Brad Pitt Brings a Bit of Sun to Rainy Cannes

Brad Pitt stepped out with a smile this morning to promote Killing Them Softly at the Cannes Film Festival. He joined his costars for the photocall and will hopefully have Angelina Jolie on his arm later today for the world premiere. The movie, which we screened already, showcases a humorous and violent side of Brad, which is just the kind of work that has gotten him some of his highest praises, like Inglourious Basterds and Fight Club. Brad was looking every bit the movie star in his gold sunglasses as he arrived during a brief break in the rain. The weather at the festival has been less than ideal so far, but hopefully it will stay clear tonight for his big red-carpet moment. Katie Holmes and Channing Tatum posed with their costars Ray Liotta, Jake Cherry, and James Ransone at the premiere of The Son of No One at Sundance last night. Their movie closed out the star-studded festival, and we enjoyed the gritty crime thriller. Katie is coming from LA, where she shared her well-wishes about friend Victoria Beckham's pregnancy and took care of business with Suri after visiting Tom Cruise in Vancouver. It's the second year in a row that Katie has been at the festival since she brought The Romantics in 2010.

We're covering the Sundance Film Festival from Park City, and even if you can't be there too, you can still get a peek at some of the films that'll be premiering at the festival. Case in point: The Son of No One trailer has just dropped, starring Channing Tatum, Katie Holmes, Al Pacino, and Tracy Morgan. Tatum heads up the stellar cast (Juliette Binoche and Ray Liotta also star) as a young cop assigned to work in the New York City neighborhood he grew up in. Though he works hard and tries to live a decent life with his family (Holmes plays his wife), a huge secret in his past is still chasing him.

Tatum has gone dark and dramatic before (the director of this film, Dito Monteil, also cast Tatum in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints), but the real surprise is seeing Morgan, as a childhood friend of Tatum's, get serious. Charlie St. Cloud: Cloudy With a Chance of Cheeseball

Zac Efron has all the makings of a movie star - the hair, the girlfriend, the six-pack - but in Charlie St. Cloud, he proves that he's more than just a teen idol. OK, he's got a really pretty face, but more importantly, the boy can act. There are several scenes in the new drama where Efron musters up emotional meltdowns, and dare I say, even I felt a little choked up.

Efron plays the title character, a recent high school grad who loses his younger brother Sam (Charlie Tahan) in a car accident and begins to see visions of his little bro in the woods where they practice baseball. Though Efron's acting is at his best, the movie itself doesn't quite hit the mark. To see what I mean,

Charlie can't grieve for Sam, and he puts his own life on hold as a result. He defers his college sailing scholarship and opts to work at the local graveyard as a groundskeeper. Everyone in town thinks he's crazy, save for one fellow sailing enthusiast named Tess (Amanda Crew), who is oddly intrigued by Charlie's plight. The two start spending time together but as they do, Charlie can't devote as much time to his brother's memory, leaving him with the decision to hold on or move on.

This movie feels more like a made-for-TV movie than something worthy of the big screen. The script is rife with syrupy lines, the spiritual undertones sometimes feel too forced, and some of the camera shots aren't the greatest. Plus, aside from Efron, the only other two major characters are Kim Basinger (who plays his mother) and Ray Liotta (who portrays the religious paramedic who brings Charlie back to life). Though they're sufficient in their roles, they don't exactly make the film more memorable.

This isn't Efron's magnum opus, and we're going to have to wait for another project to really launch him into serious A-list status - but at least this film proves he's almost ready.

Movie Preview: Crossing Over

Despite some moments that seem a little overwrought, this trailer for Crossing Over (not to be confused with the TV show about talking to dead people) is one of the most riveting previews I've seen in a while. It looks a bit like Crash (several storylines weaving together in various ways), but with the subject matter being illegal immigration (and what it means to be an American and what's right and what's wrong, etc. etc.).

The other intriguing aspect of the trailer is the impressive cast: Harrison Ford, Ashley Judd, Ray Liotta, Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Summer Bishil (Towelhead) and Alice Eva.

Oh, did I forget to mention Jim Sturgess?

Crossing Over opens sometime in 2009. This trailer really sucked me in, so to watch for yourself,

Charlize Theron took advantage of the warm weather in New York with a little plaid dress she wore on The View yesterday before joining her man Stuart and costars for a screening of Battle in Seattle. Charlize always manages to look fabulous from the red carpet to the beach, and her efforts earned her a spot as one of People's 10 Best Dressed Stars of 2008. While we're not sure if we agree with some of the other honorees, Charlize's style continues to impress us even after the results are in.

Sugar Bits - Kiefer Sutherland Doing Well in Prison

According to a jail spokesman, Kiefer Sutherland has been a model prisoner since checking in on Wednesday, spending his days folding prison laundry and serving his fellow inmates dinner. The spokesman also said that Kiefer will definitely serve his entire 48-day sentence. Even Jack Bauer can't get out of this one. - People
Hydroderm, the cosmetic company suing its spokeswoman Teri Hatcher, says that despite an exclusive contract, Teri's image has been used to promote 22 other beauty products. Teri, on the other hand, says that the company is only suing her so that it doesn't have to pay her and that she is "ready, willing, able and eager" to work for them. Sounds like this should be settled by just making the commercial. - AP
Ray Liotta has pleaded guilty to his February DUI charge in exchange for a lighter sentence, which will see him pay a $300 fine, attended a drug and alcohol class, and have three years probation. Sounds like a pretty good deal relative to Kiefer. - TMZ

Biel Doesn't Want To Take It All Off

Jessica Biel and her newly darkened locks hung around on the set of Powder Blue with Ray Liotta yesterday. Despite having one of Hollywood's sexiest bodies, Jessica is shy about showing too much skin for the cameras. Apparently she's taking a page out of Natalie Portman's book and is scared that photos of her shooting racy scenes will be leaked on to the internet. She's done a lot of photo shoots in minimal clothing, so we're wondering how much more she's going to have to bare for her role. Maybe Justin can give her a little lesson in being comfortably topless in front of the cameras.

Jessica Biel Goes Dark

Jessica Biel's new role apparently involved a hair color change, because the actress was sporting a much darker 'do on the set of her new movie, Powder Blue with costar Ray Liotta. I'm assuming make up has something to do with it, but this hair color kinda washes the life out of uber-fit Jessica. Unfortunately for Jess, her (grumpy) boy JT's tour is bringing him to the south and then Canada before he's back in LA in September. Maybe he left his girl some of his grandmother's pecan pie to remember him by. You know, since it looks like she indulges in sweets all the time.
