If magic man Criss Angel had his way, Britney Spears‘ 2007 VMAs Performance would have turned out much, much, much differently.
The L.A. Times recently spoke with the 40-year-old magician to hear his original ideas for Britney’s VMAs performance. Here’s what he said:
“With Britney I presented concepts to create, within her performance, illusions that would happen in the open. You would see Britney and then she would split into two Britneys and then four Britneys with no boxes or covers. It would just be a visual effect using no screens. People in the past have used the art of magic in music performances but mostly in a cheesy way. Magic has not kept up with popular culture and technology.
“Other things I wanted to do with her was to literally transform her into birds and then for her to reappear in the audience. I also thought of having her levitate over the audience. It was going to be really visual moments that were all epic tableaux that were beautiful, artistic, elegant and, most important, unique - things MTV hasn’t seen in music. I wanted to captivate people in the moment. That was the essence of what I wanted to do with the Britney performance, because I think the performance she did with the snake was a highlight of her career and I wanted to trump that and I thought we had it.”
So, what happened?
“Britney is really strong with her own ideas. And what I had planned wasn’t an easy thing to do and would have required a lot of rehearsals. Ultimately, I told her I needed 100% commitment or I wasn’t going to be able to do this. I told her that, ‘You have to feel comfortable.’ So, we explored it and she decided it wasn’t for her, and I completely understand.”

Illusionist Criss Angel pulled out of the Britney's VMA performance after she wouldn't put in enough effort.

Escapologist Criss Angel did what he does best when it came to assessing Britney Spears's notorious Sept. 9 performance on the MTV Video Music Awards: He skirted the question.

"Were you embarrassed for her?" Larry King, on his Tuesday night CNN show, asked Angel, who had helped Spears with her VMA number, "Gimme More" – for which she ended up roundly criticized.

"I understand what she goes through in her life – she lives under a microscope, and it's unbelievable to see – it's difficult to watch," answered Angel, 39.

"I really feel for her, I want the best for her, I want her to feel complete, and if she's happy with her performance I guess that's what matters," the Mindfreak mentalist said.

As for how his involvement with the troubled pop star came about, Angel explained, "I was asked by my manager, who was also managing her career for a short time, to help put something together."

As far as rehearsals went, "Everybody loved what we came up with, but it required a tremendous amount of work and dedication that Britney decided to not want to put forth and do something that she felt would be better suited for her," Angel said.

He also denied rumors that he and Spears had been romantically involved, and said that he's just "friends" with both Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.

He did, however, cop to having dated Cameron Diaz whom he calls "an amazing human being" with a "heart of gold."

Sarah Silverman to blame for Britney's lackluster performance

Over on Breatheheavy.com its being reported that not long before the show Britney overheard Sarah Sivlerman practicing her Monologue an the very rude things she said about her kids. Britney was apparently furious and threatened to not go on stage. Sarah was supposedly told not to say that about Britneys kids, but obviously did anyways. Maybe thats why Britney was so upset. Its also said that immediatly after her performance she was seen crying. Poor Britney.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- As in most train wrecks, it was hard to focus on just one thing as the Britney Spears disaster unfolded. There was just so much that went wrong.

Britney Spears begins the show Sunday night with her new single, "Gimme More."

Out-of-synch lip-synching. Lethargic movements that seemed choreographed by a dance instructor for a nursing home. The paunch in place of Spears' once-taut belly. At times she just stopped singing altogether, as if even she knew nothing could save her performance.

Designed to drum up excitement for her upcoming album, Spears' kickoff to the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night became another example of how far she has fallen. It would have been understandable if MTV's show had been crushed under the weight of the opening fiasco -- yet somehow it rebounded, and even flourished.

The show banked heavily on its own reinvention. After poor reviews and a decline in ratings over the last few years, MTV moved the show to Vegas, shortened it from three hours to two, went to a hostless format and focused more on performances than awards.

Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy and the Foo Fighters hosted separate suite parties where most of the performances took place.

But the performance most people will be talking about was Spears'. And unlike her last VMAs appearance, when she locked lips with Madonna in 2003, this time it will be for all the wrong reasons.

"It definitely could have been a lot better," the hitmaking singer and producer Akon commented afterward. "She seemed nervous ... you could tell by the expression on her face. Instead of just blocking everybody out and doing her thing, you could tell she was thinking about it." Watch Spears on stage as spectators squirm »

After that, though, the changes to the show worked, leading to several exciting performances and some watercooler drama. An off-camera fight between Pamela Anderson exes Kid Rock and Tommy Lee led Jamie Foxx to quip: "Stop all this white-on-white violence."

Kid Rock was later cited by police for misdemeanor battery. He wasn't taken into custody, an officer said.

MTV VJ Sway said during the post-show that he saw Kid Rock walk up to the 44-year-old Motley Crue drummer, who was sitting next to Sean "Diddy" Combs, and "deck him."

