Penelope Cruz Kicks Off Her Morning With Her Movie Loves in Rome

Penelope Cruz joined her To Rome With Love director Woody Allen for their first photocall this morning. The duo popped up, appropriately, in Rome for their a.m. press duties alongside Penelope's costars Roberto Begnini, Alec Baldwin, and Jesse Eisenberg. Alec brought along his brand-new fiancé for the trip. She tweeted yesterday, "I love Roma." Jesse, meanwhile, showed off an interesting new look, with a layered, straightened hairdo - what do you think of Jesse's updated style? Penelope, Woody, and the gang have many more interview stops to make before the film is out here in the US on June 22. It's out first, though, in Italian theaters next Friday.

Woody Allen has hit home runs with European-set films Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Match Point, and Midnight in Paris, but can he do it again in Italy? We'll have our answer with To Rome With Love, which follows another star-studded cast as their love lives get a little more complicated in - you guessed it - Rome. This time, the lineup includes Jesse Eisenberg as a guy who's seduced by his girlfriend's friend (Ellen Page), Penelope Cruz as an Italian prostitute, and Allen himself wearing some pants that are pulled up very high.

As with Midnight in Paris, it's obvious that the setting is going to be a major character here, which is enough of a reason for me to be enticed by the film. My only gripe is that Page seems a bit miscast as the boyfriend-stealing sexpot, but I can definitely see her and Eisenberg as a match. Rachel McAdams changed into a semi-sheer Marchesa gown for the premiere of her new Woody Allen movie during the Cannes Film Festival this evening. She and boyfriend Michael Sheen were also together this morning at the Midnight in Paris photocall, though they seemed to show even more PDA at tonight's event - Michael sweetly helped with her dress as she ascended the stairs, and they huddled close while posing alongside costars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and the French actress Lea Seydoux. Rachel and Michael made the trip to France together in order to promote the comedy after a stay in LA doing press and hanging out with his 12-year-old daughter, Lily.

In recent years, Woody Allen's films have gotten to be a bit formulaic: he compiles an impeccable cast and drops them in an iconic city, then lets the characters' story lines intersect with each other. Sometimes the formula works (as in Vicky Cristina Barcelona), but other times we're not so lucky (as in You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger). After watching the trailer for his newest film, it's hard to predict where Midnight in Paris will fall on the spectrum.

The movie centers on Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams as an engaged couple visiting Paris. They start to grow apart when McAdams's character takes a liking to a stuffy American intellectual (Michael Sheen) that her fiancé doesn't quite approve of. Meanwhile, Wilson's character starts seeing his own side to the City of Love, but it's not clear what he's really doing on his late-night walks. There's no question that Wilson and McAdams have charm to spare, and Paris is the perfect backdrop for any film, but the trailer boasts only a few chuckles (and we barely glimpse the rest of the cast, which includes Marion Cotillard, Adrien Brody, and Kathy Bates). It's hard to think about the sunny Cannes Film Festival in the midst of frosty February, but Hollywood is always one step ahead of the season; it was announced today that Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which stars Rachel McAdams, Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, and Adrien Brody, will open the festival in May. The choice makes sense for obvious reasons: the film has been dubbed a "love letter to Paris," so what better pick to open the festivities in France?

The all-star cast has me excited for the film, and I'm hoping it will get rid of the bad taste in my mouth left by Allen's lackluster You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. But that's the great thing about the director; he churns out so many films that there's always a chance that an Oscar-winner could follow a dud. With over 40 movies under his belt, it seems that Allen has a little something for everyone on his résumé. So tell me - what's your favorite Woody Allen flick?

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger: Fools For Love

Boys will be boys, and as Woody Allen's latest You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger proves, they're suckers when it comes to matters of the heart - or well, libido.

As a rendition of "When You Wish Upon a Star" plays in the background, we meet Roy (Josh Brolin) and Alfie (Anthony Hopkins). Roy is a one-hit-wonder author who is unhappily married to Alfie's daughter, Sally (Naomi Watts), an art gallery assistant with babies on the brain. When the film begins, Alfie leaves his wife Helena (Gemma Jones) when his approaching mortality brings on the desire to reclaim his youth. He satisfies the urge with gym time and by trying to date women half his age. Delusional? Absolutely. But then again, so is every character in this wry comedy. They feed into the notion that the grass is greener on the other side, and this sense of entitlement makes them mostly unlikable (even though at times they are funny to watch).
