Natalie Portman Makes Her Postbaby Event Debut!

Natalie Portman made one her first public appearances last night after welcoming her son, Aleph Millepied, earlier this year. Joining other stars like Mindy Kaling, director Jason Reitman, and Steve Carell, Natalie participated in the Film Independent At LACMA series with a live reading of the 1960 Billy Wilder film The Apartment in LA. Rounding out the cast were Collette Wolfe, Jake Johnson, Pierce Brosnan, Ken Jeong, and Nick Kroll. Mindy tweeted about Natalie's good looks postbaby with her characteristic humor. She wrote, "Surprised to see Steve Carell and Natalie Portman both looking like teenagers. Ugh, so unfair - kill me."

Natalie has been on the West Coast with her young son Aleph as well as her fiancé Benjamin Millepied. The family of three caught up with West Coast-based friends following a whirlwind Fall of traveling that included time in NYC, France, and Switzerland. Natalie and Benjamin have made sure to offer Aleph some culture while in California and were seen showing him the Huntington Library and gardens just a few weeks ago.

Gwen, Kate, and Halle Step Out to Artfully Celebrate Tod's

Tod's opened up its Beverly Hills boutique last night and gathered its famous fans together to honor LA's Museum of Contemporary Arts's new director, Jeffrey Deitch. Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale kept their good times going after a weekend of fun in Las Vegas, and their pal Kate Beckinsale was there in purple to join the party. Beckinsale was also just announced as one of the judges at this year's Cannes Film Festival! Jordana Brewster was equally bright in green, while Kate Bosworth stuck to basic black. Bosworth will soon trade the red carpet for a movie set, as her film Midnight Sun, costarring Jesse Eisenberg, is inching closer to production after winning a large prize from the Tribeca Film Institute's Sloan Filmmaker Fund.

Marisa Tomei stuck with the dark theme, while Neil Patrick Harris ventured out solo. Halle Berry, meanwhile, left Gabriel and Nahla at home and posed for photos in her low-key pair of pants. She gave a kiss to Pierce Brosnan, who arrived with his wife, Keely, before the celeb-filled crowd moved inside to get the bash started.

The Greatest: Doesn't Live Up to Its Lofty Title

Calling a movie The Greatest is setting it up for high expectations. Making it about a family's mourning makes things even stickier. How do you depict grief without getting bogged down in melodramatics? It's a dilemma that The Greatest doesn't quite seem to overcome.

The movie opens with high school seniors Rose (Carey Mulligan) and Bennett (Aaron Johnson) in bed together. After four years of gazing at each other longingly, they finally got up the courage to speak to one another earlier the same day - and now here they are, losing their virginity. Following their roll in bed, they go for a drive where Bennett parks in the road to tell Rose he loves her. And then his car gets hit.

It's a quick run of events that bring the audience face to face with what this film is ultimately about - dealing with death. As Bennett's parents Allen and Grace (Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon) sit in the funeral car with their younger son Ryan (Johnny Simmons), no one says a word. Allen stares ahead in shock. Grace and Ryan look out the windows. For a solid two minutes we feel a sense of the sadness and tension they're going through in a way that seems honest. However, as their story unfolds, rudimentary problems arise. To see what I mean,

read more. Once the family returns home, each person copes with Bennett's loss in his or her own way. Grace sobs into her pillow, whenever she's not obsessively trying to glean details about the accident from the driver in the other car (Michael Shannon), who's still in a coma. In turn, Allen bottles up his feelings, taking more of the strong, silent route. As for Ryan, he attends a counseling group for teens who have lost siblings - not for his own breakthrough mind you, but because he says, he felt like it's what you're supposed to do. He even strikes up a romance (with Zoe Kravitz), so the support group almost seems more like a way for him to meet girls. Then Rose appears on the family's doorstep, a young girl whom they never met - and she's pregnant with Bennett's child. With no real parents other than a mother in rehab, Rose moves in to ultimately learn about her baby's father, despite the fact that no one in the house appears able to talk about him. The family obviously has its share of problems, as does the plot. We are introduced to Allen's female associate whom he obviously had an affair with, but little more of their relationship is revealed, and she's ultimately dropped. Same goes for Kravitz's role. What's worse - in the screening I attended, there were several unintentional laughs. The likely culprits: a few scenes that border on cliche, and a weeping breakdown by Brosnan that feels slightly off-putting coming from a former 007. On the upside, Sarandon can play a tortured mother with her eyes closed, and Mulligan once again mesmerizes with her ability to hold the audience's attention. She is ultimately why I wanted to see this movie, and she's still my favorite part having left it. As for the rest - frankly, who likes a downer?

