Supermodels Bar, Naomi, and Doutzen Unite For Jodie and Mel's Beaver

Bar Refaeli stepped out in a Roberto Cavalli gown alongside her fellow supermodel Naomi Campbell at today's Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Beaver. Bar's not letting her recent split from Leonardo DiCaprio put a damper on her fun, as she also stepped out for last night's Chopard party. Leo, meanwhile, has been spotted cozying up to Blake Lively aboard Steven Spielberg's yacht. New mom and Victoria's Secret Angel Doutzen Kroes left her baby boy, Phyllon, at home to walk the red carpet on the arm of her husband, Sunnery James. The stars of the film, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, arrived hand in hand for the debut of their controversial dark comedy. Mel Gibson started his day shirtless during a smoke break outside his hotel room but suited up for his return to the red carpet. Jodie has been handling most of the movie's promotional duties by herself so far, but it seems she and Mel are teaming up for one last publicity push before the flick's Friday release.

Mel Gibson was shirtless this morning to have a cigarette outside his hotel room in Cannes. He's in France to promote his Jodie Foster-directed film The Beaver and threw on a shirt for this evening's premiere. Promoting the movie was a slight problem for Jodie in the wake of Mel's well-publicized domestic problems over the last year. She decided to debut it at SXSW without Mel, but it seems she and the studio wanted him involved with press before it opens in the US on May 20. She was still solo, though, for a photo op this morning.

Is there anything more heartwarming than a man and his beaver? I know what you're thinking, but just play along with me for a moment. In The Beaver, Mel Gibson plays Walter Black, a man who's failing in his family life and career. When his wife (Jodie Foster, who also directs) kicks him out of his house, the depressed Walter turns to an unexpected solution: a beaver hand puppet that "talks" for him.

In the trailer, Walter uses the puppet as a means of therapy, a tool to put "a psychological distance between himself and the negative aspects of his personality." While that sounds quite highbrow, there's no getting around the fact that this is a movie in which a man uses a puppet with a British accent to reconnect with his family. Considering that Gibson's reputation has lost him many fans (and recently, a cameo role in The Hangover 2), I can't imagine that this will be the movie to get audiences back in his good graces. Edge of Darkness: Edge-of-Your-Seat Entertainment

Full disclosure: I went into Edge of Darkness with some trepidation. Mel Gibson hasn't exactly ranked in the public's high esteem in recent years, and the film looked like your run-of-the-mill thriller - which, in many respects, it is. But I didn't expect to become so enthralled.

Based on the BBC miniseries of the same name, the movie centers around Thomas Craven (Gibson), a Boston detective and single dad whose one treasure in life is his daughter Emma. When Emma returns home for a visit, he pries just like any father would. Her boyfriend? She's keeping mum. Her scientific research job? That's classified. Thomas tries to connect with Emma, but he never gets the chance. Hours later as they're leaving his house, she's tragically shot down on the front doorstep by an unknown gunman.

Don't worry, I'm not giving away any spoilers here, because it's what happens after that delivers the most suspense. Just

Thomas takes on his daughter's homicide case, digging up whatever info he can from her cell phone history to personal items stashed in her room. But as he gets deeper, he lands in the middle of a political cover-up scheme between a privately-owned nuclear facility, an environmental militant group, and the United States government. To put it simply: heads start rolling, and our man Thomas is seemingly the only honest hero in the mix.

Gibson nicely balances the duality needed for the role: his tender fatherly side is shown in a series of flashbacks, but as he's chased by men in unmarked cars, he's ruthless. Mad Max may be older, but he's still sharp (even with a Boston accent).

The film itself does have its shortcomings, often using motifs like snobby politicians, hit men with greasy hair, and an over-the-top bloodbath in the final act. Even some dialogue feels like standard "bad guy" lines (e.g., "Everything is against the law in Massachusetts," while sure to be an audience favorite, was hit on the head one time too many).

Even so, the film is still, at its core, a satisfying thrill ride. While I had the plot mostly figured out halfway through, it still kept my attention all the way to the end credits.

Watch out for Gibson - he might have just found the first stepping stone towards the public's good graces.
