The Darkest Hour Trailer: When Aliens Attack Emile Hirsch

The trailer for The Darkest Hour starts off like a music video: we see a bunch of twentysomethings (including Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, and Rachael Taylor), head to Moscow where they take in gorgeous scenery by day and party it up with beautiful people by night. The dream becomes a nightmare however, when Moscow is attacked by a mysterious species that starts sucking up all the energy and electricity they can. Thus begins a face-off, led by Hirsch, to protect our planet.

If the premise sounds silly, it's because it is - there's really nothing new here other than the Russian setting and a new crop of faces, but overall, The Darkest Hour looks like a slicker version of your typical teen horror movie. It does look pretty stylish though, so maybe we've got a fun popcorn movie on our hands. To watch the trailer, just

John Krasinski Goes Indie For Nobody Walks

Jim Halpert is lining up his next vacation from The Office: John Krasinski is in talks to star in Nobody Walks, an indie drama written by Lena Dunham. The film focuses on a family and young artist who disrupts their lives after her weekend stay turns permanent. Rosemarie DeWitt and Olivia Thirlby are also on board; though, there's no confirmation on who's playing whom, my guess is Krasinski and DeWitt lead the family with Thirlby as the artist.

Lately, Krasinski's movie career seems to be taking a direction toward bigger studio films, like next month's Something Borrowed, but I'm eager to see him back in an indie, since I loved him in Away We Go.

Paris, Nicole, and Mischa Still Heart Ronson After All These Years

Charlotte Ronson played hostess last night at a bash in LA celebrating her latest I Heart Ronson collection for JCPenney. Her past parties have been famous for causing drama between Lindsay Lohan and Samantha, but yesterday's seemed to go off without a hitch as LL dealt with bigger legal issues. Charlotte and Samantha partied with their childhood friends Nicky and Paris Hilton, while Nicole Richie chatted with Rashida Jones and Benji Madden after her trip to NYC for the Costume Institute Gala. The whole gang was there to see Samantha take the stage on her guitar, with even Eclipse's Nikki Reed coming out to join the fun.

Movie Preview: Breaking Upwards

The only thing I love more than seeing a good story played out on screen is a movie with an equally good story behind it. In the upcoming indie film Breaking Upwards, Daryl and Zoe are a twentysomething couple who decide to take some time apart to figure out if they're meant to be together. Here's the twist: they also allow themselves a few days a week to be a full-on couple. Adult coming-of-age tales are nothing new, but I'm intrigued because Breaking Upwards is actually based on Daryl and Zoe's real-life relationship and breakup experiment (the actors play themselves and Daryl Weir directed).

The film looks sweetly relatable, thanks to references like shared Netflix queues and gchat conversations (you know, the important factors in relationships these days). The realness of the characters and their chemistry also shines through in the preview, though I was happy to see a couple of other familiar faces in the trailer - most notably Olivia Thirlby.

SJP Has SATC Support at Her New York Morgans Premiere

Sarah Jessica Parker stepped out in black for the NYC premiere of Did You Hear About The Morgans? last night. SJP looked gorgeous in bright pink with costar Hugh Grant at the London screening last week, and this time she had some girls to pose with too. Fellow members of the Sex and the City fab foursome Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon joined in the fun. On the red carpet, SJP had nothing but kind things to say about Miley Cyrus who she joked is surprisingly tall "like a Viking" and is making a cameo in the anticipated sequel. Most of you weren't loving the first SATC2 tease poster, but it's still a thrill to see the ladies together on the red carpet. Sarah has this movie to support before it's out on Friday, and a few more months until SATC2 mania sets in leading up to the May release.

Movie Preview: Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Uncertainty

You all agreed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is so hot right now, so here's a treat for fans. In the upcoming Uncertainty, Gordon-Levitt stars as Bobby, who leaves a major decision up to a coin flip along with his girlfriend Kate (played by Wolverine's Lynn Collins). We then watch as the two very different scenarios play out for the couple: one is action-packed while the other is more emotionally grappling. It looks kind of like Sliding Doors, but even more intense.

I'd definitely check this one out for JLG alone, but I am a little worried that the film is already too much like other movies. Besides Sliding Doors, I'm also immediately reminded of Eagle Eye and Phone Booth. New York, I Love You: A Jigsaw Puzzle That Doesn't Quite Fit

As a city with so much personality and penchant for possibility, it's no surprise that the follow-up to Paris, Je t'aime heads to New York. New York, I Love You is a tale of the connections and personal missteps that occur every single day in the city that never sleeps. It plays out like a movie version of a song mash-up: some story lines are linear and independent of the rest while other characters wander in and out of each other's lives. Throw an all-star cast in there, and you could possibly have a recipe for perfection.

