Matt Damon Gets Charitable in Parade Magazine

Matt Damon is this week's Parade Magazine cover boy, spreading the word about his charity work. Just in time for his birthday on Thursday and despite long hours on the set of his new film, he proves he's not too busy to give back to those in need around the globe. Using way less yelling than he did on Entourage, Matt explains how being charitable from a young age has affected his life, and how giving back in small ways can make a big difference. Here's more:

On how he got his charitable start: "When I was a boy, my mom had a magnet on the refrigerator with a little picture of Gandhi along with a quote from him. It said: “No matter how insignificant what you do may seem, it is important that you do it.” As a child, I was raised to believe that, and to this day I do my best to live it."
On how visiting impoverished countries has affected him: "I’ve taken a lot of trips in the last few years to places like Africa and India and Haiti to try to learn what conditions are like. You can read about extreme poverty and possible solutions, but it’s really powerful when you get to meet the people and shake their hands and listen to their stories."
On how he juggles travel and family: "I try to keep my trips short because my kids are so young that my wife, Lucy, can’t come. We don’t like to be separated, but we both feel it’s so important to learn about these things."

Drew Leads Her Own Parade to Happiness

Drew Barrymore is on the cover of this week's Parade magazine, looking adorable in her brightly colored outfits. While Sunday's Emmy Awards were all about Grey Gardens, Drew sat down with the magazine to discuss her upcoming directorial debut, Whip It! She also opened up about her views on love, growing up in Hollywood, and her relationship with her mother - a theme that's explored in depth through her film. Here's more:

What she learned from growing up in Hollywood: "I've stopped believing in happy endings. I've started believing in good days. At the end of my movie, there's honesty. There's truth. There's peace. What tomorrow will bring is still in question. There is a joy that's earned by failure or triumph. All those things add up to teach us, if we are open to it."
Where her relationship stands with her mother: "I believe she will see the film [Whip It]. I believe she does feel pride in me. I used to pull a lot emotionally from all the stuff with my family, but I did not do this movie to cleanse myself of the mother/daughter debacle that happened in my life. I have been much more objective about my childhood and my relationship with my mother in these last few years."
Her outlook on happiness: "It feels as if I'm willing myself to be happy. I do feel as if I am thrusting myself forward all the time. Nancy, who runs my production company and is my favorite person I've met in my life so far, had on her refrigerator the sign 'HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE.' When I first saw it, I thought, 'That is so simple and yet complex and wise."

Brad Pitt's Life Is a Parade of Family, Love, and Travel

Brad Pitt is appearing on another cover as he starts promoting Inglourious Basterds including this weekend's Parade. In addition to striking a series of sexy poses, he sat down to chat about his priorities. He spoke a little about his love of family, including his newly 8-year-old son Maddox, and the life he and Angelina have built together. Here's more:

On wanting what's best for his kids: "Would it bother me if a child of mine turns out to be gay? No, not one bit. Listen, I want my kids to live the lives they want to live. I want them to be fulfilled. I hope I teach my kids to be who they really are."
On not marrying Angelina: "I have love in my life, a soul mate--absolutely. When someone asked me why Angie and I don't get married, I replied, 'Maybe we'll get married when it's legal for everyone else.' I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it--hate mail from religious groups. I believe everyone should have the same rights. They say gay marriage ruins families and hurts kids. Well, I've had the privilege of seeing my gay friends being parents and watching their kids grow up in a loving environment."
On the right to love: "Man, I resent people telling others how to live! It drives me mental! Just the other night, I heard this TV reverend say that Angie and I were setting a bad example because we were living out of wedlock, and people should not be duped by us! It made me laugh. What damn right does anyone have to tell someone else how to live if they're not hurting anyone? How many times do you think real love comes to someone in a lifetime? If you're lucky, maybe two or three."

On real love: "Do you know how you tell real love? It's when someone else's interest trumps your own. I like to put it that way: trumps your own. Love of somebody else--of family, of your kids--becomes the most important, most worthwhile thing in your life. It's what you foster and protect. You have to recognize real love when it's there and know that in going after it there is always risk. To live with love, you have to chance losing it. That's also true when you decide to have kids. It's the risk you take for love."
On his early days: "I liked to smoke a bit of grass at the time, and I became very sheltered. Then I got bored. I was turning into a damn doughnut, really. So I moved as far away from that as I could. I was done. In Missouri, where I come from, we don't talk about what we do--we just do it. If we talk about it, it's seen as bragging."
On building his home: "This was my first architectural experience where I tried doing something myself. It is something I wanted to do for decades. This is like play to me. It's the only thing that can take me away from any problems I may have. After a few years of work, it came out so nice. Now I've got so many damn kids, it's the only place we could all fit in. We're double-bunking rooms as it is.."
On the stone grotto behind the waterfall in their pool: "[It] 's a great place for sex."

