Train Wrecks of the Year

We asked you to vote for the biggest train wreck of 2006, and while Britney is currently in the lead, a select few of Hollywood's other young starlets definitely did a nice job of creating a bad reputation for themselves this year. We couldn't go more than a week without hearing about the latest from Britney, Lindsay, Nicole or Paris. Brit proved that being a mom doesn't mean you have to grow up, as she managed to look and act like a train wreck at various points throughout the year. LL created more drama than the OC with her car accidents, injuries and public outbursts (not to mention the rumors of cutting and alcoholism). We watched as Nicole withered away, partied, and earned herself a DUI. While Paris was arrested, caught smoking, name-calling and more. Let's hope these girls will get wiser in 2007. We understand being at events is part of the job but maybe each can become more selective and perhaps stay home a few more nights a week.

Lohan Spends Her Days Not Being A Train Wreck

What does a typical Wednesday look like for Lohan? Lots of shopping and loooots of wardrobe changes to keep the photos interesting for her fawning paparazzi, of course. She looks a little freaky in that skull shirt, no? Yesterday she was spotted whipping out the cash to pay for her purchases at American Rag before stepping it up a notch with a stop off at Hermes. She took a break from shopping for lunch, where she ran into DJ AM, fun fun. With that busy schedule, looks like she didn't have time to brush her hair. It's not all fun and games for LL these days - she is hard at work on her new album after all. With all this good behavior, it's no wonder she got almost no votes (no match for Britney) in our biggest trainwreck of 2007 poll.

Jive Wants to Look Away from Britney Train Wreck

Oh, Britney, Britney, Britney, will you ever learn...or pay a responsible amount of attention to your kids...or realize that your career suicide is something that should probably be addressed in a more substantial way than an online missive to your fans? Though the starlet (is she really a starlet anymore? What would you call her? Pop Idol on Hiatus?) is ending many of her nights at the recording studio, things may not be so happy over at Jive Records, the company set to release her comeback album. Page Six reports:

"Right now, she is trying to lay down some tracks, but no one is keen to move very quickly because there is the issue of how to market the album," an insider said. "Jive hasn't even picked producers for the album."

The record execs are also concerned about Britney's image. "If she doesn't clean up her act - and soon - it is going to be a problem. The public has grown really tired of her antics and despite her and [manager Larry Rudolph] promising she would change, she hasn't," continued our source. "She has lost her core fan base of teen girls."

She has also, it should be noted, lost her core fan base of horny men of all ages. Damn shame, too, because they were the ones buying the albums to drool over the photos in the liner notes (and secretly rock out to the songs alone in their cars).

Tara is a Total Train Wreck

Check out drunk Tara at Hyde this weekend. I love that she says she loves the paparazzi because they're always nice to her. But watch out, because she also says if they're ever not nice she'll "f***ing kick your ass." Click here to watch the clip and enjoy! TMZ reports:

Everyone's favorite walking disaster Tara Reid stopped to talk to the paparazzi outside of Hyde, explaining her love/hate relationship with the sometimes pesky group.

"Everyone hates you paparazzi but when you're nice, I don't hate you guys because you're nice to me," said a somewhat rambling Reid, "The day you're not nice I'm gonna f***ing kick your ass."

Tara also says why Tinseltown is the perfect place to live saying "You know what I love about Hollywood? You come here, live a dream and they actually give you the possibility of making them come true. That's what makes Hollywood perfect."

So much for that serious acting career of hers.

Pete Doherty is a Train Wreck

The sick addicted rock star was arrested just three hours after he was let off for other drug charges. The Sun reports:

ROCKER Pete Doherty has been arrested again on suspicion of new drugs offences.The Babyshambles frontman was held on suspicion of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply after cops stopped a car he was travelling in.

Doherty is in custody at an East London police station, along with the 21-year-old driver, who was also arrested.

The arrest, at 2.10pm today, came just three hours after the on-off lover of supermodel Kate Moss was spared jail on drugs charges by magistrates.

Seriously, get this man some help. It's really sad to keep hearing about how screwed up one man can be.

Lindsay and Samantha Are Back to Playing in LA

Lindsay and Samantha hit the town in LA last night, partying at Bardot with Mark Ronson. The girls weren't too shaken up by the aggressive fan that tried to get close to them the other night, taking advantage of one night in LA before heading to Houston for a gig tonight. After spending the year developing their relationship, LL and Samantha are on the right track to finish 2008 on a good note. Lindsay and her leggings may have landed on our worst street style poll, but the starlet has come a long way since being named one of the biggest train wrecks of 2007.

