded crowd that included Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, and even Ashton Kutcher.
