History is marked with talented black athletes who asserted their civil rights and defied segregation to play professionally. To celebrate Black History Month, here is a look at noteworthy black female athletes who have risen to the top and the women who helped pave their way.

Heidi Klum Models Bold Bangles and Bright Versace at the HALO Awards

Heidi Klum arrived at the Hollywood Palladium in LA last night decked out in an armful of bangles from her Wildlife collection and a graphic Versace dress. She was one of the stars on hand for Nickelodeon's TeenNick HALO Awards. Nick Cannon stepped out solo to host the event while his lovely wife, Mariah Carey, and "dem babies," twins Moroccan and Monroe Cannon, cheered him on via Twitter. True Blood heartthrob Stephen Moyer also came out to support the "Helping and Leading Others" initiative, which recognizes teens who are making a difference in their communities.

Heidi's week of big events is just getting started. She's hosting two Halloween parties this weekend, one in Las Vegas and the other in NYC. In years past, she's kept her intricate outfits top secret. However, yesterday Heidi strayed from tradition and gave fans a sneak peek of her elaborate monkey and skeleton costumes.

Matthew and Ben Get Support From Their Leading Ladies at Tower Heist's Premiere

Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, and Matthew Broderick got together last night for the NYC premiere of their comedy caper Tower Heist. Sarah Jessica Parker, wearing a tiered Narciso Rodriguez dress and Manolo Blahnik stilettos, was out late on a school night with her 8-year-old James Wilkie to show their love and support to Matthew. Ben cozied up to his lovely wife, Christine Taylor, on the red carpet while costars Eddie, Casey Affleck, Gabourey Sidibe, and Tea Leoni posed for photos before heading into the Ziegfeld Theatre. The screening brought out a variety of famous faces like Serena Williams, Donald Trump, Doutzen Kroes, and Diddy. Director Brett Ratner moved the afterparty to Stone Rose Lounge where he and the stars of the film partied late into the night alongside Jason Sudeikis and Mary-Kate Olsen.

Serena Williams Enjoys Bikini Time and Cocktails on Miami Beach

Serena Williams stripped off her tank top and denim shorts to enjoy a bikini beach afternoon with friends in Miami yesterday. The group enjoyed cocktails and posed with fans as they basked in the sun, and Serena tweeted that Chris Bosh's fiancée, Adrienne, almost made her cry during the girls' day and night out. Serena is currently staying off the courts as she recovers from her February surgery. Still, she remains the only male or female American tennis player ranked in the top 10 of the sport, which is certainly something to be proud of.