Ashlee Packs Grocery Baggage Far From Pete's Car

Pete Wentz, Ashlee Simpson's on-again/off-again friend with benefits, is notoriously loose-lipped and his interview in next week's Rolling Stone is no exception. While he and Ash were certainly never officially an item, they certainly seemed to spend some nights looking awfully cozy. I'm not sure how many more of those lucky trysts Pete is going to be on the receiving end of when she reads this most recent interview. Here's more:

"Maybe in a different universe, we'd be some hot couple, but not in this one." Wentz even goes as far as to take a veiled swipe at his close "friend," saying, "I'm attracted to creative people and train wrecks, and there's no shortage of that in Los Angeles."

Nice, Pete. So which one is Ashlee, a creative person, a train wreck, or a little bit of both? Maybe he was calling her a creative person? Sigh, he was totally calling her a train wreck, wasn't he?

Cameron Gets Deep in W Magazine

Cameron Diaz is on the cover of this month's W, and even though it's not as steamy as her last shoot with the magazine, she's leggy and gorgeous as ever. She and Ashton are promoting What Happens in Vegas - like on Saturday's SNL - but she found time to discuss heavy issues like her goals, happiness, and what she'd be doing if she wasn't an actor. Here's more:

This year's goal: “Just kind of taking more time getting to know myself. It sounds so corny that I can’t believe I even just said that, but, you know, there comes a time when you really have to get to know who you are. I’ve just been figuring out what interests me and spending time with people who are important to me and being present in my own life."
On admitting that she is happy: "I think sometimes people are afraid to say that they’re happy-they feel guilty about it. My life isn’t perfect. I have my struggles; everybody does. But I want to appreciate all of the amazing things in my life. People should have the right to be happy.”
On what she'd be doing if she didn't act: "I wanted to be a zoologist, to study the sociology of animals. But that’s pretty much what I do now anyway. I thought I’d be on the plains of Africa watching lions, but instead I’m in Hollywood watching train wrecks.”

On what she'll do next: “I envision a full year off, just living life and having fun. It’s the best thing."

Regardless of where Cameron is based, it seems like the ultimate California girl will have fun no matter what. Especially now that she has a possible new man in her life, who knows what's in the cards for Cameron.

Feeling Bad For Britney

Even Donald Trump and Stephen King have expressed their two cents about the world of Britney Spears. Donald wrote a note on his blog where he sounded like he is rooting for the old Britney we love to return just as much as we are. Stephen King wrote in his EW article that he understands her pain of having to deal with the paparazzi. He too feels bad for her yet for some weird reason he can't stop watching to see what this girl will do next just like all of us. Check out what Stephen wrote about her Dateline interview:

I felt bad for Poor Brit, who looked very young, very pregnant, sometimes very bewildered, and on several occasions pretty dumb. (Losing the gum might have helped.) I felt bad for feeling even a little concerned about her problems, when hundreds of thousands of people are starving in Darfur. I felt bad for Matt Lauer, who looked too smart for the job he was doing. And I felt bad for NBC, who that night gave half an hour to the world's problems at dinnertime and an hour to a slightly over-the-hill pop princess during prime time. Yet there I was. Hell, I even took notes.

I really want to have sympathy for Britney Spears. And I hate to give the impression that I'm picking on her. But not long ago Britney went on television with Matt Lauer on NBC's "Dateline," pleading for her privacy.

She admitted that she was an emotional wreck but the interview ended up being an incredible train wreck. First, Britney looked terrible. Her skirt was too short. Her makeup was messy. When she opened her mouth, it only got worse. She blamed the paparazzi for her bad image. She didn't admit that she made a mistake by driving with her baby on her lap.

And even though she described her marriage to her husband as awesome, somehow Kevin never managed to show up for the interview. Now I have a problem criticizing Kevin because he goes around and tells people that Donald Trump is his hero. The fact is, it is a pretty strange relationship.

During that interview, Britney complained about all the media attention and tearfully begged to be left alone. I almost bought it.

Until I saw her posing nude - and very pregnant - on the cover of the most recent issue of Harper's Bazaar. She has absolutely nothing to promote - no new record, no movie, no book. So, to a lot of people, it sounds like the only possible thing she could be doing is trying to keep her name in the news.

Inside the magazine, the layout includes a photo of Britney in a backless evening gown carrying her son...and another shot of her lying down on a fur coat wearing nothing but a G-string.