Another eyewitness, rap producer Rich Nice, said although Kid Rock threw the only blows that landed -- a backhand slap and a punch -- Lee was the instigator.

Timberlake's suite was flooded with revelers, alcohol and eight lingerie-clad stripper types on raised platforms. Before Timberlake accepted the Quadruple Threat of the Year award at his suite, the DJ summoned the partygoers to watch the monitor and go crazy if Timberlake won. He did, they did, and Timberlake said: "I want to challenge MTV to play more videos!" Then he was whisked away by bodyguards and disappeared.

Timberlake was the night's big winner, with four trophies. After accepting the award for Male Artist of the Year, he jabbed at the video issue again: "We don't want to see the Simpsons on reality television." Apparently he's not a fan of either Jessica or Ashlee's MTV shows.

Rihanna won the coveted Video of the Year award, plus Monster Single of the Year for "Umbrella." The Best Group was Fallout Boy, and Gym Class Heroes won Best New Artist.

Beyonce and Shakira won Most Earthshattering Collaboration for "Beautiful Liar." Beyonce's shimmering gold dress barely contained her top; immediately after she picked up her trophy she asked an assistant backstage to help fix her dress, apparently to prevent a wardrobe malfunction.

Other performers appeared on the show's main stage, in front of an industry-only audience seated at tables, like at the Golden Globes. Chris Brown gave one of the evening's most extravagant performances -- hopping from table to table in a dance spectacle that channeled Michael Jackson, right down to a brief "Billie Jean" imitation.

Alicia Keys had the evening's most rousing performance, debuting her new song "No One" and then an inspired, choir-backed cover of George Michael's "Freedom."

While performances like Keys' and Spears' were delivered on the main stage, others came in snippets: Akon crooned a bit of his "Smack That" before an award was announced, while the cameras zoomed in on Fall Out Boy and the Foo Fighters mid-performance in their suites, giving viewers the sense that they had happened upon an intimate concert.

Cee-Lo delivered a rocking version of Prince's naughty classic "Darling Nikki" in the smoky Foo Fighters suite (where a beer bong was in operation as Dave Grohl danced, sang Cure songs, played air drums and posed for snapshots); Soulja Boy was showing Kanye West his "Crank That" dance in West's suite.

Though the suites appeared to be chaotic parties, the MTV-cast revelers were carefully organized, strategically placed and encouraged to imbibe for the cameras.

Choreographed or not, Timberlake and Timbaland's suite looked the most exciting -- T.I., buffeted by pole dancers, delivered a rousing version of "Big Things Poppin"' while 50 Cent stopped by to perform "Ayo Technology" with Timberlake and Timbaland.

Not to be outdone, T-Pain and West danced high atop Las Vegas in a balcony suite as they celebrated "The Good Life." And Lil Wayne, doing double duty in the Fall Out Boy suite after opening the pre-show with Nicole Scherzinger, was particularly animated.

TV viewers never got full views of those shows, though MTV promised more via its Web site and other "remixed" versions of the show. That might have been the purpose: to whet appetites for repeat viewings by promising glimpses of what they missed during the traditional broadcast.

Katy Perry to Perform "Like a Virgin" at VMAs

British comic Russell Brand has revealed "I Kissed a Girl" singer Katy Perry will perform "Like a Virgin" at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.

"There's a lot of virginity and lesbianism going on at the show," the English host told reporters at a press preview held Thursday, at the Paramount Pictures lot where the ceremony will be held.

Brand dubbed the Jonas Brothers "God's favorite virgins."

When the Jonas Brothers hit the stage on Sunday, "it will make the concept of an afterlife seem tame by comparison," Brand joked.

The Jonas Brother will have some competition from Christina Aguilera.

Aguilera, clad in sky-high heels and hot-pink lipstick, joined Brand at the preview to announce she'll be belting her new single "Keeps Getting Better," which is also the name of the best-of album she's releasing in November.

"You're going to get a first look and a first listen at my new image and my new sound," Aguilera told reporters. "The last album, the style and sound was about vintage glam - this one is all about the future."

Aguilera said that this would be the first time her son Max would be able to see her on TV, to which, Brand joked, "The VMAs are going to be so great that Christina Aguilera is willing to risk her newborn baby's sight!"

T.I. also showed up with news that he'll be debuting a new song with Rihanna.

Later, Brand dished that the Jonas Brothers requested to be introduced by Taylor Swift. He cracked that Swift was "a decision made from below their sexy little waists."

At the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, according to the AP, West was upset about being shut out of all five categories in which he was nominated, that West claimed he would "never return to MTV."

Britney Spears May Return to VMAs

Britney Spears is welcome back at this year's Video Music Awards.

"Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?" Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music Group, told the Associated Press Friday. When asked if he was just joking, Toffler said, "Sorta."

"Who knows?" he said.

