Paris Lands The Cover of Newsweek, Perhaps it's a Desperate Attempt to Increase Newsstand Sales

While Paris may be really trying hard with this serious actor thing, she has still managed to bump and grind her way onto the cover of Newsweek. However, the article isn't commending her film work. The magazine's cover story, which accompanies a cover shot of Paris and Britney with the title Girls Gone Wild, poses the question of whether girls like Paris, Britney, and LL are poisoning our nation's youth and turning our 12-year olds into prosti-tots. Ultimately, the writers can't seem to answer their own question, but Paris is probably just psyched that she made the cover of Newsweek.

Michelle Opens Up About Heath

Michelle Williams has slowly been stepping back into the spotlight in the past few months, promoting her latest movies Synecdoche, New York and Wendy and Lucy, and she recently talked to Newsweek to help promote her films. The interview is both raw and sincere, with Michelle talking about living under a microscope and how she's handling Heath Ledger's tragic passing. Here's more:

On having her personal life so exposed: "It's such a funny line to walk as an actor," Williams says. "There's some great quote I think Dustin Hoffman gave when he was doing 'The Graduate': 'The more you know about me, the harder my job is'."
On Dawson's Creek: "When I was on 'Dawson's Creek,' I wanted to make work that meant something to people, serious work that made people less alone in the world. And I was thinking about that this morning in the shower-'Dawson's Creek' meant something to people."
On how she's handling Heath's death: "It's so sad. I guess it's always changing. What else can I say? I just wake up each day in a slightly different place-grief is like a moving river, so that's what I mean by 'it's always changing'. It's a strange thing to say because I'm at heart an optimistic person, but I would say in some ways it just gets worse. It's just that the more time that passes, the more you miss someone. In some ways it gets worse. That's what I would say."

The interview must have been a difficult one for Michelle, but the strength and wisdom she's shown over the past year really shine through. Having Matilda and Spike Jonze in her life are hopefully helping Michelle find happiness in both her personal life and her career.

Is It Lame When Celebs Claim They Can't Use a Computer?

As part of Newsweek's annual roundtable discussion, celebs were asked if they Google themselves on a regular basis. Robert Downey Jr. proudly admitted that he reads up on himself, while Brad Pitt claimed the opposite, saying, "Never. First of all, I don't really know how to operate a computer." He's not the first star to have trouble with technology - Angelina once claimed she doesn't know how to turn on a computer, and Jennifer Aniston is supposedly computer illiterate. It's hard to believe so many celebs are behind the times, so tell us - do you think it's lame when stars say they can't use computers?

RDJ Googles Himself and Loves Making Blockbusters

Robert Downey Jr. and Guy Ritchie looked very chummy on the set of Sherlock Holmes in Brooklyn yesterday. It was a big day for RDJ getting an Oscar nomination for Tropic Thunder about which he said, "It just shows you how far everyone in entertainment and politics has come." Robert also recently sat down with some fellow nominees for Newsweek's annual roundtable discussion. RDJ was his usual charming self:

On googling himself: Oh, I love all that s--, personally. Sorry. I love just it. Because it's a hoot. Some people overstate their support, like they know you. Other people are busy doing something else and just want to go on this chat site and say some despicable character assassination, which I honestly think they kind of nailed it. I do have that shortcoming. It's really fun.
On his career recently: I grew up in a filmmaking family, and my dad was doing maverick underground independent stuff at the time of Cassavetes, so the Mike Leigh approach was nothing new to me. If your movie made money, you were eyed suspiciously by your peers. But then the counterpoint to that, it became so about the art, things got further and further out, there was no containment for it. That to me was the first death of independent moviemaking. I'll be on the sets, we're shooting "Iron Man" and we're in the desert, and I looked up and there's a sandstorm, and I just had the ah-ha moment. Gratitude would be the wrong word. But being able to do this is kind of inexplicable. It's the sense that I'm at my purpose. I'm not very popular about this, and the misses tells me to keep it on the QT, but lately for me, the biggest most commercial generic projects that I've done are the most creatively satisfying, and the ones that the audiences respond to. And I jump off and do an indie, and they can't hit their ass with both hands, it's 50 monkeys f---ing a football, and then you have to go and pump your kidneys dry in Sundance. What's next, f---king Shakespeare in the park for the pagans for three months?

Yesterday Robert also mentioned how glad he is to see comedies getting recognized by the Academy, which is something we're also excited about.

Britney's Looking Beat

Britney is still in NYC, but we have yet to see her resurface at any more fashion week events. Instead she is stocking up on smokes and snacks from her favorite corner drug store. From what I hear, it's freezing on the east coast but apparently that hasn't stopped Britney from baring her famous midriff. Unfortunately seeing her smoking is not the best example for our young ones to see. In fact, her recent wild behavior has landed her on the cover of Newsweek along with former friend Paris this week. The topic at hand? Whether the Britpack (as Newsweek refers to Britney, Paris, LL, etc.) is having a negative influence on our youth. We know Brit has plenty of young fans that she values so hopefully she will get past this phase quickly.

