Scott Speedman seemed to be in high spirits and was looking hot last night at the NYC premiere of his latest film, Barney's Version. He was joined by costars Paul Giamatti and the lovely Minnie Driver, who spiced up the red carpet in a strapless gold and black minidress. Paul and Scott play friends in the quirky tale of an unlucky-in-love character named Barney. The film was among the honorees showcased at the Toronto Film Festival and made Buzz's list of January's must-see movies. Paul's in the market of working with extremely good-looking castmates as he preps to start filming The Ides of March this Spring with Hollywood's hottest bachelors Ryan Gosling and George Clooney. Not to be outdone by Paul, Scott also recently signed on to another handsome ensemble, joining Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams on their upcoming drama, The Vow.

It was a good weekend of manjoyment in Canada, with a handful of Hollywood's hottest touching down to promote movie projects at the Toronto Film Festival. Josh Hartnett had a busy Saturday at the premiere of his Bunraku before moving on with his cast to the afterparty. Scott Speedman looked good in his denim shirt with his costars like Minnie Driver at a press conference for Barney's Version. Matt Damon, meanwhile, kept the good times going at a screening of Hereafter with Bryce Dallas Howard and their director, Clint Eastwood. Freida Pinto and Dev Patel upped the festival's cute factor by making an adorable and PDA-filled cameo supporting her new Woody Allen project, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.

Hayden Christensen and Thandie Newton stuck together for their red carpet debut of Vanishing on 7th Street. Ryan Reynolds arrived late in the afternoon to prep for his upcoming press duties on behalf of Buried. The cinema event is in full swing following a star-studded few days, in which the highlight was Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's appearance to show off his The Town - stay tuned for lots more news and photos as TIFF continues!

Based on the novel by Mordecai Richler, the story centers around the thrice-married Barney Panofsky (Giamatti) and his wives (most notably Twilight's Rachelle Lefevre and a funny Minnie Driver). The Strangers: Slow and Steady Gets the Scare

The Strangers director Bryan Bertino takes a simple storyline based in reality ("inspired," in fact, by true events) and tells it with such careful realism that our own basic human terror, usually lying dormant within us, rises inescapably to the surface. He has figured out a perfectly lethal recipe for horror movie success: take a large dose of realism, add a few scary things and then patiently wait for the fear to rise.

This movie is a great example of a horror/suspense film done well. We human beings already have so many fears just lying inside us, waiting to be tapped into. We don't need two hours of cheap jump scares (looking at you, Prom Night) or gratuitous, nauseating gore. We just have to witness very simple, normal things that could happen to plant a tiny seed of fear in the backs of our minds. Then, all it takes is a patient, detail-oriented filmmaker to nurture that seed until it grows into all-consuming terror.

To see the basic plotline and how it somehow so thoroughly scared the living daylights out of me,

As far as the movie's plot points go, I really mean it when I use terms like "basic" and "simple." A couple, James (Scott Speedman, who makes me miss Felicity so much!) and Kristen (Liv Tyler) drive to a remote cabin to spend the evening where some strangers come by and terrorize them. That's it. Really. However, the simplicity of the story doesn't mean it's boring. A good chunk of the beginning of the film is devoted to the romantic troubles the couple is experiencing (one of them wants to get married, the other does not, they find themselves at a heartbreaking crossroads). Even though I knew that they were setting us up to be spooked and I was trying to brace myself for it, I found myself relaxing into the drama of their story: the heartache, the sweetness, the helplessness. . . and then bam! Girl with scary wispy voice shows up on doorstep and from there a slow unspooling of eerie happenings begins.

And these eerie happenings are so. Very. Simple. Aggressive pounding on the front door. A flash of someone's creepy masked face. A discordant bit of old timey country music skipping on the record player. Shaky close-ups of a broken champagne flute. A shadow looming longer and longer along the wall. In this day and age, these things almost seem like relics of an old-fashioned brand of storytelling, but the thing is, maybe we need to go back to those old times. The tried and true is often the most effective, and The Strangers is a perfect example of this. The ending of the film is sickeningly sad and gross, but as far as suspense goes, everything leading up to the climactic ending is almost flawlessly frightening.

I'm currently working on my full review of The Strangers, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman but I'll go ahead and tell you now: it's so scary! I'm posting the full trailer here today to get you scary movie fans pumped up, and to remind you that there are some cool, smaller movies making their way into theaters nowadays besides the big blockbusters.

But OMG I cannot even watch this trailer! That's how not recovered I am from the screening. Anyway, after the jump check out the trailer and tell me: does this look terrifying? Or tame?

Things Are Heating Up in Cannes With Lindsay and Kate

Dolce and Gabbana threw a party at Baoli, Port Canto during the Cannes Film Festival this weekend, and things must have gotten hotter because the dresses keep getting shorter. Lindsay Lohan looked spectacular in a short mini green dress and a beautiful sparkler on her finger. Hmmm, could it be a gift from one of her many suitors? Also looking happier than ever was Kate Hudson in her LWD. No sign of Lance but apparently he was there, and the new couple were spotted dancing and kissing. Cannes juror Natalie Portman continued to look cute, and we still have a soft spot for Scott Speedman, who posed with his co-star Rachel Blanchard.

Michelle Williams Shows Her Adoration

Michelle herself isn't in the movie, but maybe she just wanted to get a little warm up before the premiere of her Synecdoche, New York at the festival tonight.

Celebs Celebrate Motorola

Some of Hollywood's cell phone loving celebs came out last night to celebrate the 9th anniversary of Motorola in LA. Kelly Clarkson provided the entertainment as she took the stage in her fab juicy dress and Brittany Murphy squeezed into some serious leather boots. Scott Speedman looked scruffy cute next to clean-cut Justin Long while Audrina Patridge showed off her glowing tan in her LWD. Apparently, the Hills star is back on the market after dumping Justin Bobby for making out with another girl in front of her. We always had a feeling that he wasn't trustworthy, but luckily it looks like she's already got a new man to distract her.

First Look: Liv Tyler in The Strangers

Apparently this trailer is R-rated, though I can't say I see much of anything too racy in it. The preview for the horror film The Strangers, does get pretty scary toward the end, though, and I like both her and Scott Speedman, so I'll be interested to see this film when it comes out in October.

The plot outline is pretty basic: "A young couple cozied up in a vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants." Sometimes simpler is better, though, especially when it comes to horror flicks. Looks like this will make a great movie choice come Halloween - especially since I have little interest in seeing the fourth Saw movie, also opening in October.
