Gisele Bundchen, Matthew McConaughey, and More Honor Morgan Freeman

Gisele Bundchen wore Oscar de la Renta on the red carpet at the AFI Life Achievement Award honoring Morgan Freeman held last night at LA's Sony Pictures Studios. The supermodel said hello to the man himself, hugging Morgan and the Brazilian TV presenter Hebe Camargo. Gisele also caught up with Morgan's daughter Alexia before moving inside to mingle with other celeb guests like Clint Eastwood, Matthew Broderick, Matthew McConaughey, Casey Affleck, Betty White, and Helen Mirren. Morgan's Amistad costar Matthew McConaughey rocked a new look with his handlebar mustache, though his girlfriend, Camila Alves, didn't seem to mind the new facial fuzz. Morgan said a few words about his career and humbly acknowledged one special role in Bruce Almighty. Morgan Freeman said of his AFI honor, "I should be ashamed to say that sooner or later, I knew that someone was going to call on me to play God. I just had to be sure that when I said OK, that it was a comedy."

Seeing Helen Mirren wield heavy artillery while she talks blithely about baking is one of the best things you'll see all day. She, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, and John Malkovich star in RED as retired CIA agents who can't fight the urge to keep kicking butt and taking names.

It's not just Mirren that's funny either; Malkovich plays hilariously paranoid in his postcareer life, while Freeman makes the most of ~~leering~~ living in a retirement home. With Mary Louise-Parker and Richard Dreyfuss also showing their bright, shiny faces, RED has managed to totally capture my attention and look pretty dang fun.

So, the last time I was home my mom was telling me about the MTV series Teen Mom and how she was addicted. She had a justification, too: she figured it was good because Morgan Freeman produced it, and did I know that? I didn't, and I was very impressed.

After watching an entire soul-sucking hour, the credits rolled and I did indeed see Morgan Freeman's name: Morgan J. Freeman. Wah wah.

Matt Damon Still Has Some Invictus Work to Do

Matt Damon and his wife Luciana headed to London over the weekend after a stay in LA for the SAG Awards. They were casual for a dinner at Nobu on Friday night, but tonight they were decked out to hit the red carpet at the UK premiere of Invictus. Joining the Damons were Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and the former South African rugby captain Francois Pienaar, who Matt plays in the film. Matt's portrayal won him a Golden Globe nomination, and we'll know Tuesday if it'll get him in the running for an Oscar.

Palm Springs Film Festival Brings Out Big Award Show Names!

Anna Kendrick, Mariah Carey and Marion Cotillard may become especially familiar faces this award season thanks to their acclaimed films, and the three lovely ladies were among the red carpet attendees at last night's Palm Springs International Film Festival gala. Anna joked on the red carpet about learning how not to fuss with herself when she's all done up, saying, "I'm trying to get used to the dresses and the heels and trying not to play with my hair when it's been so perfectly coiffed." Meanwhile, Mariah just gushed about how lucky she is to have landed a part in the movie since the book on which Precious is based means so much to her.

The gala kicked off the festival that runs until Jan. 17, which is the night of the Golden Globes and right before Sundance. Anna took the stage during the evening and also landed a new part - she'll join Seth Rogen and James McAvoy for the buzzed-about upcoming cancer comedy. The esteemed Quentin Tarantino, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood also attended last night's events as they brush off their tux collections for a busy few months. Sean Penn, who was all over the circuit last year for Milk, just resigned onto the Three Stooges movie. Overall, the night was a success and set the mood for all the shows, including tonight's People's Choice Awards!

Invictus: Inspirational but Not Groundbreaking

Clint Eastwood's Invictus may appeal to some as a historical story about Nelson Mandela; others will see it as another sports movie about a rugby team. Whatever the reason for heading to the theater, the film has the unique ability to take the audience on a journey that will leave you cheering when it's all over - even if the story seems familiar.

Invictus takes us to South Africa in 1994, the year that Nelson Mandela took the presidency after spending 27 years in prison. Faced with the mountainous task of uniting a nation post-apartheid, Mandela turns to rugby captain Francois Pinnear (Matt Damon) to give the divided masses a cause they can all rally behind.

That's just the tip of the iceberg though, so

The aftermath of apartheid is visible at every turn, but Mandela is determined to unite his people - even when his family, followers, and advisers disagree with his methods. Separated from his wife and family, Mandela has only his presidency to think about and works tirelessly in spite of exhaustion and fatigue (the man was in his 70s, after all).

Meanwhile, Pinnear is having leadership obstacles of his own: his team, the Springboks, aren't performing on the field and are hated by most of their home country. Seen as a symbol of apartheid, the black citizens choose to throw their support toward any team that isn't their own. With the Rugby World Cup looming on the horizon, Mandela invites Pinnear to tea, taking the first step towards bringing his country closer together.

Throughout the film, we watch as the line between black and white slowly begins to blur on many levels; from Mandela's personal security team to Pinnear's family to, finally, a stadium filled with roaring fans.

Freeman and Damon are both top-notch in their roles, taking on accents and slipping into their parts effortlessly. Playing Mandela requires a bit more, and Freeman delivers a quiet yet engaging performance as the pensive president with a sly sense of humor.

Though the film seems perfect on paper, Eastwood's storytelling lacks the emotional depth I've grown to expect and appreciate from his films. We just barely scratch the surface of Mandela's fascinating life and what makes him tick, and I would have liked to see his character explored more deeply. The same can be said for the level of segregation that exists at the beginning of the film. Yes, there are scenes that portray how adamantly opposed the black people are to supporting the Springboks, but the big Hollywood ending almost feels too easy and all tied up with a big red bow. This is a true story, one that's rich in history and inspiration, so why does it feel like something we've seen a hundred times before? It certainly packs the right issues and elements to make you think and feel, but it just falls short of fully engaging the audience in the story. For a director of Eastwood's caliber, that's a disappointment.

At over 130 minutes the film is certainly not short, but somehow it feels like key moments are left out to usher us into the Sprinbok's winner's circle. The good news is that even if you drift off in the middle, the big payoff at the end still tastes just as sweet.

Maddox Joins the Adults Brad, Angelina, Matt, Clint For Invictus

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie weren't the only special guests at last night's Invictus premiere in LA - they brought their oldest son Maddox to pose and mingle on the red carpet. The eight-year-old was decked out in a fedora just like his dad often wears, though lately Brad's all about the beanie which he wore for date night with Angelina earlier in the week.

The movie's stars Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman, as well as director Clint Eastwood, were all fresh off Wednesday night's NYC screening. Between publicity stops with Luciana on his arm always, Matt's still busy filming The Adjustment Bureau in NYC. Invictus is getting Oscar buzz already which hopefully means a lot more of these handsome faces during award season.