Bikini-Clad Vanessa Opens Up About Being Shy

Vanessa Hudgens looked perfectly summery, posing in a few swimsuits for the latest issue of Parade. While promoting her film Bandslam she talked about her childhood and why she tries to stay private about her boyfriend Zac Efron. Here are some highlights:

On the constant gossip about her relationship with Zac: "That's why I'm extremely guarded. I really do try to watch everything I say. Because one little tiny slip, and it's like the world is coming to an end! It is hard. I do always have a wall up. But I feel by doing it, I keep myself safe. . . . I try not to read the blogs or what people say about me. Because that's what brings everybody down - no matter what you do, you're always going to have haters."
On being shy growing up: "When I was young, I would not talk to anybody if I didn't know them. I'd hide behind my mom if she tried to introduce me to anyone. . . . I would call her at work nonstop, to the point where she got fired. It was horrible. . . . When I was on the stage, I felt like I was hiding behind a person, and I adored it."
On the High School Musical franchise: "[It] was the best thing that could and possibly will ever happen to me. I got to make lifelong friends. I had the most incredible time of my life."

Cameron Wants Us to Know She's Not a Man-Hater

Before Cameron Diaz spent her long weekend frolicking around Hawaii in her bikini, she sat down for an interview with Parade magazine. The actress is promoting My Sister's Keeper and she shared her feelings on everything from her love life to growing older and grieving over her father's death. Here's more:

On men: "Men are wonderful. I don't think my feeling about that is ever going to change. I'm never going to feel differently about men. I'm not a man-hater. It's just not in my nature. I think guys are amazing. I love the dichotomy, the differences in men and women. I think it's wonderful. It keeps things interesting. "
On having kids: "I think that it’s normal for people to ask that, especially of someone my age, because it seems like the obvious thing: ‘Why haven’t you done it?’ It doesn’t bother me. It’s not the cross I bear. I’m not somebody who is going to declare either way if I’m absolutely going to or I’m absolutely not going to have children. I have no idea. I’m still young. I have an unbelievable life. In some ways, I have the life that I have because I don’t have children. I don’t think it’s a compromise to have children,” she adds. “I don’t think it’s a compromise not to. I think it’s just a different choice."
On her past relationships: "I think that what I’ve found, in my experience, is that you always find the person who you’re meant to be with at that time in your life. And what I’ve also found is that you have to move on from those people at certain times, because that’s the way it happens. For me personally, there’s nothing wrong with that. A lot of people find themselves trapped in something that they’ve outgrown and are unhappy. And they don’t know how to get out of it because they think that they’re supposed to make it happen."

On having ugly days: "Oh, sh- yeah. I have them. I don't declare myself as one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. That's other people's label. I don't think that self-deprecation is healthy for people. I think you should have a healthy relationship with yourself. And so we all have our 'up' days and we all have our 'down' days. But I'm not going to walk through this world hating myself because somebody else doesn't think I'm pretty. All I can do is know how I feel about myself."
On getting older: "I don't have a problem with growing older. I really don't. I have no problem with it. It's wonderful. Thank God we get older because if we're not getting older, we're dead. This is a much better option, to be getting older. And if we're not going forward, then we're stagnant, and we're stuck. And I've been stuck before. And I don't like it. It's not fun."
On her father's death: "My father passed away while I was in the middle of filming. I took time off to do what I had to do with my family. And then I had to go back to work. How if affected my performance I can't tell you, but certainly my father's death will be a part of me forever, and I'm sure it's going to be a part of all of the roles that I play now. It's been a year since he died, and it's been an incredibly transformative year. It's just something that's going to be with me forever."

Kate Winslet's Husband Keeps Things Exciting With Leo

Kate Winslet glows on the latest cover of Parade Magazine and brings her refreshing candor to the interview as she promotes Revolutionary Road. Kate opened up about what it was like working with Leonardo DiCaprio after all of these years and how her husband helped keep their chemistry natural. Here are some highlights:

On working with her husband and Leo: "Sam would try to surprise me or surprise Leo when we were doing scenes together, and because Leo and I do have sort of an almost telepathic connection, because we've known each other for such a long time and have remained friends consistently over all of these years, I know how Leo thinks, I know how he works, as he does with me. Sometimes, in order to just twist the scene around, Sam would quietly say to Leo, 'Just surprise her; try this thing.' Or he would come to me and say, 'Try this -- don't tell him you're going to do it.' So he would have to do that, so that Leo and I were able to keep it fresh and alive."
On how she and Leo have aged onscreen: "I’m like, ‘Yes, damn it! Look at those foreheads move!' I mean, he has this amazing furrow here"-she points to a spot between her eyebrows-"which wasn’t as prominent then, and this"-Winslet points to the wrinkles on her own forehead-"is much more prominent in me now. I just love seeing those things. I am enjoying my face changing, as well as realizing that at the same time, as you get older, the machine isn’t as well-oiled as it was."
On Halle Berry's recently saying, "Kate Wins-let is always naked, sitting on a toilet, or running buck naked. She’s free. I want to be the kind of actress who can really be comfortable with my body like that.”: “Oh! That’s so amazing. That is worth the pain! I am thrilled to hear someone like Halle say something like that. But what I would want to say to her is, ‘Well, you can,’ because all I do is say, ‘I don’t give a ____!’”

