Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kellan, and More Show Their NBA All-Star Spirit

Celebrities came out in full force for the NBA All-Star weekend at the Staples Center in LA. Things kicked off on Friday night with Modern Family's Ty Burrell and Oscar performer Zachary Levi in the stands for the rookie challenge. Ty was back with his wife, Holly, to check out Saturday night's event, which also brought out Mark Wahlberg and his sons Michael and Brendan. John Legend and his girlfriend, Chrissy Teigen, were also on hand to watch the evening's performance by Cee-Lo Green, and they kept the fun going at an afterparty thrown by LeBron James and Jay-Z. There were even more famous faces in the crowd at Sunday's big game with Jay-Z and Beyoncé Knowles nabbing floor seats alongside Justin Bieber. Jay and B even shared some sweet PDA as the Western conference narrowly defeated the East. John apparently held things up when he spilled his drink on the court, though the show went on when birthday girl Rihanna, Drake, and Kanye West took center stage during halftime for a sexy medley. Kellan Lutz made an appearance during a break from filming Breaking Dawn, and Glee's Jenna Ushkowitz rocked her Lakers jersey to support the West Coast team. Get Him to the Greek: Sex, Drugs, Rock. . . and Laughs

I've been admittedly on the fence about my feelings toward Russell Brand, but his hilarious performance in Get Him to the Greek has me firmly on board. Reprising his Forgetting Sarah Marshall role as Aldous Snow, Brand delivers the perfect parody of a rock star who's lost his way - both literally and figuratively. His Snow is manipulative, arrogant, and often jaw-droppingly offensive, but you still fall in love with him somewhere between the start of the adventure in England and the end in LA.

The film, which is directed by Sarah Marshall's Nicholas Stoller, kicks off with a look at the current state of Snow's career. After a successful run and seven years of sobriety, he hits rock bottom with the album "African Child" - a less-than-delicate look at the current state of affairs overseas. When Snow's turn as a self-proclaimed "African White Space Christ" causes an uproar and severe media backlash, he falls off the wagon and goes into hiding. Enter Aaron (Jonah Hill), a longtime fan of Aldous's who looks to give both his own sinking record company and Snow a boost with a special concert at LA's Greek theater. The problem, of course, is getting Snow from his home in England to LA in one piece.

The heart of the film can be found in Hill and Brand's near-perfect comedic chemistry. Aldous keeps Aaron on his toes in every sense, from derailing their travel plans to treating Aaron as his personal servant, and the back-and-forth is reflected in their banter as well. Both actors have mastered the art of delivering deadpan one-liners, and Snow's off-the-cuff British humor is well balanced with Aaron's blend of snark and awkwardly corny jokes.

Though the film's focus is on Brand and Hill, they've got outside support in spades. Sean "Diddy" Combs steals his fair share of scenes as Aaron's domineering boss Sergio, and Elisabeth Moss breaks way out of her Mad Men role as the girlfriend who learns of Aaron's drug-addled misadventures through various pocket calls from his phone. Their movie is also littered with celebrity cameos, but none of the supporting players hold a candle to Rose Byrne's performance as Jackie Q, Snow's sassy model/musician girlfriend who's just as ridiculous as he is. Byrne's Jackie is the perfect female counterpart, and I found myself wishing I could see more of her oversexed, over-the-top music videos.

My biggest grievance with the film is that it starts to meander a bit in the middle. There's so much in-your-face partying going on that it feels a bit like the writers ran out of material and had to grasp at straws to keep pushing the envelope to unnecessary levels. Luckily, it finds its way back for an ending that left me feeling satisfied, but not before a few scenes that had me scratching me head (and wishing I could unsee a few things).

Get Him to the Greek is not a perfect comedy, but it is the perfect Summer kickoff comedy - and the one I'll expect we'll be hearing about (and quoting) until Christmas.

