Ever wonder what goes on inside super stylist Patricia Field's bright red head? Lucky for us, she and I had a convo at the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge about her approach to styling, the Sex and the City movie, Cashmere Mafia and where she does the shopping for all the clothes we know and love. I got an exclusive interview with her at Fashion Week; she spoke with ease and gave Fab many minutes of her time. Thanks Patricia! On to the goods . . .

It looks like the wardrobe for the Sex and the City movie is more dramatic versus the show? Can you explain how you approached the movie wardrobe?

I approached the movie with the idea that five years has passed since we last saw these girls in action. And we know these girls quite well so you have to come through with a truthful concept. You can’t just be, “Oh, let’s do this and let’s do that” because our audience knows these girls very well and you’re not going to put something out there that they’re not going to believe. Five years have passed, what has happened to these women in five years? There are some changes but it’s not a new person.

So are they dressing older, would you say?

Some are, yes. And some are not. One might be dressing older, one might be dressing richer. There’s always a blend of old and new because they don’t change. Of course the pieces are different, but it’s the person behind the piece. She still wears a lot of vintage . . .

Tell me about mixing old and new, vintage and designer?

I love this dress (the white one with red flowers) for Carrie. it’s not designed by any name. It’s very much what all the designers are doing now - Lanvin, Balenciaga - the balloon. I found this gorgeous dress and I was like, “She needs to wear that dress.” She knows what the designers are doing today and she could wear the designer dress but not everybody can wear that dress because there’s only one.

Where did you find that dress?

In the collection of one of my assistants. There’s no label, it’s nobody major. That would be a dress you would find in a department store in the late ‘50s in the dress department, a nice department store, Lord & Taylor. But not designer designer - the dress department.

By the way Saks has a really good dress department up on the ninth floor.

What is it like working with these women? How much do you collaborate with them on their outfits

I always collaborate with them because the actor is creating this character and wearing these clothes so the collaboration is a huge part of the job.

So if they don’t feel comfortable in something? . . .

I would never insist on anybody wear something they were uncomfortable in. If you don’t feel that this is right for you, that’s not the way you achieve anything.

What are your favorite accessories and what is your signature Patricia Field touch?

My touch is mixing all the variables in a certain way - that’s my signature.

I’ve noticed you’ve been using a lot of belts.

I have been using a lot of belts now, and always have. I like the waist and the sexiness a belt creates. If you put a belt on the waist it makes you longer. The whole hip thing makes you shorter, makes you look squatty. If you put a belt up high you look taller and thinner.

What about jewelry?

It’s just whatever I look at and say it’s pretty. (Amen to that!)

Where do you find most of the clothes?

I find them everywhere, all around the world, in showrooms. I just call up people or people call me and they want to see their things. But it’s not only designer, it’s thrift store, it’s shopping. It’s getting a lot of clothes and putting together pretty outfits.

What was your approach with Cashmere Mafia?

I tried to watch it but it wasn’t on Wednesday night. I haven’t seen it yet! The basis is the same, you use logic and rational thinking but it’s a different project and different people. Lucy Liu is really fun to work with, she’s smart, she knows what time it is. Each experience is always different. It’s very exciting and that’s why I love it.

Pilot Watch: Cashmere Mafia

With several new series set to premiere this Winter, I'm resurrecting my occasional pilot watch feature to share my first impressions of the upcoming shows. First up is the highly anticipated ABC series Cashmere Mafia, which premieres this Sunday, Jan. 6, before moving to its regular Wednesday time slot.

What's it about? Four business-school friends turned powerful New Yorkers conquer the boardroom and the bedroom.

Who's in it? Lucy Liu, Miranda Otto, Bonnie Somerville, Frances O'Connor

The good: The show has its roots in Sex and The City, with writer Darren Star serving as the show's executive producer, so that's not a bad pedigree for another series about female friendships. The pilot has a few genuinely funny moments, especially from Somerville and Otto, the latter of whom looks and acts like a junior Bree (Van de Kamp) Hodge. The outfits from SaTC costume designer Patricia Field are alternately brilliant and horrible, but at least they're never dull.

