Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, and Blair Underwood were up bright and early this morning to announce the 2011 Golden Globe Awards nominations at the Beverly Hilton in LA. The hotel is the same spot where the show will take place on Sunday, Jan. 16, and it looks like we'll be seeing quite the star-studded affair this year! In the movie categories, the highly regarded The King's Speech leads the pack with seven nods, while The Fighter and The Social Network are close behind. Particularly surprising are the three categories where The Tourist shows up, including Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Best Actress for Angelina Jolie, and Best Actor for Johnny Depp, after being universally panned by critics. Johnny will be competing against himself in the acting category for his work in Alice in Wonderland. Other highlights for us include Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine and all the Black Swan nods. The TV side of things stayed fairly predictable, but check out the whole list. Pilot Scoop: The Event

I've been sharing my thoughts about the TV pilots coming at you this Fall, and today, I'd like to examine a new series that's big on hype (though its plot is still pretty hush-hush): NBC's The Event. I won't reveal too much - don't want to spoil anything! - but here are the basics.

What it's about: Told through multiple storylines, The Event follows the president of the United States, Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood), as he discovers a government cover-up that's been kept hidden by one of his advisers (Zeljko Ivanek). Meanwhile, a guy named Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) gets caught up in the secret when his fiancee-to-be (Sarah Roemer) mysteriously vanishes on a cruise.

Where it works: The pilot creates enough suspense to get you hooked, and it delivers at least one jaw-dropping twist. The ensemble of actors may be one of the best that the new Fall season has to offer (I get chills at just the sight of Ivanek), and Ritter proves he can handle the bulk of the series as the sympathetic everyman.

Where it doesn't: Will viewers be able to keep up? With multiple puzzle pieces and conspiracy theories to be had, this definitely requires dedication week to week due to its complexity. Some critics are already concerned that it will go the way of FlashForward and lose audience interest.

Am I hooked? Yes! The pilot ends with a juicy cliffhanger that's guaranteed to make me come back for more. I just question if I'm ready to subject my brain to yet another mind-bending series (it's still recuperating from Lost).

NBC Shows Off New Comedies and Dramas, Talks Emmys and Robert, and More

Week one of the Summer TCA wrapped up yesterday with presentations from NBC. The morning started with The Event starring Jason Ritter, who later confided in us that he actually doesn't even know what the event is. Next it was onto JJ Abram's Undercovers followed by a panel with the execs where Steve Carell's departure from The Office was a hot topic. Outsourced is their latest workplace comedy and the producers had to face lots of tough questions about the show and stereotypes. NBC saved the best for last with Jimmy Fallon talking Late Night and hosting the Emmys, which he said is going to be more interactive this year. He also said they do have some musical performance ideas for the show, joking, "it's a fun emotion to experience and you don't get to do it much, but we booked J Lo and Steven Tyler." The Event Casts Its Puzzling Shadow Over the NBC TCA

It's NBC day at the Summer TCA, and the network presented us with The Event, the action/thriller show that could take the place in your heart that Lost left behind. I already got to spotlight the new series, but the stars and execs revealed a bit more about the mysterious new drama.

The stars of the show - Jason Ritter, Blair Underwood, Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, and Zeljko Ivanek - admitted that they don't know much about the central mystery, aside from what their characters know. Ritter said they'd each been given a character dossier, which Innes said the actors were instructed not to share with each other. When asked outright if her character was from outer space, Innes didn't exactly answer, saying, "There are many secrets to be revealed about her." Indeed, executive producer Evan Katz said that "all of these characters have secrets," and the show will be about "peeling away those layers" of them.
There were lots of comparisons to other mystery-based series like Lost and Heroes, which brought up questions about how drawn out the questions are going to be. Katz implied that the audience won't get frustrated, and in the second episode, they are "very clearly answering the two largest open questions in the pilot." Creator Nick Wauters said that "you'll have more immediate answers to your questions but you still have to go on faith that we know what we're doing." Luckily, the showrunners said that they're "very cognizant of the audience's patience."

Fall TV Spotlight: The Event

I've already given you a glimpse of some of the Fall TV offerings, but it's time to hit on one of the season's buzziest newbies: The Event. It's a conspiracy theory series shrouded in mystery, so we don't know much, but let's go over what we do know:

Who's in it: Blair Underwood and Jason Ritter lead a cast that includes Sarah Roemer (you may recognize her from Disturbia) and TV vets Zeljko Ivanek (True Blood, Damages) and Laura Innes (ER).
What it's about: Ritter plays Sean, a newly engaged guy whose fiancée (Roemer) goes missing on vacation. As he tries to sort out her disappearance, he uncovers a government conspiracy that even the president (Underwood) didn't know about.
Why it caught my attention: It seems like every TV critic out there is talking about this one. The intrigue, the complex storyline, the prevalence of crashing airplanes in the promo - could this be TV's next Lost?
Show most likely to: Spawn watercooler talk.
