Pineapple Express Lights Up NYC

The Pineapple Express pulled up to NYC night for another big red carpet premiere. This time the boys Seth Rogen and James Franco kept it casual and grin-filled for the cameras. As a special treat for us, Lipstick Jungle cutie Robert Buckley came out for the screening - yummy. The movie, which hits theaters today in case you want some midweek laughs, has been getting some pretty good reviews, including from Buzz, who found it to be enjoyable no matter your, uh, mindframe.

Jim, Jenny, Kanye and the Boys Hop on the Pineapple Express

It wasn't just the usual crew of Apatow boys at last night's LA premiere of Pineapple Express. Established and legendary Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy came out to support the younger crew of funny kids while fashion icon (and seriously loving it!) Kanye West also made his way to the screening. Of course, the stars of the movies themselves James Franco and Seth Rogen, meandered down the red carpet all cleaned up, handsome and fancy looking. This high (heh) comedy brings the laughs when it hits theaters next Wednesday.

James Franco Just Keeps Going Higher

James Franco was back in costume as Allen Ginsburg on the NYC set of Howl yesterday afternoon. His schedule is jam packed between his snooze-inducing grad school lectures and working on his controversial UCLA commencement address, but he's already looking towards his next movie project. He just signed on to join forces again with his Pineapple Express costar Danny McBride for another stoner comedy called Your Highness, which is set to begin production this Summer in Ireland. James isn't all work and no play though - he recently shared his top 10 picks of films in the Criterion collection that he likes to chill out and watch.

James Franco transformed into poet Allen Ginsberg on the set of his new movie Howl in NYC yesterday. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ginsberg's most famous work, James is taking on the biopic along with costars Jeff Daniels, Mary-Louise Parker and Paul Rudd. After a year of diverse movies including Pineapple Express, Milk and . . . Nights in Rodanthe, James Franco isn't ready for a break yet. Maybe this role is less of a stretch for James as a dedicated student and future published author himself.

James Franco Is Easy on the Eyes but Hard on Himself

James Franco dove right into his latest photo shoot, getting sexy and soaking wet for the September issue of GQ. His comedic performance in Pineapple Express opened to decent reviews, a welcome change of pace for James, who has struggled in his career in the past. In the article, he gets serious about his method acting, his bad reputation, and why everyone just wants to get high with him. Here are highlights:

On making bad movies: “I put a lot of time into it. I wanted to be the best actor that I could be. It’s just sad for me, because I know I worked so hard, and I just feel like in some ways I kind of blew it. It’s just hard to get away from what I see as the stain of these bad movies.”
On why he didn't get along with some of his Freaks and Geeks costars: “I’ll admit I was not a team player. A lot of it, I think, just had to do with being obnoxious when the camera was on someone else. Maybe I’d eat a banana in the background that would take focus away from other actors. I didn’t think about it that way, but now I could say, ‘Look, the scene’s not about me, it’s about them, just chill out, James. Don’t eat a f*cking banana.’”
On how people have responded to Pineapple Express: “Already, I have had people come up to me in cafés and say, ‘Hey, you’re James Franco, right? Hey, I can’t get hold of my guy-do you know where I can buy some good weed?’ Even in class I’ve had someone come up to me and be, ‘Hey! What’s up, man?’ and give me a handshake and palm me a little bag of weed. I haven’t done drugs, I haven’t even smoked pot, since high school.”

On kissing Sean Penn for the upcoming movie Milk: “It wasn’t twelve hours, but it certainly felt like it. The ﬁrst kiss of the movie was out on Haight Street, with, like, 200 people watching, outside. It was a crane shot-I’m sure in the end it will be a really cool shot, but it starts close and then it takes maybe a minute. That’s a long time on film with everybody watching and, like, a fake mustache getting in your mouth. It was long enough that you couldn’t help thinking, ‘Oh, my God, I’m kissing Spicoli.’ ”

James's string of bad movies is clearly something that haunts him a bit, but maybe the success of Pineapple Express can help him lighten up.

James Franco Gets a Hasty Bar Mitzvah

James Franco kicked off his weekend with a ceremony celebrating his status as the Harvard Hasty Pudding Club's Man of the Year in Cambridge on Friday. The thespians threw James a quickie bar mitzvah as part of his roast, which included wearing an eye patch and a bra in honor of Pineapple Express. James never had a real bar mitzvah, but seemed happy with the substitute as he joked, "Yeah, I guess I wasn't a man until tonight. I don't know if this counts in rabbinical law or whatever, but if it doesn't, I do plan to have a bar mitzvah." James was also a good sport as he kissed his pudding pot and even agreed to pretend to milk a gay cow as a throwback to his Oscar-nominated film.

James Rides the Pineapple Express to the Golden Globes

James Franco was up bright and early in NYC on Wednesday morning and we have a feeling that big smile lasted all the way through Thursday when the Golden Globe Nominations were announced. While his movie Milk didn't do as well as expected, James nabbed a best actor nod for Pineapple Express. James was up late the night before working on a student film for grad school and admits the nomination was a little surprising. Of course, there are no complaints from him - or from us about a chance to see James out on the red carpet come January.

James Franco Is Super Hot in Our Book

There's been lots of love for James with all the critical acclaim surrounding Milk, and he recently opened up a little more about the experience of working with Sean Penn. He's also looking sexy on the cover of December's BlackBook, chatting with the magazine about going back to school - he's working on master's degrees at both NYU and Columbia - as well as his career and his past. Here's more:

On the unexpected success of Pineapple Express: "I find it ironic that I did a lot of serious movies that I worked hard on, and now I’m getting the most response to the movie where I roll a cross joint. The m.o. on that set was to have fun."
On his looks: "When I was in sixth or seventh grade I remember thinking that I wanted to be really buff, and work out a ton. That seemed really attractive to me. And now, I f*cking hate to work out. I hate spending time on anything physical like that. . . In the morning, I throw some kind of gunk in my hair."
On being a bad boy in high school: "I had to stop hanging out with a certain group of people, because I got in so much trouble with them. For some reason, I was like a magnet for the police. I would get caught for the stupidest things. . . wandering around drunk, stuff like that. They weren’t the worst people in the world, it was just that I was really dumb when I was around them."

On going back to school: "Going back to school has been life-changing and life-saving. I wasn’t on the point of suicide, but I wasn’t satisfied."
On getting personally involved in his work: "Movies have their own rewards for an actor. You can feel satisfaction for doing a movie that you believe in, or with critical praise, or good box office. As an actor, you can tell yourself that your self-worth isn’t measured by how your last movie did at the box office. But I found when acting was all I had, inevitably I would be emotionally affected by how well a movie did."
On lightening up: "I think I’m hopefully a much easier guy to be around with on set now,” he says, “just because a) I think I’m more communicative and b) It doesn’t always have to be doom, gloom and pain every second of the shoot."

James seems to be a little more introspective than the average actor, but it's great to see he's learning to enjoy some of the perks of his increasing fame.

James Franco Makes His David Letterman Debut

Cutie James Franco offered a big grin and a wave to his fans on his way to The Late Show in NYC last night. He got to work promoting Pineapple Express before the big premiere tonight, and his chat with Dave was a very special one - his first! James admitted he was nervous as he talked about his grandma, his parents, and how working at McDonald's helped him practice acting and score dates. James has come a long way since his days manning the drive-thru, and we're looking forward to seeing a lot more of that smirk in the next couple of weeks.