Carey Has Good Company For Her Screening of The Greatest

Carey Mulligan stepped out in LA last night for a screening of her upcoming film The Greatest. Her boyfriend, Shia LaBeouf, didn't go along for the evening in accordance with their rare red carpet appearance policy, but she did have the company of a similarly plaid-wearing Tobey Maguire and her costar Pierce Brosnan. Their movie opens in limited release next Friday, and in-demand Carey continues to line up new roles. She's likely to take a turn playing Eliza Doolittle in a remake of My Fair Lady, according to the project's writer Emma Thompson.

Movie Preview: Carey Mulligan in The Greatest

She may not have won the Oscar, but Carey Mulligan has still been thrust into the collective consciousness because of An Education. With roles in Wall Street 2 and now The Greatest, it's clear the uber-talented newcomer isn't going anywhere. In the trailer for The Greatest, she plays Rose, a teen who falls for her first love - only to lose him almost immediately in a car accident they're both in. The story shifts to her boyfriend's grieving family, headed by Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon, who have no choice but to take Rose in when she finds herself pregnant with their son's baby.

As much as the movie looks like a tearjerker, it also seems to be a very eloquent portrayal of grief, and being able to forgive and love again. The trailer itself is an emotional roller coaster - try to watch it without getting a lump in your throat - but because the acting looks superb, I won't miss it.

Remember Me: More Likely to Fade Away

Robert Pattinson fans, rest assured: you won't be disappointed with the heartthrob's first post-Twilight flick, Remember Me. Pattinson is the epicenter of the film as Tyler Hawkins, a troubled-but-charming college student with a few anger management problems. His character is a loose cannon and his New York accent is all over the place, but Pattinson is just so watchable that his loyal followers will hardly notice the flaws in the plot that surrounds him. It's everyone who's not in the Twilight bubble that I'm more concerned about.

Pattinson's angsty Tyler has plenty of reasons to brood: he's still reeling with the day-to-day aftermath of his brother's suicide, constantly questioning his own worth and mortality as his 22nd birthday draws near. He's also struggling to come to terms with a mother that he can't connect with and a high-powered lawyer father (Pierce Brosnan) who doesn't seem to understand that parenthood is about more than monetary support. Tyler channels his frustrations into smoking, drinking, and random acts of violence, and eventually lands in jail after assaulting a police sergeant (Chris Cooper).

Tyler's seemingly aimless path turns in a new direction when he hits on the sergeant's daughter, Ally (Emilie de Ravin). Under the urging of his obnoxious roommate Aidan, Tyler schemes to seduce Ally and never call her again to get back at her father. Naturally, Tyler gets a lot more than he bargained for, and - surprise! - falls for Ally instead.

read more. The awkward courtship song-and-dance between Ally and Tyler is both entertaining and realistic. Just like Tyler, Ally has a lot of personality - she's independent and stubborn, but fragile at the same time. Unafraid to call Tyler on his issues but still supporting his rebellious decisions, they bond over family problems and personal quirks (and you know, some college puking). As their flirtation picks up steam and heads toward a real relationship, their chemistry is palpable and believable, but is quickly buried under Tyler's family issues. Director Allen Coulter puts their romance on the back burner to shift back to Tyler's broken relationship with his father and nurturing one with his little sister, Caroline (Ruby Jerins). Tyler's connection with his precocious sister is what will pull on your heartstrings the most. As her tainted role model, he tries to give her the love and attention that their parents don't, while she lectures him on getting his life together. It's a sweetly authentic no-holds-barred relationship that even outshines Tyler's romance with Ally. While the Hawkins family dynamic plays a huge part in the point the film is trying to make, it compromises the leg Remember Me tries to stand on as a love story. If the romance is underdeveloped, then the audience won't root for the couple as hard, which is exactly the position I found myself in. As Tyler's story meanders into different territories, the film as a whole seems more emotionally manipulative than emotionally engaging. Instead of trying so hard to deliver a profound and poetic message about life and the consequences of death, I would have rather seen a focus on the simple yet satisfying love story. As a result, I left the theater feeling just as empty as Tyler does.

Robert Pattinson Has Two Beautiful Dates, Kristen Stewart and Emilie de Ravin, For NYC Remember Me Premiere!

Robert Pattinson and his Remember Me costar Emilie de Ravin hit the red carpet together tonight at their NYC premiere. None of his fellow Twilight cast members were on the tip sheet to attend the event, but Kristen Stewart surprised fans by showing up right behind Rob in lacy gold pants! The two arrived in New York together on Friday night and are apparently sticking close during the trip - so sweet. Rob is fresh off taping his appearance on Jimmy Fallon, which includes the two guys sharing a tree perch.
