J. Lo: Child of Scientology

Jennifer Lopez is not a Scientologist, okay? But that doesn't mean she doesn't love herself some of those zany characters. Not only is she BFF with the Cruise/Holmes duo, but she recently revealed that there's another Scientologist in her life. And no, I'm not talking about a secret relationship with Danny Masterson. Miami's NBC6 reports:

When asked about what she thought about the negative perception some people have about Scientology, Lopez replied, "I, myself, am Catholic. But it's just sad that people would look at it (Scientology) in that way."

J.Lo also has a personal connection to the Church of Scientology.

"My dad has been a Scientologist for 20 years," she said. "It's weird people want to paint it in a negative way."

Twenty years a Scientologist? That's like Tom Cruise Scientology status. J-Lo's dad must be Scientology visionary, nay, revolutionary of Cruise-like proportions. Only not as aggressive. And hopefully he keeps his shoes off the couch.

Jennifer Lopez smiled big at last night's Women in Hollywood Tribute, but these days the star has more on her mind than just fancy dresses and red carpets. She recently sat down with The Daily Beast showing her tender motherly side - of course, Emme has her ears pierced already and Max wears sequins - while opening up about a nervous breakdown, her relationship with Scientology and more. Here are highlights:

On going through a breakdown: "I don't get nervous. I don't get depressed. Blah blah blah," she says, but pauses to reconsider. Still staring into her daughter's eyes, she reaches an instant, instinctual decision. She will start now, in this moment, not-lying in her daughter's presence. "There was a time when I was very overworked and I was doing music and movies and so many things. I was suffering from a lack of sleep. And I did have a kind of nervous breakdown. I froze up on a set. Well, not on a set, but in my trailer. I was like - I don't want to move. I don't want to talk. I don't want to do anything. It was on that movie Enough," she says, referring to the film in which she played a battered wife who finally fights back. "Yeah. I did. I had a nervous breakdown."
On Scientology: "I have no problems with it and it really actually bothers me that people have such a negative feeling towards it. . . Yeah. I wouldn't mind [sending Emme and Max to Scientology School]. Not at all. Because I know that the technologies that they have are very helpful… It's all about communication. That's the thing I really don't like about talking about this. I do know so many great people who do do it, who choose it as a lifestyle and really follow it and it is their religion…I just wish that people wouldn't judge it without knowing what it is."
On her reputation: "I think I've always been a favorite to pick on," she says. "Once you have a lot of success you become a target in many ways…I just think that the whole diva thing is a misrepresentation of who I am. I think some of that is because of where I came from. I came from the Bronx and a certain background. I worked really hard. I kept my focus on the right things. And still even with that they find stuff to pick on."

She also revealed her thoughts on why her baby pictures sold for so much. As for her reputation, she'll always enjoy the finer things, but her work ethic and loving family both help her lose the "diva" image and seem to keep her more grounded than ever.

Tom and Katie Successful Scientology Recruiters?

We were all at a total loss as to how Tom and Katie planned out their wedding guest list. Who knew they were friends with J Lo and Marc, and Jenny and Jim? We're now starting to get answers - apparently Katie and Tom are trying to get the two couples into Scientology. Jennifer may even be finding interest in the controversial religion because she's having difficulty getting pregnant. Page Six reports:

"Jim is taking the introductory and beginner's courses right now," a source told Page Six. Another source notes that Lopez, a close friend of Scientologist Leah Remini, "has started using Scientology phrases and explains the church to people. Leah and Jennifer have been friends for years, and Leah has always talked to her about the church without pressuring her.

"We can see Scientology appealing to Jennifer because, in the early stages, it is a lot of self-help." However, Lopez's husband, Marc Anthony, is a devout Catholic and is probably resistant to Scientology, which believes in space aliens but not a God.

Some observers speculate that Lopez, who has had trouble conceiving in the past, could be leaning to the Scientologists for help in having a baby. Reps for Lopez said, "I have no knowledge of this, but I probably wouldn't have a comment on it if I did." A mouthpiece for Carrey insisted, "He is not taking classes."

Tom knows his Scientology

Maybe it was the EW article last week when he seemed misinformed about his own religion, but this time when a reporter questioned him, he put him in his place. Perez reports that at the War of the Worlds press conference yesterday, Tom got agitated and annoyed when a ignorant reporter started asking Scientology questions. Click on the link to read details, but the bottom line was Tom's advice, :

"If you are interested in Scientology you should read Evolution of a Science," Cruise said.

"I don't know if you've ever read that. That will give you a greater understanding of what Scientology is."

He's always trying to convert people.

In other news, Page Six reports the parents for Cruise and Katie were all together in NYC. The Holmes are trying to get more comfortable with the craziness and the fact that their daughter is all of a sudden going to be a Scientologist.

What Do You Think About Tom Talking Scientology?

Over the weekend this new video of Tom Cruise talking about Scientology surfaced and started to make its way around the Internet. The pieced together interview was recently shown when the actor won the Freedom Medal of Valor Award at the International Association of Scientologists. It's about 9 minutes long (fyi, the last minute or so is the best part), and shows Tom talking very passionately about his faith and religion in a way we've never quite seen before, including some classic quotes and that laugh. The video was probably never meant to be public, but now that it's out - what do you think about hearing Tom open up about Scientology?

Victoria Just Says No To Scientology

The Beckhams may love their new BFF's Tom and Katie but don't look for them to pick up Scientology anytime soon. Tom has evidently been trying to get David to join his religion but apparently Victoria has put her foot down. Posh would rather spend her money on her new home, boys and shopping habits then donate it to a religion. Here's more:

A source close to the Beckhams said: “Tom spoke to David for hours about Scientology. He feels it could help to lift him out of the blues over his football career.

“But Victoria is having none of it. She can’t see the point of joining something like that where you have to donate money.”

Yeah, why spend your money to get to Operating Thetan Level VII when you can shop your heart out on Robertson Boulevard? We love that Posh is sticking to her guns on this one.

Tom, Katie and Suri Are Business As Usual

After Tom spent his afternoon around town with Jerry Seinfeld and Katie promoted Mad Money, the Cruise trio met up for dinner last night and Suri was the star of the show. There are a lot of things - good bad and everything in between - being said about Tom and Scientology this week, perhaps more than ever with the simultaneous unauthorized biography release. In case you missed it, there was a whole new batch of videos this morning continuing to uncover more of what goes on behind closed doors. None of that wipes the grins off Tom and Katie's faces, however. Plus there's no way not to smile seeing little Suri and her bottle.

On Monday we got the video that featured Tom Cruise getting very passionate about Scientology. He received the Freedom Medal of Valor Award at the International Association of Scientologists and now we have more videos from that event for your viewing enjoyment. Watch the first video where Tom makes his acceptance speech for his Freedom Medal and salutes LRH, and after the jump he explains how he helped fireman and New York City with the aftermath of 9/11, claiming that he helped the detoxification process when the EPA could not. Do you still think he's going too far or is he just really enthusiastic about his beliefs?

Suri Gets a Lift From Tom and Jerry

While Katie was busy promoting Mad Money all over NYC, Tom was on daddy duty yesterday. Cruise was lucky enough to get some help from his buddy Jerry Seinfeld. Looks like their double date the night before went very well. Jerry is even kind enough to help schlep Suri's diaper bags around Manhattan. Although Jerry is not a Scientologist he has said it helped him become a better stand up comedian. I wonder what he has to say about the recent Scientology video making the rounds these days.
