Johnny and Tim Go Stone Faced For Sweeney

Don't Johnny Depp and Tim Burton looked thrilled at yet another screening of Sweeney Todd? The duo hit the black carpet in Paris yesterday, but you would think there would be a little more excitement from the Golden Globe winners and new double BAFTA nominees. Even if he can't give us a smile, at least Johnny opened up a bit about his big win, saying, "I was very surprised certainly. Flattered. Honored!" He also made a quick comment about the writers, saying, "We need to get them back working." Short and sweet, but we couldn't agree more.

Sweeney Todd Sheds Blood on the UK

Johnny was showing off some more of that smooth chest for the Sweeney Todd premiere, but something about his suit seems supersized. Luckily, new mama Helena Bonham Carter was there to take some of the attention off Johnny with her bright red dress. Johnny may be your choice for Favorite Male Star, but he credits his success to his director, saying, "Tim is what makes it special, I love to work with him." We think Johnny is pretty special all by himself but love that he has so much admiration and appreciation for his BFF.

Johnny and Tim Take Sweeney Overseas

Johnny Depp took his signature hat and sunglasses to Japan to promote Sweeney Todd today. He swapped his plaid shirt with a suit for the premiere with his BFF Tim Burton, but kept it quirky as usual with his untied tie. Now that the Golden Globes are officially canceled, we're sad that we won't have Johnny's pretty face gracing the red carpet this weekend, but hopefully at least he and Tim will take home some of the awards they've been nominated for. We'll still be covering the event and winners, so if you think you already know who's going to end up with those trophies this weekend (or even if you're just a great guesser), be sure to fill out a ballot for your chance to win a free year of entertainment!

Johnny and Tim's Sweeney Todd Meets NYC

Johnny Depp put on a dapper suit with some snazzy red accents (but kept the scuffed up shoes) for last night's NYC premiere of Sweeney Todd. Of course, his partner, friend and director Tim Burton was there to show off his newest masterpiece, but both gentlemen's ladyfolk opted out. Also flying solo for the evening was new dad Sacha Baron Cohen, though I can't blame Isla for wanting to stay home with amazingly adorable Olive. Zachary Quinto - exciting Sylar stuff last night, eh? - dressed it up with a turtleneck sweater (see: Heroes Rule). We've still got a few more weeks to wait for the December 21 release date, but hopefully before then we'll get more of their red and black (oooh, gruesome) themed premieres to tide us over until then.

Johnny Is Okay With Being Weird

Sweetheart Johnny Depp put on his best freaky Sweeney Todd face for this week's EW cover. Yesterday we read his amazingly sweet quotes about his daughter and working with his friend Tim, and now here's more from his awesome interview. Also, how cute is he in that picture with Tim Burton? Love them. Here's more:

EW: Did you let your family in on your Sweeney singing practice?
Depp: When I was doing the demos in Los Angeles, I came home and played it for Vanessa. That was one of the more frightening moments. You go I'm gonna fall on my face.
EW: What did they make of it?
Depp: They said, "Is that you?"
EW: Do the often weigh in on your performances?
Depp: After Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, [my family] went to see it. I hadn't seen it. I was waiting at home, and they came back. And my daughter came up and went, "You're really weird."
EW: So you haven't seen Charlie since then?
I still haven't. I find it so difficult to watch anything I'm in. I don't like to be aware of myself in that way. I love discovering moments on the set. But I can't stand the idea that I have to see it later.

Johnny is definitely a little bit weird, but in the best possible way. It's too bad that he doesn't like to watch himself on screen, because he's pretty great when he's up there.

Sweeney Todd's LA Premiere & Facial Hair Convention

Last night some amazingly talented men came out to the premiere of Sweeney Todd . . . and then there was Wilmer Valderrama. Don't get me wrong - he's actually a successful entrepreneur in Hollywood. My personal favorite is Handy Manny (no really, Katie loves it). Yet, obviously he is a bit out of place when paired next to the talented a-listers like Johnny Depp and Steven Spielberg. One thing he has in common with these men tonight - the fancy facial hair. Seriously, what's up with all the hairy men? Somehow we left off Johnny and Tim from our favorite BFF poll, but these two are certainly the most creative of the bunch. We can't wait to see their latest imaginative world they created in Sweeney Todd.

Johnny and Tim Are In Their Own Little World

Johnny Depp took off his hat and looks hotter than ever on the January cover of Esquire Magazine. Of course, in the pages he is accompanied by his good friend and colleague Tim Burton, because it seems like if someone's gotta go out and do press for Sweeney Todd, these two would much rather do it together. Johnny talks about what it was like to sing on screen for the first time at 43 and jokes about how many times he has married Helena Bonham Carter on screen. At the end of the day, it's just incredibly sweet to witness their mutual respect and admiration. Here are highlights:

JD: We speak in a sort of shorthand.
TB: It's not literal. We'll cross-reference things that wouldn't really make sense to the normal person.
JD: One time, Tim and I were talking before we were getting ready to shoot. Afterward, one of the grips comes over to me with this really perplexed look on his face. He says, "I was just watching you and Tim talk about the scene for the last fifteen minutes." "Yeah." And he says, "I didn't understand a f****** word either of you said."
TB: That about sums it up.

JD: I don't think we've ever had an argument.
TB: I don't think so. There have been differences of opinion and different takes on certain things.
JD: But even in that kind of situation, Tim just says, "Okay, do it like you want and then do it the other way."

Considering the excellent things these two have created before, I can only imagine the creepy and surreal fun that will be Sweeney Todd. Plus, we all know that any Johnny on the big screen (even when he's scary) is a treat.

Johnny Depp Has Both Brains and Beauty

Johnny Depp was still pulling off his perfectly disheveled layered look in London on Wednesday where he was spotted having dinner with Tim Burton and pregnant Helena Bonham Carter. After the jump check out a video of Johnny and Tim talking about Sweeney Todd on Entertainment Tonight - it's quite cute when Tim tries to compliment Johnny who instead passes the kind words onto Helena. Mr. Depp seems so humble despite constant accolades from his peers and fans. To add another feather in his unique cap, or fedora, he scored #21 on EW's 50 Smartest People in Hollywood. Seeing so much of Johnny is a holiday gift that will hopefully keep giving, right up until Sweeney Todd's Christmas release date.

Costume Designers Get Their Own Gala

The Oscars are almost here, but Hollywood is still busy with other awards shows, like the 10th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. The trophies merited looks from Blades of Glory, Ugly Betty, and Sweeney Todd. Katie Holmes was on hand to honor Tom's longtime producing partner, Paula Wagner with the Swarovski President's Award last night in Beverly Hills. Considering the show was recognizing the industry's fabulous designers, we were a bit disappointed with what the stars picked out for the event, like Ginnifer's loud little number and Katie's not-so-flattering ice princess look. At least Christian Bale looked dapper as the male representative for the night.

Johnny Depp Is Just Enjoying Being an Oscar Nominee

Judging from Johnny Depp's headwear, he'd be right at home in one of this Spring's anticipated blockbusters but instead he was just keeping it incognito in LA this week. We missed seeing his pretty face at the SAG Awards and getting to hear his Golden Globes acceptance speech, but we're glad that the Academy recognized his work in Sweeney Todd with a Best Actor nod. The Oscar competition is going to get fierce between fellow nominees Clooney and Daniel-Day Lewis, but as long as we get a glimpse of Johnny on the big night, there won't be any complaints here.
