Streep, Bullock, Winfrey Join Forces For Michael Patrick King

Director Michael Patrick King has spent the past few years working on the Sex and the City movies, but he's managed to pull together an even more unstoppable female cast for his next film. He'll write and direct a comedy starring Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, and Oprah Winfrey that takes us inside the wide world of a home shopping network. The best part is that King will tailor the script to each of the women. He said,

I came up with the idea of writing for Meryl, Sandy and Oprah, and it became so specific to them that I wanted to be sure I had interest from these ladies. I put it in front of each of them and they all said yes. To have access to these women, tell them this story and hear yes was almost like a Greek mythological journey, with me going from one goddess to the next. It was humbling. They're all unique, and the idea of writing parts that three strong women will play is such a challenge. Their body of work is beyond reproach. It's also appealing to craft a character for Oprah to come back and play that's not Oprah.

This news has me psyched for a few reasons. First: the cast is obviously unbeatable. Secondly, if you've seen the most recent season of Big Love, then you know that home shopping is actually kind of an untapped resource for hilarious hijinks. Third, Oprah being funny? Where do I sign?

The Sex and the City Girls Have a Fabulous Wardrobe Change For Their London Afterparty!

The famous foursome of Sex and the City 2 traded in their red carpet gowns for another set of dresses to attend last night's premiere afterparty at Odeon. Sarah Jessica Parker also took a rest from supporting her dramatic Philip Treacy headpiece that had everyone talking. Her gorgeous blue Halston for the post-screening bash was a beautiful splash of color while Kristin Davis, Kim Cattrall, and Cynthia Nixon all changed into something shorter - who is your best dressed this time? Chris Noth stuck to his dapper Mr. Big style throughout the soiree. Emma Roberts stayed out late and also has her own movie news to celebrate - she's signed on to be the lead in Scream 4! The SATC2 fashion on the big screen and in all the promotional outfits has been a blast to see and we're also looking back at where it all began with their HBO show while Fab has rounded up 15 ways to prepare for your girls' night out with Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte!

SJP and Her SATC Ladies Talk Tummy Issues and Camel Rides!

Sarah Jessica Parker and her Sex and the City 2 costars had a busy weekend of press, starting on Friday when she was decked out in Proenza Schouler for a carriage ride in Central Park with Billy Bush. Saturday afternoon was more casual, though, and SJP was spotted in pants on her way out of a hotel with Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis. The trio joined Cynthia Nixon, Chris Noth and their director Michael Patrick King yesterday for a press conference held appropriately in the shoe department of Bergdorf Goodman. Amid racks filled with Manolos, Louboutins, and more, they opened up about their film and the fun times they had working together once again. Here are highlights:

SJP on the issues facing Carrie this time: "There was a wedding, and now there's a marriage - and the two are very different. I think Carrie finds herself starting to ask questions about the environment in which she currently lives. And the big theme of the movie for all of us is tradition - why do we run toward it and why do we push it away . . . how do we redefine tradition for ourselves?"
SJP on filming in Morocco: "It was one of the great experiences of my professional life to live and work with this cast and crew every single place, to see the sun rise and set in the most far-flung places, to lie in a bed all day with these women exhausted and laughing - to be on a camel with Kim Cattrall . . . [Kim says, "Not many people can say they've done that!"] It was indescribably wonderful."
Kristin after SJP outed her for a gastrointestinal problem in Morocco: "I still have to deal with the first movie on a daily basis! So give me a break now everybody!"
Michael Patrick King on filming in NYC: "We had NYC, which was here in Bergdorfs, with thousands and thousands of people watching and supporting. It was like an interactive theater piece. The girls go to talk, everybody shuts up, I say action, lines, cut, applause! I call that the celebrity petting zoo. Every now and then someone breaks through and we have to stop and get everyone back behind the barricade."