Unfortunately, the ingredients don't blend together as well as I had hoped, and instead we're left with an engaging but bland look at a handful of trials and tribulations in relationships. To see what I mean, just

Made up of a series of short films, New York, I Love You is an homage to the city as well as the residents who hold it near and dear to their hearts. The "anything can happen" theme is alive and well, as strangers become acquaintances and friends, putting so much emphasis on each and every interaction that we take part in on a regular basis.

You meet a few characters that represent New York well enough; Bradley Cooper is the guy who's constantly jumping into a cab the same time as someone else, Orlando Bloom is the struggling musician who turns to Central Park for inspiration, Hayden Christensen is the pick-pocket who's as sexy as he is dangerous. But sometimes it feels just a little too forced; like the film is primarily concerned with proving that New York is a melting pot. Rather than seeing a few love stories shine through stereotypes, I was more distracted by the fake accents.

As with Paris Je t'aime, some of the stories shine brighter than others. Natalie Portman directs a sweet piece about a relationship between a father and daughter; Olivia Thirlby and Anton Yelchin are refreshing as a younger pair who makes the prom a night to remember. The lighter films are breaths of fresh air amongst others that are trying too hard to be hip and stylized.

The ensemble cast certainly gives the movie a boost; even when it's not provoking the deepest of emotions, the film always had my attention. There are solid performances all-around, particularly from Chloris Leachman and Eli Wallach as an aging couple who are still bickering when they aren't helping each other cross the street. It is the most hopeful of the scenarios, and by far the sweetest and most touching.

The film provides plenty of the standard money shots of Manhattan: a typical day in Grand Central Station in fast forward, subway rides, hours of people watching in a coffee shop. The encounters feel authentic and realistic, but the failure lies in the inability to make us feel something on a deeper level. Sometimes you can relate to the characters, and sometimes you feel sorry for them, but it doesn't squeeze your heart nearly enough - and with a title like New York, I Love You, this a disappointment.

Mischa and Hilary Heart Ronsons Without LL

It was practically a Ronson convention last night as Charlotte celebrated her I Heart Ronson line with JC Penney in NYC. Samantha and Mark manned the DJ booth, while Charlotte, mom Anne, and siblings Alexander and Annabelle mingled with a crowd that included Zoe Kravitz, Olivia Thirlby, and Sophia Bush. Mischa Barton brought along her costar on The Beautiful Life, Ashley Madekwe, though one person conspicuously absent from the party was Lindsay Lohan. LL spent her night out in the city anyway, but considering her drama at Charlotte's last bash, perhaps there's a reason she wasn't there to toast the latest collection.

Movie Preview: What Goes Up

The cast for What Goes Up is pretty great: Steve Coogan, Molly Shannon, Olivia Thirlby, Josh Peck, Hilary Duff and more (oooh, I love seeing Thirlby and Peck on screen together again after starring in The Wackness). It's hard to decipher what exactly is going on in the trailer (there are nerdy students, there seems to be a death) so I'll leave it to the movie's website to sum up the plot:

It is 1986. An emotionally damaged New York reporter is sent to cover the hometown hoopla for a local hero. But rather than pursue his assignment, which leaves him cold, he follows a group of disaffected students, whose own hero - their beloved, unconventional teacher - has just died under a cloud of scandal. Their passionate and, at times, ludicrous expressions of grief attract the reporter.

Interestingly, this is the kind of independent movie you'd expect to see at the larger film festivals, given the names in its ensemble cast, but it didn't, which is a thing that makes me go "hmm." The movie hits theaters in limited release May 29. To watch the trailer for yourself,

Mary-Kate Has Many Outfits For Every Red Carpet Occasion

Mary-Kate Olsen looked put together and pretty in white and a little more mussed up in a short flowered number at last night's NYC premiere of The Wackness. Can't blame her for the unbrushed hair when we can clearly see she just slipped out of one dress and into another. She missed the LA Film Festival premiere of the movie on Tuesday, but was happy to pose alongside her costars Olivia Thirlby and Josh Peck. While we anxiously await this one on the big screen around the country, I can't wait to see Mary-Kate on one of my new favorite shows Samantha Who? next season. Here's to more acting and fewer negative rumors from this half of the twins from here on out.