Britney has seen better days. She performed four or five years ago at the Trump Taj Mahal and she was great. Now it seems as if everything's slipping away from her. Britney, don't let that happen. Don't let it slip away. Keep your head on straight.

Stephen King on Britney Spears -- The pop of king looks at the recent appearance of the popstar on ''Dateline'' by Stephen King

Let's get one thing straight, okay? In that strange, vulgar, brightly colored section of the popular culture known as Celebrity World, the paparazzi are the lowest form of human life. I have been touched by them only peripherally, and it's been years since I really engaged their flea-like attention, yet recalling their exuberant shouts - ''Hey, Stephen, look over here! Stephen, just one more! Hey, Stephen, where ya goin'?'' - is still enough to make my skin prickle with shame and fury. The intrusion is part of it, the sense of entitlement is more of it, but the constant bray of your first name is the worst of it. They use your first name the way the cops on The Shield do when they're interviewing child molesters.

So when Britney Spears finally broke down during her interview with Matt Lauer on the June 15 version of NBC's Dateline celebrity grope, I wasn't surprised that it was the paps who pushed her over the edge. When asked what she would say to them if she could talk to them as individuals - a ridiculous idea in itself, since when working the paparazzi travel in packs, like hyenas, and when alone they don't exist - Britney replied, ''[I'd tell them] You have babies at home.... You have to realize that we're people.... We just need privacy and we need our respect.''

Never going to happen. And surely Poor Brit, who turns the waterworks off just as quickly as she turns them on, knows this. She has never projected a tenth of Madonna's savoir faire, getting by on a kind of puffy cheerleader charm that isn't in the same league as the Material Girl's come-here-darling-and-let-me-eat-you-alive sensuality, but that doesn't make her stupid. She began setting off flashbulbs at the age of 17, in that oh-baby schoolgirl's outfit. Now she's stuck trying to explain pics of herself driving with her child in her lap and looking like Ms. Yuma Trailer Park of 2006. It's a little embarrassing, but hey, anyone who appears on national TV in a low-cut see-through purple maternity blouse can apparently deal with embarrassment.

And, like Stacy's Mom, Brit's got it goin' on. Let's review the highlights:

Asked about motherhood, she told Lauer, ''It's amazing!''

Asked about appearing on Will & Grace: ''Awesome! So hilarious!''

Asked about marriage to Kevin Federline, he of the coolly slanted little hats: ''Awesome! He's so simple! He's like a boy! His heart is...awesome!''

She also said Kevin is ''working very hard.'' (I'm wondering if that means he's the yard boy, because he's certainly not in this interview.)

Explaining why she was driving with her kid in her lap: ''We're country!''

Every now and then, intercut with the blouse-y, gum-chewing matron who spouts such platitudes as ''Accidents happen'' and ''Love conquers all,'' we glimpsed the light-footed pop princess with the gamine grin that was always her best feature. Even more briefly we saw the ugly paparazzi feeding frenzies that probably ensue every time Britney hits the street...and one image, almost as stark as a police crime-scene photo, of a red-eyed, red-nosed Britney holding her baby to her chest, seeming to ask the camera, Where am I? Who am I? How did I get here? Why are you looking at me?

The answers, in brief, are these: You are in public; you are a pop creation now entering the final third of your active performing career; you got here as a result of youth, publicity, and prurient interest. The answer to the last question is the most unpleasant. We are looking at you, Brit, because we cannot yet look away.

Ms. Spears has enjoyed a fantastically successful career; Matt Lauer was correct in pointing out that ''she's already made her mark in the music world.'' That mark, however, may be drawn in sand rather than concrete. Seven years ago ...Baby One More Time sold 10.5 million albums, and in 2000 Oops...I Did It Again sold 9.2 million. By 2003, however, In the Zone sold only 2.9 million. For most artists, 2.9 million is hardly an ''only,'' but for Brit it's still a drop of 7.6 million units.

Her continued visibility - and, hence, popularity - seems to hinge on the very press that has sliced her up again and again these last few years. The Harper's Bazaar (pregnant, no less!) cover girl obviously understands; during her interview with Lauer, she talked about her life almost exclusively in terms of how she had been depicted in the press, and the interview itself was clearly an attempt to redirect the spin.

In the end, this edition of Dateline was just an hour of feel-bad TV. I felt bad for Poor Brit, who looked very young, very pregnant, sometimes very bewildered, and on several occasions pretty dumb. (Losing the gum might have helped.) I felt bad for feeling even a little concerned about her problems, when hundreds of thousands of people are starving in Darfur.