We can't wait to see if the chemistry is still there between Kate and Leo but considering the talent between those two, we can count on a fabulous film.

All Reese Witherspoon Needs Is Love, Not Marriage

Reese Witherspoon looks wholesome on this week's cover of Parade magazine. The actress has been promoting Four Christmases and talking a lot about her family life as well as showing off her inner country girl charm. We love Reese's honesty and in this interview she talks about her divorce from Ryan and how she feels about marriage now that she's in a serious relationship again. Here are some highlights:

On marriage: "Family is all we have in life, but I don’t know how I feel about marriage. Obviously, I’m not far enough out of being married to think about doing it again. You sort of reconstitute your family. You find a family, with people who come into your life for a reason."
On divorce: "There are things in my life that are hard to reconcile, like divorce. Sometimes it is very difficult to make sense of how it could possibly happen. Laying blame is so easy. I don’t have time for hate or negativity in my life. There’s no room for it. When you make wrong choices, you have to take responsibility for them: ‘What part of this do I own?’ I struggle to figure out what made me make those choices. All I can hope for is that I’ve learned something from it and won’t make the same choices again."

Angelina Talks Changeling and Motherhood

Angelina Jolie premiered Changeling last weekend with Brad by her side, and she also opened up about the film and her family to Parade magazine and German Vanity Fair. While we're still debating the controversial Angelina breast-feeding W cover we saw this morning and waiting to see the rest of the shoot, check out her talking about the film, her kids, and Brad. Here's more:

Q: In Changeling, fate intervenes. Do you believe in that kind of mysterious turn of events that can dramatically change one's life?
A: Only in a positive way. When I met my son Maddox, I went to Cambodia and left feeling I'd left something behind. I went back on a humanitarian mission and I felt, "My son's here." It was the strangest feeling. I woke up that morning thinking, "They're going to introduce me to my kid today and I wonder how I'm going to feel." And the moment I saw Maddox I knew I was his mother. I can't explain it.
Q: Does doing a film like this make you feel even more protective of your own kids?
A: We have a high-profile family, but I don't want my children to be scared when we have to quickly get into the car because some person is running at us with a camera or something. It is a fine line of wanting them to be aware of strangers but not making them afraid. I suppose that, like with everything with children, it's just communication and being honest with them.
Q: What helps you deal with all the fame and celebrity that surrounds you?
A: I'm just a mom and I'm very grounded by my family. I'm very happy, and I'm so lucky. The world can like me, hate me, fall apart around me, and at least, you know, I wake up with my little kids and I'm happy.

On how Brad took charge after flying back and forth from Europe: "Brad took care of things. He just said, 'Go back to sleep, you have to work tomorrow,' and then went to the living room with the kids. He's an amazing father: totally devoted."
On the twins: "We're exhausted a lot, because it's twice as hard with two babies than with one," she says. "But it's twice as much fun, too. When you look at them, it's like they were made for each other. They smile at each other, sniff each other, touch each other. It's just beautiful. They're totally sweet. They already have completely different personalities. Knox is more the quiet one, very relaxed, while Viv is a little more aggressive and loud."

It's easy to see that Angelina is happiest when surrounded by her children, and we can't wait to see another photo spread of the beautiful family showing off their big smiles.

Christian Reveals a Lighter Side of The Dark Knight

The countdown to The Dark Knight is officially on, which means we can look forward to seeing a lot more of cute Christian Bale as he gets into promotional mode. In Parade he shows off his softer side hanging out with doggies and talking about Heath and his family. Here are highlights:

On Heath Ledger: "I want to talk about Heath. When you miss somebody, you want to speak about him. He was a unique character, a very infectious character. He was a good man, and I was glad to have spent time with him. He was somebody who I’d been seeing on a daily basis for months. It takes a long time to accept that someone’s gone, when all body and mind are telling you that this is somebody you will know for a great deal of time. He was something of a kindred spirit to myself."
On his personal heroes: "Not traditional idols-certainly not superheroes. I don’t think I was particularly in need of that. I never had any fascination with Superman or Spider-Man or a Batman kind of character. If it happened at all, it was imagined characters that I had invented. My dad was a role model for me. He was a fascinating man. There was intrigue and entertainment growing up with him. He gave me an edict that I still pursue: 'Life should never be boring.'"
