What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

In this week's new DVDs, we have plenty of big releases hitting shelves (just in time for those last-minute stocking stuffers!). Take a look at these three picks.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Gordon Gekko is back! Michael Douglas reprises his role as the moneygrubbing villain in this sequel to the iconic '80s film. This time around, Gekko enters the financial world once more following a long stint in jail. Shia LaBeouf costars as a naive Wall Street kid, who's engaged to Gekko's estranged daughter (Carey Mulligan) and becomes Gekko's mentee of sorts. The movie feels heavy-handed with its message of anti-greed - it's trying a little too hard to be timely - but LaBeouf and Mulligan's chemistry help keep it afloat. DVD extras include a featurette on Gordon Gekko and commentary from director Oliver Stone.

Emma Stone turns her charm on for this likeable high school spin on The Scarlet Letter. She stars as Olive Pendergast, a social misfit who gets way more attention than she bargained for when rumors spread that she's sleeping around. Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley costars as a love interest, and Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson step in as Olive's hilarious parents. DVD extras include an audio commentary and gag reel, but the Blu-ray offerings sound a little more enticing (a featurette on '80s movies!).

Angelina Jolie springs into action (and sports a black wig) as the titular character, a CIA agent who's accused of being a Russian spy. As she goes on the run to protect herself and clear her name, the movie turns into a never-ending sequence of fast-paced action scenes that are entertaining - even though the film becomes increasingly far-fetched. DVD extras include featurettes and an extended director's cut with an alternate ending.

Shia Does the Late Show Solo, His Wall Street 2 Premiere Alongside Carey, and an Afterparty With Mary-Kate and Ashley

The stars of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps gathered in NYC last night for their big premiere at the Ziegfeld Theater. Real-life loves Carey Mulligan and Shia LaBeouf walked the red carpet separately, but they caused a stir and screams from fans when they joined Josh Brolin, Susan Sarandon, and Michael Douglas for a group photo. Michael, who is in the middle of a battle against cancer, bravely turned out with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones to support his latest movie with director Oliver Stone. Shia lingered at the press line well after the screening began, seeming happy to shoulder the promotional duties for both himself and Michael. We had a minute to speak with Shia about his adventures in investing his own money, and he also spoke about working with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley on Transformers 3. He said, "She's great! This is going to be the best Transformers yet."

The gang moved on next to the afterparty at Cipriani on 42nd Street, where Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen broke from their fashion duties and preparations for their Paris show to toast Carey. Mary-Kate and Ashley also had some celebrating to do after finally selling the NYC apartment they've had on the market for five years. Shia had previously started the day by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange with Carey, then he went solo to keep the interviews coming at The Late Show. His chat with David Letterman airs on Friday, the same day their film hits theaters.

Shia LaBeouf and Carey Mulligan both suited up this morning to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange with their Money Never Sleeps costar Josh Brolin. Carey's been busy doing double promotional duty, after surprising fans last week at screenings of her other new movie Never Let Me Go. Shia, meanwhile, is in the Big Apple during another break from shooting Transformers 3. Carey and Shia's press responsibilities give the real-life couple a chance to spend time together. They spoke recently about the fun of working together, but we shouldn't get our hopes up about seeing PDA on the red carpet at tonight's premiere.

Carey Mulligan Is Famous Enough For Vogue, but Not Yet Glee

Carey Mulligan had the task of modeling dozens of couture looks at the shoot for her cover of October's Vogue. The Money Never Sleeps actress spoke to the magazine about her romance with her costar in the film, Shia LaBeouf, also touching on how she deals with fame and revealing a fondness for Glee. Carey found time to open up to the magazine despite her busy schedule, which includes an upcoming action film with Ryan Gosling and even a cameo on Belle and Sebastian's new track "Write About Love." Carey said:

On attending events with Shia LaBeouf: "Posing on the red carpet feels like you’re selling something that has nothing to do with you. If you do it with someone else, it’s like we’re saying, ‘Oh! We come as a pair! Would you like to buy both of us? We’re available for weddings and Bar Mitzvahs!”
On her fame: "I want to be in Glee, but I’m told I’m not famous enough to be a cameo yet.”
On her fitness routine: "I don’t want to look like an actress; I want to look like a person. Normal people don’t go to the gym six times a week . . .The thinnest I’ve ever been was after I had my appendix out, during the London run of The Seagull. I went down to 112 pounds and realized my brain doesn’t work when I’m that thin, so I can’t do my job. That’s why, when I came out here, I never had that whole Hollywood pressure thing. I never said I wanted to be a lead actress; I never said I wanted to be a film actress. This need to trump everyone bewilders me. I’m only 25. I’m not better than anyone. I just want to watch other people and learn to be good.”
On being recognized by fans: "I don’t want to be ‘known’ - I’m afraid of being a ‘personality.’ On a talk show, I feel I should just hold up a sign with the facts on it - and leave. It wouldn’t take more than a minute, and they’d have room for other guests. I want people to not recognize me, to think I’m a different actress, not remember me from what I did previously. If people have all those other pictures and stories associated with you, it’s added shit that means they have to work harder to believe you as a character.”

They managed to steal a sweet moment on Saturday while on their way to do additional press during the Cannes Film Festival, not letting the presence of Oliver Stone and Michael Douglas get in the way of their PDAs. Shia and Carey Glam Up the Cannes Red Carpet With Kate, Salma, Gael, and Diego

The cast of Money Never Sleeps wrapped up their afternoon press obligations and got black-tie ready for their big premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Lovebirds Carey Mulligan and Shia LaBeouf kept their distance on the red carpet, as he stuck with Michael Douglas and she posed with Josh Brolin. Despite recent speculation on the state of Josh's marriage, his wife, Diane Lane, was out this evening to support his latest big-screen endeavor.

Kate Beckinsale put on her latest show-stopping dress to take in Shia and Carey's movie as a juror. Salma Hayek was once again with husband Francois-Henri Pinault, this time clad in a gown matching the red carpet. BFFs Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, meanwhile, joined young actors Christopher and Gerardo Ruiz-Esparza for a screening of Abel. The project is Diego's directorial debut, while Gael served as producer.