Diddy's Going All Hollywood on Us

Diddy smiled big next to his shiny new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday with the support of his whole brood all decked in white. He didn't take the honor lightly and even asked his fans to come out to the ceremony via video. He kept the party going all night long at billionaire Ron Burkle's estate. Apparently the entrepreneur is planning on working on his acting career so he'll be spending more time on the west coast. Diddy declared this about his star, "It's also like my coming-out party here in Hollywood. I don't have nothing to hide about that. If I'm going to come someplace, I'm going to make some noise, and you're going to know I'm here."

Brooklyn Rapper Chosen to Play Notorious B.I.G. in Biopic

Last summer I posted about the interesting way filmmakers were casting the Notorious B.I.G. biopic: via Internet submissions. Apparently the folks behind the project felt that Hollywood lacked good choices for the role, and opened up auditions to the world wide web in the hopes of finding someone more authentic than a big-name star. At first I thought this might be more of a publicity stunt than a sincere search for the right fit to portray Biggie, but through this process they actually appear to have found their man.

The film's producers and Biggie's mother Voletta Wallace conducted an exhaustive search auditioning thousands of men before finally choosing Brooklyn rapper Jamal 'Gravy' Woolard for the role. Wallace is thrilled with the results, and recently stated:

Finding B.I.G. was a task in itself, and I'm honored that so many young men came out to audition for the role . . . However, it was Jamal's charming personality, warm spirit, wonderful sense of humor and beautiful smile that won my heart. He is a talented and charismatic actor, and I am excited that he will bring Christopher's character to the big screen.

Set for release in January 2009, the movie will also star Angela Bassett as Biggie's mother, Derek Luke as Sean Combs, and Anthony Mackie as Tupac Shakur. Though there seems to be a lot of care involved in doing justice to Biggie's life story, there have been early reports of weaknesses in the script. Let's hope some strong direction and a newcomer's fresh energy will make this a film to remember.

First Look: ABC's A Raisin in the Sun

Lorraine Hansberry's 1959 play A Raisin in the Sun is already a true theater classic: It was the first play written by an African American woman to be performed on Broadway, and the original cast - including Sidney Poitier and current Oscar nominee Ruby Dee - was recognized with four Tony Awards. More than 40 years later, a 2004 revival starring Sean Combs, Phylicia Rashad, and Audra McDonald took home two Tony awards of its own.

Now, the majority of the Broadway cast has reunited for a television adaptation for ABC, which will air next Monday, Feb. 25. The movie has already screened at Sundance to positive reviews, and I'm eager to check it out for myself.

The play focuses on a family struggling to make a life for themselves in Chicago in the 1950s. Matriarch Lena Younger (Rashad) starts the story in motion, using money from her late husband's life insurance check to purchase a house in an all-white neighborhood - a move that isn't received well by their new neighbors. Meanwhile, the rest of the money ends up in the hands of Lena's son Walter (Combs), but instead of protecting and saving it to send his sister to medical school, he ends up tied up in a scam that could destroy the family's ambitions. It's a powerful story, and I'm curious to see how it translates to the small screen. To check out a preview, just

Diddy and His Costars Bring Their Raisin Into The Sun

I owe Diddy an apology. I've been giving him some flack over the past couple of days that he is only at Sundance to promote his vodka, though he is in fact in town to premiere a pretty big film at the festival, the newest version of A Raisin in the Sun, alongside Phylicia Rashad, John Stamos, and Audra McDonald. To be fair, he did spend a good amount of time with that vodka of his. Heh. While at the festival, he talked about being involved in such an important project. He said:

On his first lead movie role: "This a historical moment for me, my first starring role in a movie...Some of the audience is going to want to see did I do good or did I fall flat on my face?"
On the film: "Sometimes people come to a place and don't expect to get the message...This generation, they come for entertainment ... then they realize, 'oh man, this movie is really touching. It's making me really appreciate my family."'
On moving from Broadway to film:"Broadway truly prepared me. It made me really go for it...I was like, I came here to get with it and tell a story. I have a long way to go ... but I'm swimming, baby."

Luckily for us, their Raisin in the Sun will also premiere February 25 on ABC, so we'll all get to see Diddy's acting chops. Until then, I'm sure he shared a few of his party pointers with his costars to celebrate their film.
