Tim Allen Says That Last Man Standing is Like "A Flip-Flop" of Home Improvement

If you fawned over Jonathan Taylor Thomas on Home Improvement back in the 90s, then I've got some good news for you. No, JTT is not making his return, but his onscreen dad, Tim Allen, is taking on a new comedy in ABC's Last Man Standing. The show offers the same brand of Allen's dad humor, only this time he's got three daughters instead of three sons, and he works for a men's sporting goods catalog instead of on a show about tools. The jokes were copious when Allen was joined by his costars and showrunners at the TCA, as he talked about his new gig and why he wanted to do the same kind of show as Home Improvement.

Allen made it pretty clear that he's fully aware of the similarities between Last Man Standing and Home Improvement. He compared his craft to the way Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer make the same kinds of movies over and over again, and said that though he looked at some dramedies, none of them were of interest to him (well, except for Castle). He also noted that of what he was offered, "it was never the same show [as Home Improvement], and I didn't know why we wouldn't do a version of the same show."
Allen went on to say that what he really wanted to do was "flip-flop" Home Improvement, in replacing his three sons with three daughters. He said he "wanted to investigate what it would be like to be around four women who are intelligent, strong, fun and loving." And he later added, "It isn't rocket science what I'm doing. Instead of tools, it's sporting goods and guns and boats."
Executive producer Jack Burditt made it clear that the audience won't be hit over the head with the "what makes a man a man?" premise, even though it's largely featured in the pilot. Burditt said that at the heart of it, this is "just a family comedy" and that there will be lots of other themes introduced and explored.
One element that won't be woven in, though, is politics. Allen said, "My preference would be to limit that because we learned very quickly on the past show that it lasts longer if you're not talking about political current events. Sometimes it's enticing but if you get too timely then it doesn't last very long."
As for what Allen himself believes makes a man? He brought up a debate he had with Joy Behar when he stopped by her show, saying, "I really think men need stuff to do. You have to have hobbies and you should be able to fix stuff. My grandmother said there's nothing more attractive than a man busy doing something. Maybe it's traditional but I like women who know how to cook . . . the process of letting women taking care of you. It's either old school or it's misogynistic."

Britney Joins the Cast of Characters at the Toy Story 3 Premiere

Britney Spears had a mouth full of gum and put on a sparkly dress yesterday to attend the LA premiere of Toy Story 3. She posed with the film's stars like Woody and Buzz Lightyear, while nearby the actors who voice the characters like Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, and Michael Keaton stuck together. Brit brushed up on her Disney knowledge with a recent trip to their amusement park with her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, but it looks like her boys skipped out on the screening - they can, though, get a head start on the Summer blockbuster's fun with toys inspired by the movie. Brit was able to spend quality time with one of her main men this weekend, when she ran errands on Friday with Jason Trawick.

Movie Preview: Crazy on the Outside

I'm actually really curious about Tim Allen's directorial debut, the indie comedy Crazy on the Outside. It's not just the words "director" and "indie" appearing with Allen's name, it's the cast of actors he's assembled that I'm interested in.

Sigourney Weaver and J.K. Simmons play the siblings of Tommy, Allen's character, who has just been released from prison and is trying to settle back into the real world. Plenty of folks pop up to derail him, including Ray Liotta and Julie Bowen. If none of those actors are enticing enough, in saunters Big Love's Jeanne Tripplehorn as Tommy's parole officer and romantic foil. It looks kind of interesting, even if the plot of a guy trying to make good isn't anything new. There's at least one laugh out loud moment from Weaver, who I love seeing in comedic roles.

Britney Cleans Up, Steps Out With Jim and Jenny

Britney Spears slipped into a sexy LBD and hit the blue carpet with a smile on Saturday night at the Generation Rescue Event hosted by Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy. The pop star apparently sipped on red wine, looked happy and expressed interest in the information about autism Jim and Jenny presented through the night. Friday's big news about settling her custody dispute with Kevin - even though she now owes him $20,000 per month in child support - must have put Britney in a good enough mood to want to hit the town and hang out with some celebrity friends. It's not often that we get red carpet Miss Spears these days, but perhaps this is a sign that she's ready to get back out there and smile for all the cameras.

Wild Hogs = Weird Weekend at the Box Office

I know that it's a big-budget movie with lots of big-name actors that's spending a lot of money on TV ads, but really: Wild Hogs?!? Yes, the perplexing buddy-meets-biker movie with a "did I read that right?" cast - John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, Tim Allen, and William H. Macy - was No. 1 at the box office this weekend, bringing in $38 million in its first three days.

Zodiac, which I liked quite a lot, came in at No. 2. Since I basically ignored the very existence of Wild Hogs, I'm a bit startled that so many moviegoers - given a choice between this movie, 2007 Oscar winners, and even Black Snake Moan - a failed experiment but at least it's thought-provoking - thought, "Hey, that Wild Hogs movie looks pretty good."

Popwatch blogger Michael Slezak watched Wild Hogs so we don't have to, and it sounds truly woeful. In one scene, Tim Allen apparently chugs gravy and eats a stick of butter. Ew. Also, poor, poor Marisa Tomei. Let's watch the trailer again, then ponder: What, exactly, about this movie appeals to people?