Kim on what she loves about the series: "The most powerful thing for me is that we've encouraged a lot of women to change the way they feel about being single, having cancer, all the story lines about getting married and then being deserted, being alone, then being lonely - I think we've addressed them and encouraged them to come together, and I think that's a very powerful thing."
SJP on what she thinks the series has meant to fans: "I tend not to ponder too much on what we may or may not have done because I like hearing from other people what they think. But I will say there seems to be this beacon we're moving towards where women are really unkind to each other and call each other all sorts of horrible names, and there's a vernacular that our ears have adapted to, which I find really objectionable. I really really love how these women [of Sex and the City] love each other."
Kristin's favorite memory: "We were together and we got two Thanksgivings! We worked on the actual day because in Morocco they obviously don't celebrate Thanksgiving. On the day itself, our fantastic English caterers made this American Thanksgiving for us which they thought just the Americans would want to eat but then everybody wanted to eat it and we ran out of apple pie and pumpkin pie! And then Cynthia and Sarah's sons came to visit for the weekend so we decided we'd have another Thanksgiving at our hotel! They did a fantastic job and we had snake charmers come for the boys because we were in Morocco."

SJP Has a Girly Weekend With Her Twins and Costars

Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon spent their Friday hard at work on Sex and the City 2 in NYC. Lucky for SJP, production on the film is taking place near her West Village home - making her commute pretty easy as a working mom. Her daughters Marion and Tabitha even made an appearance on Sunday, as the Summer headline babies took a walk with their nanny around the neighborhood.

SJP was back in a few old wardrobe favorites as she filmed, including the newsprint dress she wore during the show's run on HBO. When she wasn't alongside Cynthia, Sarah Jessica was joined on set by Chris Noth. Director Michael Patrick King and stylist Patricia Field were also on set, as the whole SATC gang gets back together.

Box Office: SATC Sticks a Stiletto in the Competition

As the saying goes: If you build it, they will come. Which was indeed the case this weekend for Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King's two and a half hour fête gifted to devoted fans who showed up in droves to support Sex and the City's move to the big screen.

The movie smashed every record for an R-rated comedy and proved that women can drive box office sales just like men. SATC earned an estimated $55.7 million prompting Warner president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman to quote in Variety:

This has become a cultural phenomenon. What this shows is that given the right project, you can create a frenzy for the female aud, just like we are used to with boys and men.

The film was "the strongest ever for a movie carried by a female lead," beating the record-holder Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Sarah Jessica Parker told the New York Times, "I am so excited about the possibilities for movies about women.”

Dropping to the No. 2 spot, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull still had a strong second weekend earning an additional $46 million. Even the third spot was a shock to many with the seriously spooky The Strangers taking in an estimated $20.7 million. That's really good if you compare it to the approximate $9 million the movie cost to produce. Iron Man dropped to the fourth spot followed by The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian at No. 5.

Sex and the City: Sugary Sweet With a Sad Center

Despite the fact that I've never owned shoes in the $500+ range and have never been a single and fabulous 30-something (or 40-something) New Yorker, I related to and loved the characters on Sex and the City. Every week I could count on seeing four women who placed a high value on their female friendships rather than tearing each other down (ahem, The Hills), who fought bravely against those who would look down on them for being unmarried, and who talked candidly about not just sex, but everything. Amidst hardship, lapses in judgment, and insecurities, they were smart ladies who had the understanding that life - even for the truly sophisticated - is no fairytale.

Some of these cherished characteristics translated well to the big screen version and I'm so thankful for that. But I'm also a bit mystified by how far it strays at times from the very aspects I loved so much. I wish I could say that it's a witty and modern take on the meaning of love and friendship for middle-aged women (and women approaching middle-age). Instead, the film is at times a fun fantasy, but it's not the Sex and the City I remember.

To see what I totally enjoyed about seeing these women back together and what struck a false note,

The first third of the film has a lot of the good stuff from the series: it's irreverent, funny, absurd, intelligent, and full of sharp insights into marriage and being single in your 40s, all the while poking fun at its own universe. Then, slowly but surely, the movie veers into some strange territory and the women start taking themselves and their designer bags way too seriously, and everyone loses a normal dose of perspective.

Bravo to the writers for taking a risk with some genuinely dark moments (a necessity for a feature-length film, and this one is lengthy at over two hours) but even so (without giving away too many details, I promise you), nothing is so bad that any character should ever seriously utter the line, "Will I ever laugh again?" Even Miranda, who could always be counted on for some snappy, cynical retorts that zap her friends back to reality is morosely silent for most of the film. I really liked how strong Miranda was in the series, and in the movie it's like she isn't given enough words. It's so disappointing.

