Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were a study in contrasts today as they headed out together in NYC's Upper East Side. Ashley wore a neutral maxi dress, while Mary-Kate paired her new tan with a black shirt and skinny, dark jeans. The sisters and business partners did have their signature to-go coffee cups and oversized sunglasses in common. It's been a busy Summer for the pair, and while Mary-Kate's new glow might be the result of a well-deserved getaway, she and Ashley have been hard at work on their fashion empire for the past several months. Not only did they just launch their new shopping site StyleMint with a collection of t-shirts, but they're also introducing handbags to The Row and were nominated for a CFDA award.

Mary-Kate Olsen teamed up with actress Catherine Keener last night for a party for Style Wars, a documentary about hip-hop and street art that was released in 1983. It was an evening of fashionable shoulder rubbing for Mary-Kate, who also spent time with New York Rangers player Sean Avery. Ashley Olsen skipped out on the dinner, but she was spotted in the city this morning heading to a meeting. Both Mary-Kate and Ashley have been busy doing press for their various collections and new online shopping venture StyleMint, and recently spoke about the massive time commitment maintaining their style empire requires. Mary-Kate and Ashley touched on their "hobo-chic" period, their wide group of friends, and the power of the Olsen brand. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen told Style.com:

Ashley on their long hours: "I don’t think it’s the creative process that has ever gotten to us. More than anything, it’s about trying to find balance with work and how we can personally stay balanced while having our corporations grow, and I think that’s been the biggest thing that we are constantly aware of. We have to put boundaries on scheduling. We work crazy hours every week, so it’s been more about figuring out when we need to put our foot down. “We can’t add this extra meeting. It’s one too many meetings in a day; push it later.” So it’s been about that. And with The Row, it’s about how to elevate the process with growth without putting too much on the overhead."
Mary-Kate on the Olsen brand: "All over the world I think people know us from different stages of our life and different things, whether it’s videos or Walmart or as designers or acting. . . I think it’s remarkable that children know us now from things that we did 20 years ago, when we were little guys."
Mary-Kate on her "hobo-chic" period: "For me, it was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you’re going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow?"
Ashley on hanging out with other designers: "I mean, honestly, I don’t leave my house. . . . I’m friendly with a lot of people, but when it comes down to it, you won’t see me actually in that [scene] . . . our closest friends are in all types of fields. My best friend is in law school, the other one’s a Pilates instructor, the other one’s a yoga teacher, the other one works in production, real estate, an entrepreneur."

StyeMint will be made in collaboration with the same company who created JewelMint, BeachMint, and is set to feature an eight-piece, t-shirt collection – with the possibility of expanding into knits and sweaters in the future - which Mary-Kate and Ashley will help design and merchandise. The best part? Each piece retails for only $29.99. The duo are also set to create regular videos for the site, a treat since we hardly ever see the Olsens on camera, in addition to giving personal style tips and fashion advice. Mary-Kate juggled a phone call, her purse, and an extra-large water bottle as she hopped into a waiting SUV this morning, while Ashley made a stylish exit from a hotel in sunglasses and a summery maxi skirt and flatforms. Ashley was solo as she headed out, and while recent rumors linked her to Justin Timberlake, his rep has made it clear that JT and Ashley are just friends. Ashley split from actor Justin Bartha earlier this year and recently told Style.com that these days, she prefers to keep her social circle small but diverse. As the Olsens point out in that interview, most of their time is devoted to growing their fashion empire, which includes The Row, Elizabeth and James, and their soon-to-launch ecommerce site StyleMint. Their collections have been such a success that Newsweek recently called the duo "America's next billionaires."

The event was held to honor Karen Katz, CEO of Neiman Marcus, and Gina Saunders, CEO of the Fairchild Fashion Group. Mary-Kate and Ashley aren't strangers to rubbing shoulders with the city's powerful women - they recently linked up with Diane von Furstenberg for the CFDA nominations ceremony, where the sisters picked up a nod for their work on The Row. Mary-Kate has been by Ashley's side more than ever over the past few weeks following the latter's split from boyfriend Justin Bartha. They jet between the East and West Coasts regularly, hosting parties with starlets like Nicole Richie and Dakota Fanning in LA and returning to the Big Apple with Ashley's French bulldog. They've still found time, however, to continue expanding their fashion empire with their just-announced new online venture called StyleMint.

This day marks the day two fashionistas - Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen - entered this world 25 years ago. And we're glad they did! We can't imagine life without their distinctive, covetable style. While Mary-Kate stays true to her bohemian-chic style roots - rocking oversize printed dresses, tons of jewelry, and John Lennon-style sunnies - Ashley makes the most of her minimalist polish; nobody can kill a white button-down or Calvin Klein sheath dress like her. They've accomplished so much already, it's hard to believe they're only four years beyond the legal drinking age. The moguls posed for Bruce Weber in a series of pretty and relaxed pictures - check out the whole set. In the interview with writer Sarah Mower, Mary-Kate and Ashley got serious talking about The Row, their experience with fashion, and what it's like being so close with each other. The designers are enjoying critical and commercial success with their three lines and also just earned a coveted CFDA nomination for The Row! The girls are constantly expanding their empire and a newer addition to the luxury line is bags, one of which is called "The Twin". Here are highlights, including a sweet soundbite from friend Carey Mulligan:

Mary-Kate on being so close: "Some of our memories are shared. We don't know what actually happened to whom. One of us was stung by a bee, but we can't remember who, because we both felt it."
Ashley on leaving acting: "I am so proud of what we did. We made kids smile every day. But we had done the most we could do." MK: "There was a fear, but also, an exhale."
MK on being exposed to fashion through TV and movie wardrobes: "It was so fun because it was all about clothing and hairstyles. We had to change twelve times every episode. There would be five or six racks of clothes there, and they cut them down to fit us-even Chanel." Ashley: "We were involved 100 percent in the fittings. And at that age when you become so crazy about how you look sometimes there were three or four fittings. All our memories are of shooting."
Ashley on sharing clothes: "There's hers, there's mine. And a huge 'maybe' pile."
Ashley on the future: "I want to run a studio. I'd probably like to manage other people on their brands. It could be an artist. A young designer. It could be an existing brand." MK: "The thing about us is we think big. Huge."
Carey Mulligan on MK and Ashley: "I couldn't believe what they did when I texted in a panic about having nothing to wear for my audition for Gatsby. I was hoping they'd send me some things from The Row, but then these huge boxes arrived-Ashley's entire collection of thirties vintage dresses."
