Tribeca Takeaway: Take This Waltz

The Tribeca Film Festival is in full swing in New York City, and Take This Waltz was among the many we were excited to check out. The film stars indie staple Michelle Williams as a woman whose magnetic pull to a neighbor makes her question whether she is truly happy in her marriage.

Who's behind it? The film was written, produced, and directed by Sarah Polley, whose most recent directorial work is 2006's Away From Her. Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby, and Sarah Silverman star.
What's it about? Margot (Williams) has been happily married to Lou (Rogen) for the past five years. They tell one another they love each other so much that they detail ways in which they'd kill the other (usually with kitchen appliances), and they're supremely intimate in every way except on a sexual level. Despite their evident love, the couple isn't communicating on a very basic level, making Margot feel as though something is missing. In a series of chance encounters abroad, she ends up meeting Daniel (Kirby), who is mysterious, dark, handsome, and everything her professional chicken chef husband is not. The two have an unexplainable magnetic pull to one another, and when they return to their respective homes, they realize they're neighbors. It's unlikely, but hey, it's fate. Margot and Daniel begin spending time together, but they're plagued by Margot's existing, yet failing, connection to her husband.

Take This Waltz Trailer: Michelle Williams Is Torn Between Two Lovers

The trailer for Take This Waltz has "precious indie movie" written all over it, right down to the fact that the preview gives us little in the way of plot. Instead, we glean what we can from watching Michelle Williams lead a comfortable married life with Seth Rogen, until she's enticed by a handsome new guy (played by Luke Kirby).

Though I wish this preview had more dialogue, I'm already looking forward to seeing Seth Rogen step outside his comfort zone with some deeper material than what he's usually given, and I can't wait to see him and Williams as an onscreen couple. Rooney Mara Toasts Sony's Nominations With Sacha, Jodie, and Jonah

Sony Pictures also played host to a Golden Globes bash last night! The stars from the company's many films got together to raise their glasses in honor of their many nominees. Rooney Mara of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo had been nominated for best actress in a drama, an honor that ultimately went to The Iron Lady's Meryl Streep. She nonetheless mingled with Sony execs and sipped champagne at the bash in her dark Nina Ricci gown. Moneyball's best supporting actor contender Jonah Hill said hello to Sacha Baron Cohen, who was out supporting Hugo and its best director winner Martin Scorsese. A Dangerous Method best supporting actor nom Viggo Mortensen was in a great mood while talking about Spanish soccer, and Jodie Foster hung out with her sons Christopher and Charlie.

Emma, Keira, and Michael Step Out For a Star-Studded National Board of Review Gala

George Clooney attended the National Board of Review Awards gala with girlfriend Stacy Keibler last night at NYC's Cipriani 42nd Street. Many other stars went out for the Big Apple event as well, include a Nina Ricci-wearing Keira Knightley and Emma Stone in J. Mendel.

George was on hand to pick up a best actor statue for The Descendants, and his leading lady, a L'Wren Scott-clad Shailene Woodley took home best supporting actress. We Need to Talk About Kevin's Tilda Swinton wore Haider Ackermann to accept best actress, and Emma Stone joined costars Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, and Viola Davis onstage to collect their best ensemble film statue for The Help. Hugo, meanwhile, was crowned best movie. Michael Fassbender, who looked great in his suit, won a special spotlight award for the many films he starred in last year.

Seth Rogen is a married man! The actor and his fiancée, Lauren Miller, tied the knot at Kunde Estate in Sonoma on Saturday in front of a star-studded group of guests. Seth and Lauren's family and friends, including Judd Apatow and wife Leslie Mann, Paul Rudd, Adam Sandler, Craig Robinson from The Office, and Jonah Hill, all came out to support the couple on their big day. After the ceremony, Seth and Lauren drove off in a vintage white convertible before joining the guests at the reception. Seth and Lauren got engaged in December of 2010 and have been together since 2004. Seth's wedding weekend coincided with the release of his new movie 50/50, which got strong reviews and came in fourth place at the box office. Seth was a producer on the movie; though, Saturday was all about an even bigger project - his new marriage. Congrats to the happy couple!

50/50: It's OK to Laugh

50/50 doesn't really deserve the label "cancer comedy," because it's so much more than that. The film finds humor in the realities of an ordeal that's often treated with kid gloves on screen, but how ever many laughs 50/50 finds (and there are many), the script never mocks the subject matter. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Adam, a guy in his late 20s who's otherwise healthy until the day he finds out he has a rare form of cancer and a 50 percent chance of survival. His best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) supports him and provides a bit of comic relief after Adam is diagnosed and then undergoes chemotherapy and surgery.

Rogen is one of the producers, but he has a more personal stake in the film - his friend Will Reiser wrote the screenplay based on his own experience with cancer several years ago. The end product is a film that's very honest, with elements that are funny, heartfelt, and sometimes scary. To find out why I loved 50/50, just keep reading.
