Spike Directs Brad's Sumo Strength

Brad Pitt held a sumo wrestler in his arms while filming his Japanese Softbank commercial in NYC yesterday. Spike Jonze joined him on set, adding another dose of star power to what looks like a pretty funny commercial. Brad's known around Hollywood for being a prankster, and from seeing these photos, this new advertisement seems like it's right up his alley.

Winners and Stars Spread Out the Afterparty Love

After the Oscars were all the afterparties, and while Vanity Fair and Elton John may have drawn the most star-studded crowds, there seemed to be a celebrity attendee at all of them. Hilary Duff swung by Leeza Gibbons's 1st Annual Night to Make a Difference where she was joined by Paris Hilton and Jessica Biel, who was out of her worst-dressed contending gown and into something more bright. Elsewhere in town Lauren Conrad and Lo Bosworth walked the red carpet at a party benefiting Children Uniting Nations.

The Slumdog Millionaire kids were still giddy from their best picture win, staying up way past their bedtimes for a party honoring their movie and The Wrestler. Freida Pinto danced the night away while Dev Patel kept an eye on his younger castmates. Mickey Rourke had other things to do on the big night, despite the fact that he was beaten out by his friend Sean Penn. The parties went on until the wee hours of the morning - it looks like no one wanted the night to end, especially the winners.

Hollywood Gets Independent and Spirited Before the Oscars

Before we were overcome with Oscar mania, lots of stars headed to the Independent Spirit Awards in LA on Saturday. After the exciting red carpet, the show was full of parodies and dance numbers featuring Teri Hatcher, Christina Applegate and Rainn Wilson goofing it up onstage. The Wrestler was a big winner, taking home honors for Best Film as well as Best Male Lead. Mickey Rourke gave an off-the-cuff acceptance speech, dedicated to his recently deceased dog Loki. Other winners like Penelope Cruz and James Franco celebrated with their trophies in the press room. Mary-Kate Olsen and Ben Kingsley were two of the many famous presenters along with Jessica Alba, Lucy Liu and the newly engaged Claire Danes. Elizabeth Banks and a scruffy Bradley Cooper also took the stage to present. This awards show honored films that cost less than $20 million to make but gave the stars a preview of what was to come on Oscar Sunday.

Sean Penn Talks Politics in the Press Room

Sean Penn passionately spoke about Milk's importance and message onstage and he continued his heartfelt thanks from the press room. He talked about Obama's need to examine his official stance on gay marriage, since the change will come, and says he hopes that the president's current stance is not a "felt one." He also spoke a bit about what it meant to take part in the project, and about his fellow nominee Mickey Rourke:

On what the movie means to him: It means a lot to myself and everyone involved not only in the movie, but anybody who believes in equal rights for human beings. It’s really simple . . . There’s nothing more important than the themes that are in this movie. To be part of something like that is a privilege.
On Mickey Rourke: I’ve known Mickey for over 25 years and I can't speak for [his consistency] since he's an excellent bridge burner at times, but we've had for the most part friendship. I’ve looked up to, advised, wanted to work with, admired him. He had me weeping through The Wrestler. He’s one of our most talented actors. One of the great poetic talents in acting.

Tom Goes From Dave to Ryan to Talk About Valkyrie

Tom Cruise made time to sign autographs before heading to The Late Show in NYC last night as he continued to promote Valkyrie after its premiere on Monday night. Dave and Tom took a trip down memory lane, looking at photos of Tom as a high school wrestler, friend of Paul Newman, and of course, a family man. Tom kept talking about his wife and kids this morning on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, where he opened up about Katie's birthday, their holiday plans, and Suri. Here's more:

On celebrating Katie's birthday tomorrow: "She's going to be onstage, she's doing All My Sons on Broadway. I've got some things planned tonight, I've been kind of surprising her throughout the week with things . . . I like romance, so you've got to think about these things, you've got to know the right thing and pay attention throughout the year. Know your lady - the flowers, what kind she likes."
On their Christmas plans: "We're still kind of deciding, because Kate's here on Broadway and they've only got two days off. I mean, they're doing two shows a day for three days in a row or something crazy like that, so we're still working it. I'm going to finish this publicity. The main thing we know we're going to do is just nice family time and stuff. Kate always sets everything up like that, she loves it. She kind of designs out life, so there's the dinners and cooking and the whole thing."
On Suri seeing him in an eye patch for Valkyrie: "The kids always, all of them, they grew up on a movie set, so they'll sit on my lap while I'm getting made up - I like to have them around while I'm creating a character so that they get used to it. But Suri would come up and pull the eye patch off when she was sitting on my lap, she'd come up and take it off but then eventually she got used to it."

He's been all over lately to chat about his movie, and there's sure to be lots more of Tom before its release on Christmas day.
