Pedro Almodovar Would Direct in English For Meryl Streep or Kate Winslet

Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In will be out in the US this Friday, and he was in NYC this week to screen the film during the New York Film Festival. He and his leading man Antonio Banderas linked up for interviews Monday. The thriller is their latest collaboration after a 21-year break from working together; their last project was 1990's Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, and Almodovar helped launch Banderas's career with other Spanish-language projects like Matador and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Both spoke about their professional reunion, and Banderas revealed what it's like to fully place his trust with a director. Almodovar, who prefers to work independently in Europe, also spoke about the only two actresses he'd be tempted to work with in English. They said:

Almodovar on working in English: "I would like to discover Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet . . . no seriously! One of the reasons, if I make a movie in English, one of the reasons will be just to work with many wonderful actresses and actors that are here. Just the two that I mentioned. But that unfortunately the movies will be in English and I would have to improve my English . . . But really I would like to discover in the sense that it would be the first time for me."
Banderas on what it meant to work with Pedro again: "I did what I think any actor who works with Pedro Almodovar should do, which is to take a leap of faith. With Pedro Almodovar especially."
Almodovar on reuniting with Antonio after 21 years: "What was the same was his disposition toward the work. And fortunately, he's still an attractive man. And he's still so at the age of 51 . . . For me, what was fantastic was that during the shooting he was absolutely the same person. I don't know if he is conscious of that. I have pictures from Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! . . . They are almost the same pictures. The way he behaves with the rest of the crew, or even with me."

Penelope Leaves Javier in Bali to Embrace Pedro in Rome

Penelope Cruz joined Pedro Almodovar in Rome on Saturday for a Broken Embraces photo call at the city's famous Trevi Fountain. She's back on the promotional trail after a brief detour to Bali, where she met up with Javier Bardem at the beach during one of his breaks from filming Eat, Pray, Love. Penelope has been the subject of many rumors about her personal life recently, but she's going to be all business for the next few months with her travels on behalf of her film with Pedro and the upcoming Nine and she was already at LAX again yesterday.

Broken Embraces looks like classic Pedro Almodovar: a sweeping story with a heavy dose of film noir, beautiful to look at, and a dazzling Penelope Cruz. Penelope Finds Embraces All Around NYC

Penelope Cruz had a whirlwind weekend of promoting Broken Embraces in NYC. The Vogue cover girl stepped out in a black leather jacket on Friday and a striped shirt the next afternoon for errand-running, but by Saturday evening Penlope was decked out in a sparkly white gown to be honored at a dinner hosted by Paper magazine. Her late night didn't slow her down yesterday, when she did press in a plaid dress before switching into a gray gown for a premiere with director Pedro Almodovar. Her BFF Salma Hayek brought her husband Francois-Henri Pinault along to pose on the red carpet, though Penelope's own man Javier was off letting her shine in the spotlight solo as engagement rumors continue to circulate.

Movie-to-TV: Almodovar's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

I should really watch Pedro Almodovar's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown again. Actually, I should have just bought that Almodovar collection for myself around the holidays because I don't remember a ton about it besides the fact that I really enjoyed it and I swooned over the skinny, baby-faced version of Antonio Banderas. Today there's another reason to rewatch the madcap comedy: Fox TV Studios is developing an hour-long, English-language TV series based on the movie. The studio has tapped Almodovar fan Mimi Schmir to write the series, as she has already "mined the arena of women in midlife crisis in a novel she is writing based on her 'Hot Flashes' blog."