Hilary Duff Is Growing Up Whether We Like It or Not

Hilary Duff channeled a bygone era posing in a Bonnie and Clyde inspired shoot for the May issue of Allure. Just like the infamous housewife turned bank robber, Hilary is ready to leave the life she knows behind. She opens up to the magazine about being a regular adult, wanting to ditch her squeaky-clean image, and her peers Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, and Avril Lavigne. Here's more:

On Lindsay Lohan: "Supposedly, I stole Lindsay Lohan's boyfriend [Aaron Carter.] We were, like, 13! And I've never stolen anyone's boyfriend! I don't know how you do that! . . . She was talking about it and I wasn't. It made us both look bad and put up a big weirdness. Really she was just a girl my age. We are fine now, by the way."
On Miley Cyrus: "We don't have each other's phone numbers. But when she meets me, she's excited. It's cute – I see a lot of myself in her."
On being with 24-year-old Joel Madden when she was 15: “He was never nervous, like, ‘I could get arrested,’” she says. But does admit, “It looked bad.”

On Avril Lavigne: "I said something about how she didn't like her fans dressing like her, and how she should appreciate that because it's a compliment. She called me a goody-goody [Lavigne called Duff a 'mommy's girl' in Newsweek] Everyone is trying to prove who they are, and their position. So, I'm 'the good girl.' She's 'the bad girl' or 'the party girl.' Sarah Jessica Parker doesn't take her clothes off, but she's not a 'good girl.' [Adult actors] don't get tagged like we do."
On being normal: "I’m not a perfect, prude girl. I like to do normal things that 20 year-olds do."
On pleasing her younger fans: "I don’t want to restrict myself from doing things that stimulate me just to make them happy . . . if they continue liking me, that’s cool, but I don’t want to cater to them. I’m not 13, 14, or 15 anymore.”

Hilary's upcoming role as a sexy Eastern European pop star in War, Inc. will probably change some people's impressions of her. We're all for growing up but we hope she doesn't try too hard to prove she's not a good girl anymore since we think it's part of her appeal unlike many of her peers.

Do You Take Paris More Seriously Now?

You guys decided that you were still sick of Paris when she got out of jail, but she's been trying to change her image in the past few months. Next up, she's headed to Rwanda to take her philanthropic efforts to a new level.

Paris recognizes that this is a big undertaking and admitted to Newsweek that she's scared, saying, "I've heard it's really dangerous, I've never been on a trip like this before." So tell us, do you take Paris more seriously now?

Angelina Opens Up About Her Time In Chad

While we can't wait to see Angelina's next film project, it's no secret that in the meantime she remains committed to her aid work in Africa and around the world. For her recent trip to visit Darfur refugees in Chad, Angelina invited along a photographer and afterwards sat down with Newsweek to talk about her experiences. The images from her trip, like the one below of a young boy who remains tethered for fear that he will run away after witnessing atrocities that have left him psychologically unwell, are intense and heartbreaking, to say the least. Here's an excerpt from her interview:

When did it occur to you that you could do something about this directly? Did people approach you or -
I approached them. I think they thought I was a little crazy.

When was this?
Six years ago. I was very nervous to call the U.N. agency at the time. I [was] considered a rebel in Hollywood. At the time I was also a bit of the wild child. So first I went to Washington [to the UNHCR office] and I sat with everybody there and said, "You know, I know you don't know me. You might have heard things about me… And I don't want to bring negative attention to your agency. If you could just help me, I'll pay my way."

I spent the next year and a half going to, first, two camps in Africa, and then Pakistan and Cambodia. And with no cameras and with no press and had the opportunity to have this great education before I spoke at all…. I was transformed in such an amazing way.

But you do have photographers following you now.
It took me a while to agree to do it. I guess I saw that so many times the picture comes before the knowledge and the substance and I certainly didn't want to do that to myself or the organization. And also, I really just was shy. I was shy about sitting on the floor and talking to a woman and having a camera take a picture because I thought it was making less of my conversation with her. But… I was changed by the faces of the people I saw. "It is something that I am incapable of describing...those faces and that place and those people. And so I think it's just-let the people speak for themselves through the camera. And if I can draw you in a little because I'm familiar, then that's great. Because I know that at the end you're not looking at me, you're looking at them.

I think it's fair to say people start out by looking at you, Angelina.
As long as they end up looking at them, that's the point.

Do you worry about people who say this is celebrity tourism?
I don't know if anybody saying that has spent the last six years of their life going to over 30 camps and really spending time with these people. I can't care. At the end of the day, I'm sure a lot of criticism could keep a lot of people from doing this kind of work…

If someone had a direct criticism of my opinion on the issue, if someone had a direct criticism of the image shown because they think it hurts somebody then I will take that into consideration. But there are a lot of people that simply have an immediate gut reaction and they just don't want to combine artists with foreign policy. And hey, I understand. I get it. I know where you're coming from. And to each his own. … You know, I was more shy when I first went into a camp that other field officers would not want me there.

There will always be ways to find fault with Angelina and her efforts, but I do think she is committed and deserves positive recognition, too. At least she seems not to care what the public says either way.
