Emma, Blake, Thandie, and Alexa Step Out in Style For Elle

Award season continued last night at London's Elle Style Awards. It was another star-studded turnout, after last year's celebration attracted the likes of Kristen Stewart and Carey Mulligan. Rumored new face of Lancôme Emma Watson donned a pale pink Hakaan dress to accept the top honor for Style Icon, just one day after she wore another fabulous gown, a Valentino, to the BAFTAs. Emma accepted her statue from designer Vivienne Westwood and said from the stage, "It feels amazing. Fashion is something that I love. I try not to think about it too much. I try and block all that off and I just do what I love and just have fun with it. I’ve definitely been feeling the pressure a bit more recently but it’s just fun for me." Joining Emma were other fashionable ladies like an Emilio Pucci-clad Blake Lively, who traveled from NYC to pick up the Best TV Star statue during a break from filming Gossip Girl. A fresh from Fashion Week Alexa Chung looked ladylike in Yves St. Laurent on her way inside, while Thandie Newton arrived in a printed purple Louis Vuitton.

Victoria Beckham Shows Some Leg at the British Fashion Awards

Victoria Beckham heated up a chilly London evening in a sexy, slit-to-there gown of her own design at this evening's British Fashion Awards. Stylish stars including Alexa Chung, Naomi Campbell, and Emma Roberts also stepped out for the hot red carpet. Victoria was a nominee for the Designer Brand Award, though Mulberry ultimately took home the honor - find the full list of winners on FabSugar UK. Victoria made the trip from LAX to Heathrow on Sunday, following David's stint in Europe last week, during which he helped Prince William publicize England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup. The sexy couple were able to spend last weekend together, since David returned to California on Friday in time to take over care of their boys while she is off on her latest adventure.

For Colored Girls: A Hot, Clichéd Mess

There have been rumblings that For Colored Girls is director Tyler Perry's best work. If that's true, then I fear for what that says about his career as a filmmaker. The movie is based on the Broadway play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, which first hit the stage in 1975. Perry's adaptation is a sloppy effort, as he has foregone any sort of updating or modernization of the 35-year-old production, choosing instead to exploit timeworn clichés to portray the dramatic lives of several African American women living in New York City.

It's a shame, because Perry has many fine actresses in his cast, like Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Kerry Washington, and Whoopi Goldberg. The movie follows them over the course of a few days, as each character endures a horrific ordeal (think rape, abortion, and physical abuse). Perry is going for a powerful, extravagantly theatrical feeling, but each story plays out like an after-school special.

read more. The individual skills of each actress are underutilized, except for perhaps Newton, who plays a woman so emotionally abused that she turns to promiscuity to avoid real relationships. The character is so familiar it's a stereotype, and the other personalities are even more overused. Janet Jackson plays a successful magazine editor, whose clothing, manner, and dialogue are ripped straight from The Devil Wears Prada's Miranda Priestly. Even the storytelling devices are laughably familiar; for instance, to show that a teen character is pregnant, she suddenly vomits during a dance practice. Subtle. When Perry isn't using contrived tactics to move the plot forward, he crosses lines with gratuitous violence. There's one scene so extreme (made harder to watch by the tactless way it's filmed) that I wanted to walk out of the theater. Perry seems like he's striving to make a film as weighty as Precious, but he only gets close to the realm of soap opera. It's clear that the women are supposed to be perceived as warriors, but they're really just victims. Rather than find a way to show their strength, the characters are simply put in peril. What's more, the danger they face is almost exclusively at the hands of men, who are wholly portrayed as monsters. It's another kind of stereotyping, and potentially more offensive than the way the female characters are depicted. For Colored Girls completely misses the point it's trying to make, and only succeeds in being a caricature of other, better films that have tackled the same subject matter.

Thandie Newton's Nearly Bare Face Is Super Pretty

At the New York premiere of For Colored Girls last night, Thandie Newton stood out from the other lovely ladies on the red carpet by going extremely subtle with her makeup. It was surprising for a gala event, but I loved the palette, and it's easy to replicate. Start out with cream black eyeliner like Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner ($14) along your upper lash lines, then follow with a soft peach blush like Paul & Joe Face Color in Peach Melba ($24), and finish up with a nude pink lipstick like Clarins Joli Rouge Lipstick in Lilac Pink ($24) or
Revlon ColorBurst Lipstick in Ruby Nude ($6).

Matt, Josh, and Ryan Bring Their Good Looks North of the Border For the Toronto Film Festival

It was a good weekend of manjoyment in Canada, with a handful of Hollywood's hottest touching down to promote movie projects at the Toronto Film Festival. Josh Hartnett had a busy Saturday at the premiere of his Bunraku before moving on with his cast to the afterparty. Scott Speedman looked good in his denim shirt with his costars like Minnie Driver at a press conference for Barney's Version. Matt Damon, meanwhile, kept the good times going at a screening of Hereafter with Bryce Dallas Howard and their director, Clint Eastwood. Freida Pinto and Dev Patel upped the festival's cute factor by making an adorable and PDA-filled cameo supporting her new Woody Allen project, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.

Hayden Christensen and Thandie Newton stuck together for their red carpet debut of Vanishing on 7th Street. Ryan Reynolds arrived late in the afternoon to prep for his upcoming press duties on behalf of Buried. The cinema event is in full swing following a star-studded few days, in which the highlight was Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's appearance to show off his The Town - stay tuned for lots more news and photos as TIFF continues!