That said, you will probably laugh at some hilarious moments, and you might even cry. Your heart will likely race with the excitement of seeing all of these characters together again and will revel in the exhilarating fact that they're here, living their lives as if they'd never left us. But there are many moments where everything just feels forced and lackluster. Of course there's an emphasis on couture and living the high life in New York, which is sometimes glamorous but mostly just rings empty. We're not all "looking for labels and love," actually. We want to laugh, we want these ladies to give at least some kind of voice to our modern hopes and fears and we definitely do not want to be pandered to.

My bottom line: For each moment of applause and laughter at my screening, there was an equal amount of groaning and eye-rolling. It succeeds in that it's not a disaster and I'm glad I saw it. It fails in that it isn't really a movie, it's a season of SATC smooshed together, and compared to the other seasons, well, they've done a lot better.

After the Sex and the City Premiere, It's the After-Party

The gorgeous women of Sex and the City followed their pink carpet premiere with a star-studded after-party at NYC's MoMa last night. The fab foursome continued to pose together (do you think SJP looked better than LL in that Nina Ricci dress?) as Mario Cantone had fun with some sailors and Jennifer Hudson showed off her second dress of the evening. Even though the night was mostly about the ladies, SJP was accompanied by her proud husband Matthew Broderick, while Candace Bushnell and Anna Wintour brought their men, Charles Askegaard and Shelby Bryan. In true SATC style, the fun times rolled into an after-after-party at The Carlyle hotel. The ladies may have grown up, but they obviously still know how to have a great time.

The Girls Bring Their Sex to Berlin

The fabulous foursome from Sex and the City hit Berlin today in yet another set of gorgeous gowns. Between all these premieres, I can't even imagine all the amazing dresses we'll be seeing. Only a few weeks left before our beloved SATC hits NYC and the rest of the world, but there are magazine covers galore between now and then. From testing your skills on all the geeky gadgets throughout the seasons to Fab chatting with new addition Jennifer Hudson, there are weeks of fun anticipation left between now and the theater. Here are highlights from the EW cover story:

On where the movie starts: "It can't be just about wanton lust - that's not the truth about these women anymore," she explains. "The top of the movie is like a dollop of cream - delicious imagery and scant narrative. It just tells you what we've been doing, and then: boom. It's a recovery operation. The movie goes to a very dark place that we've never done before."
On what it means to her: "There's a lot at stake for me personally," says Parker. "I want it to do well, but the bigger story for me here is that I want the people who hold the purse strings to believe that there are female audiences, that it's worth their money."

We have a feeling nearly every woman - and many men! - we know will be shelling out cash for more than one trip to the theater. Speaking of which, don't forget to enter to win a trip out to SF for a special prescreening of the movie with all the Sugar Girls!

"Sex and the City" Movie Gets the Green Light

After plenty of hedging and hinting, we now have an official report that the makers of HBO's hit series "Sex and the City" will make a feature-length movie based on the show. Production is scheduled to begin in the fall. The article continues:

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon are all set to reprise their roles, with longtime exec producer Michael Patrick King directing a script he wrote.

The film got close to happening about two years ago, but progress halted when Cattrall backed away. She wanted script controls and a salary close to that of Parker, who was more highly paid than the others because she was co-executive producer of the series. Whatever tensions existed are gone now, sources said. Cattrall has a deal she’s happy with, one the sources said gives her input on her scenes, a fat salary and a future series deal with HBO.

No news yet on whether other actors from the show (ahem, Chris Noth) will be back for the movie, but I'll keep you posted. Here's hoping the movie version comes out well and doesn't taint the fond memories I have of the original series!

Carrie and Miranda Replace Samantha With New Foul-Mouthed Female

SJP and Cynthia Nixon teamed up to go see Bridget Everett's bawdy one woman show, At Least It's Pink. The show was partly written by Michael Patrick King who headed Sex and the City. The show is evidently so racy it's not even quotable! Sounds like an episode of Sex and the City. No wonder the girls look like they're having so much fun!
