Katy Perry Gets Some SNL Comic Relief From Matt Damon

Katy Perry is set to host SNL tomorrow night, but today she was joined by Matt Damon, Val Kilmer, and Andy Samberg on the streets of NYC to film a skit. Katy kept her new haircut hidden under a brunette wig and put on her best smile for the camera. Katy joked about hosting SNL, saying, "I'm up for a challenge, for something new. I love to be challenged . . . I married Russell Brand." Matt's been the featured star on the late-night show in the past, but this time he's just stopping by for a digital short. He's been busy promoting his upcoming holiday release, We Bought a Zoo, and even stopped by The Late Show this week to chat with David Letterman. Matt's made a habit of doing his best Matthew McConaughey impressions during past visits to the talk show, and this time was no different. Damon lightheartedly channeled the other famous Matt after some coaxing from Dave.

Twixt Trailer: Val Kilmer Hangs With Edgar Allan Poe

The Twixt trailer is here, and while it gives us our first look at Francis Ford Coppola's latest film, the preview is just as mysterious as the creepy town where it is set. Val Kilmer stars as horror fiction writer Hal Baltimore, who passes through a tiny town where a mass murder occurred years before and where a new serial killer may be on the loose. Baltimore decides to investigate the murder as material for his new book and begins to unlock the murder mystery. He doesn't do it alone, though: he has help from his dreams, the local sheriff (Bruce Dern), ghosts, including that of a girl who simply goes by the name V (Elle Fanning), and writer Edgar Allan Poe. Oh, and did I mention the fact that the sheriff thinks murderous vampires are somehow involved?

As he begins to uncover the mystery behind the town, it looks as if Baltimore becomes a target of whatever insidious forces are at work. With its roving ghosts and vampires, the trailer reveals just enough to pique my curiosity without giving away too much. Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, and Will Forte Get Some SNL Backup at MacGruber

The cast of MacGruber traded in their khaki wardrobe for formal wear at last night's premiere in NYC. Ryan Phillippe looked right at home with all the Saturday Night Live cast members, including Andy Samberg and Bill Hader, who came out to support Will Forte and Kristen Wiig's sketch-to-movie project. It was the second red carpet of the week for the crew, who are also celebrating the end of another successful SNL season. While on the East Coast, Ryan got to fulfill another fun obligation - on Tuesday he traveled south to Philadelphia to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a game for his beloved Phillies! He revealed he was pretty nervous before the throw, but perhaps not quite as much as when getting ready for his embarrassing, partially nude scene in the film.

Bad Lieutenant: Good Cop Gone Nuts

Nicolas Cage has said, "There's a very fine line between Method actor and schizophrenic." In Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, he teeters that line maniacally, with an ever-increasing slur and crooked swagger. Cage plays Terence McDonagh, a detective in post-Katrina New Orleans investigating a drug-related murder and his personal threshold for cocaine and heroin.

The first news of Bad Lieutenant was puzzling: famously extreme director Werner Herzog re-imagining a 1992 cult movie, also called Bad Lieutenant, but shifting the action to New Orleans and casting Nic Cage in the Harvey Keitel role opposite his Ghost Rider costar Eva Mendes. Weird.

But in fact, Bad Lieutenant is Herzog's second surprisingly accessible movie in as many years, following 2007's Rescue Dawn. And Cage is brilliant in a role seemingly made for him, so

The noirish, pulpy, desperate, and often hilarious film opens with a good deed: McDonagh dives into a Katrina-flooded jail cell to save a prisoner's life, in the process injuring his back and subsequently getting hooked on Vicodin and then far harder drugs. As a degenerate cop in a washed-out city, Cage makes Denzel Washington's Training Day villain look like a Boy Scout. He slithers through the streets, confiscating drugs to snort with his prostitute girlfriend (Mendes), hooking up with a drug kingpin played by Alvin "Xzibit" Joiner, and fending off a rising tide of self-created trouble. "Being courteous is really getting in the way of my progress," he croaks before one of his more disturbing moral lapses. In post-Katrina New Orleans, Herzog has found the perfect setting. He never lets the city look pretty or even charmingly decayed, and he populates it with iguanas and alligators and snakes and fish. At every turn, McDonagh is confronted by cold-blooded animals, as he careens between the call of duty and the cold-blooded instinct of his addiction. It's impossible to ignore the reptilian symbolism, and the effect is perfectly bizarre. Despite its darkest moments, Bad Lieutenant is a remarkably good trip.

The Stars Come Out to Watch the Lakers Win

Many familiar faces were in the stands yesterday at the Staples Center in LA to see the Lakers beat the Rockets and earn their way to the Western conference finals. Loyal fan Kate Hudson brought Ryder along, joining other celebs like Russell Brand, Nicky Hilton and David Arquette. Adam Levine took a break from romancing Cameron Diaz to sit courtside next to Denzel Washington, who was getting eyed up by Mindy Kaling. Elsewhere, controversial pals Eddie Cibrian and LeAnn Rimes had an awkward run-in at the bar. The Lakers win means more star-studded front rows as they take on the Denver Nuggets.
