Penelope Wins Another One for Volver

Penelope was noticeably missing last night at the SAG Awards, and with good reason. She was in Spain for the Goya Awards which is like their Oscars. Penelope won best actress for her fabulous performance in Volver, and the film won best picture. When accepting the best actress award, Penelope said, "This award is very important, very special for me. I am going to try not to cry because I'm a disaster, and these 30 seconds are not going to be enough."

Penelope Prepares for Gold

Penelope got in a great dance workout in West Hollywood this weekend. Besides keeping fit, she's getting rave reviews for her performance in Volver. Even her ex Matthew McConaughey thinks she deserves an Oscar. She's already gotten a European Film Award for best actress and she's up for a Golden Globe. No wonder she wants to look her best and stay fit... this could be her lucky Oscar year as well.

Penelope Gives Props to her Pal Pedro

We've been hearing great things about Penelope's new (even though she seems to have been promoting it for years now) movie Volver. She has been generating Oscar buzz and has now won the award for Best Actress at the 2006 European Film Awards. In her acceptance speech, a misty-eyed Penelope dedicated her award to Pedro Almodovar, the director of Volver and her personal mentor. Here's more:

[Penelope], whose feisty performance as Raimunda in the dark comedy is garnering Oscar buzz, picked up the Best Actress title at the European Film Awards in Warsaw. Wearing a glittering gold gown, the star held back tears as she talked about working with her mentor.

"Pedro, I love you so much," she said. "Thank you for believing in me. You're changing not only my career, but a lot of things in my life."

Penelope Terrified by Volver

Penelope may have already been in 35 movies, but that didn't stop her from breaking down before she started shooting Volver. What got so Penelope down? Here's more:

''The day before we started shooting, I was crying in my bed from terror. The night before, I called all my family, just to cry with somebody on the phone. And they were saying, 'How can you be scared? You've done 35 movies!' I said, 'This is different.' This is the most complex, emotionally demanding character I've played. I knew the responsibility Pedro [Almodóvar , Volver's writer-director] was giving me, and I didn't want to disappoint him.''

Looks like she pulled it together because the film has received great buzz and recognition internationally. It comes out in the states this November. Penelope Premieres Volver in NY

Penelope has been premiering Volver for what seems like years all around the world and now the film has made it to NYC. Pretty Penelope looked fabulous and is receiving rave reviews for her role in Volver. Still no confirmation from Penelope on whether she is or isn't dating Orlando, but we do know he was no where to be found as she flashed her smile to the cameras.

The National Board of Review Awards

The People's Choice Awards weren't the only big event last night. The National Board Of Review Awards Gala took place in NYC at Cipriani. Jennifer Hudson added one more award to her list winning its breakthrough performance award along with Ryan Gosling for Half Nelson's crackhead teacher. Penelope Cruz was on hand to present the foreign-film award for Volver and said about working with Pedro Almodovar, "It's too perfect. Sometimes it's scary. We're very good friends." SJP was at the event as well looking simply stunning.

Penelope and D&G Do Good

The lovely ladies of Hollywood came out to support a good cause last night with D&G and Penelope Cruz. Not only is Penelope up for a Golden Globe, but she has partnered up with the fabulous brand to create an online auction benefiting The Art of Elysium. She hosted the event at the Chateau Marmont, so no wonder young Hollywood was eager to attend. The event brought out LL, the Olsens, Mischa, Jessica, Eva and more to check out Penelope's stunning D&G gowns which will be up for auction along with the original sketches until January 8th. Here's more:

Cruz was personally fitted for each of the pieces available for auction, including a 2006 pre-fall collection fitted black strapless chiffon gown with black polka dot detail and fishnet train she wore to The Bandidas premiere in Mexico City; a spring 2006 runway finale white corseted eyelet gown with ruffle detail and train worn at the a Volver screening at the Palacio de la Musica Cinema in Madrid; a custom-made black-and-white floral print party dress she wore to the Volver premiere at the Cannes Film Festival; and a 2007 cruise collection light blue pleated chiffon gown with cap sleeves she donned for the Berlin premiere of Volver.

The Elle Style Awards

It really is award season when among the music and movie awards we can find time to recognize the fashionable ones as well. Last night in London, the Elle Style Awards took place and gave Madonna the top honor, the Style Icon Award (however she seems to be MIA from the event which is weird since it was co-hosted by her friends, H&M, hmmm). Pretty Penelope was also on hand to pick up the award for Best Film, Volver. Kate Moss was busy so Naomi Campbell scored the award for Best Model. She even had some thoughts to share on all the hype surrounding super skinny models. Here's more:

"You can't blame the industry for a psychological disease.
"It is a disease, like alcohol or drugs... and the industry is not to blame."

Naomi gave props to her modelling agency, IMG, for issuing guidelines to make sure models were well fed at the shows... She also praised the ban of girls under 16 from the catwalks in Milan.

When asked to name her own style icon, she chose her best friend and fellow model Kate Moss. "It's always Kate. I love my Kate," gushed Naomi.

Love that Naomi gave props to her friend Kate. I can also understand why she wants those under 16 to stay home. They are her competition after all - not that she can't land a job. Reese Brings Her Smile to the LAFCA Awards

The 32nd Annual Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards were last night and some of the most respected people in show biz were in attendance. You know an award show is a big deal when both Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood show up! It might have helped that their film Letters from Iwo Jima was voted Best Picture of the Year. Sacha Baron Cohen tied with Forest Whitaker for Best Actor! That's quite an accomplishment for such a newcomer! Reese wasn't up for any awards this year, but she's always a favorite among critics and us as well. She may be going through a divorce but you never would have known it by the way she was acting last night. Good to see her smiling once again!