The bad: The first episode introduces far too many convenient plot lines to make a coherent story: There's an engagement, then a broken engagement; an affair, its discovery, and revenge; a nanny introduced and quickly dropped; a lesbian plot line that evolves from a quick glance to a kiss in mere minutes. It's so frenetic and covers so much ground that when one character said "I'm late," I half expected the next line to be "I'm due in June; the baby's yours." (The second episode calms that pace down somewhat.) The show is supposed to be about the characters' office lives, but after two episodes, I still didn't know what three of them actually did. And, maybe worst of all, the four main characters don't have the easy chemistry of the SaTC ladies or even the Desperate Housewives.

Will I watch? Well, there's not much else on, so why not? Honestly, though, the second episode was a bit better than the first - though still not great - and so I suppose I'll give it a few more shots. The show only completed seven episodes before the strike started, so it's not a huge commitment.

Lucy Liu All Tangled Up in Blue

Lucy Liu was showing off some of Cashmere Mafia's cold weather wardrobe hanging out at a dog park in NYC on Thursday. That dog looks as confused as I am by her outfit. While filming rolls on for the series, thanks to the Writers' Strike it has no official start date. Good news though - the writers and producers are resuming negotiations on November 26! Here's to hoping they're able to reach a (better) deal quickly so that crews can stop losing their jobs, everyone can get back to work and, you know, we the viewers will get our favorite shows.

Cashmere Mafia Keeps Us Waiting

Lucy Liu and her Cashmere Mafia co-star Bonnie Somerville were dressed to the nines on the set in NYC yesterday. Patricia Field and the masterminds over at ABC must be hoping to use the characters' elaborate wardrobes to get our attention. It's worked before and therefore they are obviously being compared to the SatC ladies. We can't help but wonder what the shoe discussions would be like if all these working women ran into each other on their sets. Fall TV has just started but unfortunately we're going to have to wait until November to see Cashmere Mafia.

Lucy + Tom Everett Scott = New Carrie + Mr. Big?

Lucy Liu and Tom Everett Scott looked positively Carrie and Big filming in the streets of NYC on Tuesday night. It's going to be hard for Cashmere Mafia to come out from the shadow of that other show about 4 women in NYC -- but at this point I can't help but see all the similarities. From the Patricia Field wardrobe (hey, at least this dress is less crazy) to just seeing the cast on the streets of Manhattan at night. I just love how happy Lucy looks with every moment of it - hopefully she never loses all that infective enthusiasm.

Lucy Liu Already Has Carrie-esque Quirky Style

Patricia Field has definitely done it again! What she was able to do with the wardrobe on Sex and the City definitely changed the way a lot of women dress and judging from Lucy Liu's on-set Cashmere Mafia get up -- network TV isn't toning down her style. Hey, who knows, this time next year maybe we'll all be mixing super loud plaids - golfer chic to a new extreme. CM doesn't premiere until November, but if she's going to be making out with cuties like That Thing You Do's Tom Everett Scott it'll definitely be worth the wait.

Cashmere Mafia Has Nothing to do with Sweater Sets!

At ABC's TCAs Sex and the City creator Darren Star was asked the obvious over and over again. His new show includes Miranda Otto, Frances O'Connor, Bonnie Somerville and Lucy Liu as his new dream foursome in the mid season guilty pleasure, Cashmere Mafia. Yes, the cast has four beautiful women living in NYC but he promises this show is different than that Sex show we all can't stop talking about. He also addressed the movie rumors (sort of) and how this show is a lot like that other one called Lipstick Jungle based on the book by his good friend who also wrote SATC. Here are highlights:

Difference between CM and SATC:
"This is a show that examines women from the point of view of women in business and the particular challenges they face as career women. SATC is a comedy about sex.... the shows are looking at women from two different points of view."
When asked for any teasers about the SATC movie Darren joked:
"It features four women." He then went on to only say, that there is a script and it's in the form of pre-production so at least that is more evidence that the movie is on its way to being made.
On NBC's Lipstick Jungle:
"I'm a dear friend of Candace and I read "Lipstick Jungle" which I think is a terrific book, and at the time we were talking about it, I did not end up producing "Lipstick Jungle" and it sort of went on its merry way for a couple of years. And then this idea came to Kevin and I through Gail and ABC and I thought absolutely. I'm still very energized creatively by this arena. And the idea that there can be two shows about "Saturday Night Live" on one network, to say that there can't be more than one show about working women is ridiculous because there is so much material there."

What else do we have to look forward to? How about the adorable Lucy Liu being dressed by Patricia Field! It's hard to not make the comparisons to SJP but based on how they talked about how the designer works on the set we can expect lots of exciting new outfits. Patricia Field's New Fab Foursome!

Pop and Buzz are at the ABC TCAs and found out some juicy news! We're all looking forward to the much talked about Sex and the City movie partly because we love the work of the one, the only, costume designer: Patricia Field. Well, she is on board to dress the hottest new foursome in ABC's new show, Cashmere Mafia. Here's what Lucy Liu had to say about the amount of effort that goes into their wardrobes:

Patricia Field is somebody that we were lucky enough to have come onto our show. She has an incredible talent for putting together pieces and making them look like art. She never repeats an outfit, as she said in my fitting, and she also puts together things that you would never imagine. I mean, she could put, you know, something from the 80s, put a modern belt on it, and put some shoes, with a purse form the 70s and the look looks great. And she also goes with what she thinks the actors are like and what she's seen of our work and how we move and how we -- you know, how we like to illuminate the screen. And so she sort of puts that in conjunction with what we are working on to create a new look. And because she also did "Sex and the City," which I know that a lot of people will be comparing the two shows, she knows what not to repeat. If anything, she's going to want to start something completely new because that's who she is. She doesn't even like to repeat her own work. So that's the one thing we are graced with in terms of fashion, is her. I think we can just kind of show up and have her throw anything she wants on us.

Sounds like Lucy knows she will be compared to Carrie Bradshaw but she'll most likely be setting her own trends thanks to Patricia's amazing skills. And, we can look forward to Pat delivering beyond the creativity we all grew to love on SATC! Bring it!

Get a Sneak Peek of ABC's New Shows

ABC isn't giving us quite as extensive a sneak peek of its fall lineup as NBC did for its new shows, but we can still get a taste: In addition to a ton of photos of the new shows and their casts, ABC's put up brief video clips of its pilots. You can see the whole batch of them together, or you can just click on the name of the show in this list to go directly to that show's clip: "Sam I Am," "Cavemen," "Carpoolers," "Pushing Daisies," "Private Practice," "Dirty Sexy Money," "Big Shots," "Women's Murder Club," "Cashmere Mafia," "Eli Stone," and "Miss/Guided."

It's not easy to judge a show from a minute of video, but I'm going to try anyway. "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Pushing Daisies" grabbed me the most, "Miss/Guided" could either be wonderful or awful, "Eli Stone" is worth watching for the George Michael cameo, "Big Shots" is "Sex and the City" for dudes (but does star geek-wonderful Joshua Malina, so points for that), and "Cavemen" ... well, at least it made me chuckle, which is more than I can say for "Carpoolers."

Lucy Rolls With her Cashmere Mafia

Gorgeous Lucy Liu was smack dab in the middle of her very own Sex and the City set (only with 400% more fabulous coats!) shooting her upcoming series Cashmere Mafia in NYC this week. The show, which centers around four female execs, is created by Darren Star just like the original sex so the SatC parallels are (thankfully) intentional. Clearly, looking at this foursome, they're not afraid of comparisons. Being an ABC pilot, however, it will certainly be more tame. Remember when Lucy was on SatC? So awesomely sassy. So, this show maybe has some potential, I'm just hoping it doesn't fall too easily into old stereotypes.
