Nelson Mandela Celebrates with 46,664 of His Best Friends

London's Hyde Park turned into a party scene this afternoon as Nelson Mandela kept on celebrating his ninetieth birthday with a star-studded concert. Will and Jada were up and at 'em after last night's Elton John party to get on stage, while Geri Halliwell and Prince William's girlfriend, Kate Middleton, surveyed the scene. Amy Winehouse, who was looking unusually tan, managed to take the stage despite her recent health problems. A crowd of 46,664, a number chosen as that was Nelson's prison number during his 27-year incarceration in South Africa, turned out to mark the occasion. Between this big show and dinner with his friends on Wednesday evening, hopefully Mr. Mandela had a perfect and memorable birthday.

Nelson Mandela Throws a Party 90 Years in the Making

It was a 90th birthday party to remember for Nelson Mandela, who went big for his star-studded celebration in London's Hyde Park yesterday. Will Smith managed to tear himself away from his non-stop promotional tour of Hancock to catch up with his buddies Robert de Niro, Forest Whitaker and Denzel Washington, and of course to spend some time with Jada. There was no sign of Amy Winehouse, but Naomi Campbell was happy to provide the drama, showing up even though Nelson personally requested she be removed from the guest list after her recent legal issues.

Was Madonna Snubbed by Nelson Mandela?

Madonna and David continued their tour of Malawi this week by visiting a day care center in Masekese. She seems to be enjoying herself but evidently her whole trip isn't going exactly as planned. She had been planning to meet with Nelson Mandela but he refused her invitation and she's said to be "devastated." After seeing her here that's obviously a bit of an exaggeration. Her rep denies the whole thing saying Madonna "never planned to meet him. She'd be honored, I'm sure. But she's focusing on Malawi. South Africa is Oprah's territory." We're sure Madonna is just happy enough helping out where she can.

Matt Damon Would Like Your Good Will Hunting Reviews Now

Matt Damon was showing off his legs and very blonde hair, we're still getting used to, on the set of The Human Factor in South Africa over the weekend. This might not be his dreamiest look, but the film has the kind of subject matter - Nelson Mandela's life - that could land him at next year's Oscars. He won his statue in 1997 though Damon thinks that we should let films prove their place in history before giving them awards. He spoke to Parade:

On the Oscars: I think that the best way to judge movies is, like, 10 years after they're released. I think they should actually do the awards that way. I think they should have done the Academy Awards this year for movies from 1998. I think it's better to look at a movie and then step back and look at it again. I don't think - that the awards necessarily get it right. I think they get it wrong more often than they get it right.
On playing Bourne again: We're working on it. This time it would be from an original script rather than a book by Robert Ludlum. But the director, Paul Greengrass, is busy and I am too, so we'll see what happens. . . . Listen, when I did the first movie, I was 29 years old. I am 37 now, and after a tough fighting scene, the next day you wake up and feel your body more. That's just the way it is.
On how he's changed: I'm probably a lot more boring than I used to be and more tired at night. You can't fake it. It's like when it's bedtime, it's bedtime. I go to bed earlier and I get up earlier. I think being a parent changes everything about you in really little ways and in ways that you don't really understand unless you have kids. It's kind of like describing a guitar chord -- it's not really a simple thing to do.

Considering he's hard at work in South Africa at the moment and was in Morocco just a few months ago, his life is far from boring.

South Africa Won't Be Ignored on Matt Damon's Watch

Yesterday, Matt Damon visited Musina, a South African border town where Zimbabwe refugees have fled, in order to continue his work on behalf of Not on Our Watch. A dyed blond Matt is in South Africa filming a movie with Morgan Freeman about Nelson Mandela called The Human Factor. Matt spoke to victims of border atrocities, including many women, and he said the Musina situation is "untenable," that he was "shocked and saddened," and "action has to be taken." Matt started the Not on Our Watch organization with Brad Pitt and George Clooney, as they all continue to use their celebrity to raise awareness for various humanitarian efforts around the world.