A scantily clad Spears famously attempted a career comeback at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas in 2007.

Viewers weren't the only ones who were left disappointed by her lackluster performance of "Gimme More."

A source told Us that Spears was spotted "crying badly [backstage]."

This year's VMAs will air live from Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on September 7.

"I'm not sure how we top Britney opening the show," Toffler told the AP. "We are working on it every minute of every day."

New Mum Aguilera Wows VMAs

One-time pop rivals and former MICKEY MOUSE CLUB darlings CHRISTINA AGUILERA and BRITNEY SPEARS were the toast of Hollywood on Sunday night (07Sep08) at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Spears opened the show with a toast to the prizegiving on its 25th anniversary and went on to pick up her first three VMA ‘moonmen’ prizes for her Piece of Me video.

And new mum Christina Aguilera stole the show with her comeback; in what was her first public performance since becoming a mum in January (08), the busty blonde showed off her new X-Men-style look and disco sound.

Wearing black leather and a black eye mask, the Genie in a Bottle singer stunned with new single Keeps Getting Better.

Other performers, like Pink, T.I. and the Jonas Brothers used the VMAs’ Paramount Pictures site to launch into tunes from the studio’s backlot.

And the night was full of live collaborations - Kid Rock performed his summer anthem All Summer Long with Lil Wayne, while Rihanna and T.I. teamed up and Leona Lewis tackled the Animals’ Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood with Lil Wayne.

Kanye West brought the climax to the show a year after insisting he’d never return to the event after his treatment at the 2007 VMAs in Las Vegas.

Robert Pattinson: More then just Edward

Robert Thomas Pattinson was born in London, England on May 13, 1986. He has two older sisters, Victoria and Izzy. His father’s name is Richard and his mother’s name is Clare. This 22-year-old is quickly burning up in the entertainment business and is making teens, not just around the country, but around the world, swoon. He has recently received much recognition on his acting and his good looks and with the upcoming and highly anticipated release of the Twilight adaption around the corner, in which he plays one of modern teen literatures most beloved heroes, fans fervor is only bound to grow.

Pattinson has many nicknames that have accumulated amongst his family and friends, as well as his fans. There’s the name RPattz that fans around the world dubbed him as and of course, the ever so popular, Spunk Ransom, that Robert Pattinson gave himself in an MTV Twilight Tuesday interview. While those two nicknames stand out of the crowd from any other, he also goes by the nicknames, Rob and Patty, a name he was given by his surname.

This actor, who also has musical talents, didn’t start getting into acting until the age of fifteen where he joined the Barnes Theatre Club. But it

wasn’t his passion for acting that brought him to this school. Pattinson says, “My dad wanted me to be an actor,” and of course, the social aspect definitely factored in. "Drama school was a social thing. I literally went there one-hundred per cent to meet these girls sitting at the next table," He admits of his costars. Pattinson is most known for his roles in films as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and his role as Edward Cullen, in the up and coming, as well as definitely buzzed out about, Twilight. Although, his first big part in a film was actually a scene in Vanity Fair, it ended up being a deleted scene and put into the DVD as a special feature for the alternate ending. After, Pattinson took the role as Giselher in a TV film called, Ring of the Nibelungs. Then the role that put him on the map was soon after.

Playing Cedric Diggory in the fourth Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, Pattinson dug deep into his character to portray him just the right way. He went so far as to look online and see the comments of the readers of the book and has said, "I read a lot, as the shoot went on, and I read [Goblet of Fire] loads and loads of times. I sort of gradually found out about all these Harry Potter websites, and the comments they put in the forums I thought were really, really helpful, because they remind you of little things that you’ve never even noticed in the book, which are really helpful. There are lots of cool things, like even his main description, which was like ‘the strong silent type’ or something. I completely overlooked that in the book. And I read some fans saying that, so I’ll play it strong and silent." And all the hard work that he did was what made him fill in the shoes of the ever so popular, Cedric Diggory. Despite the pressures he felt in looking like perfection, as Cedric was supposed to, Pattinson nailed the role bringing the character to the big screen.

His next film which came out in 2007 was the role of Toby Jugg in The Haunted Airman. The film was about a World War II flight lieutenant who was injured and had to use a wheelchair from then on after. The character he had to portray was very traumatized and shattered from experiences, which was a far cry from the awkward and truly interesting character he played in his next film, The Bad Mother’s Handbook where he played Daniel Gale. His role as Gale is a favorite of many because of complexity of emotions that Pattinson showed he could do and the acting that he was capable of. Just as all his films do, it showed his commitment and ability to really get inside the character and that bringing the character’s physical aspect is just as important, as Pattinson showed by going as far as playing his character Daniel, with slumped shoulders.

The following projects that Pattinson worked on are currently unreleased, one of them being a short film called The Summerhouse where he played a character that leaves his girlfriend for another woman but ends up going back to her. The next two films that Rob worked on, although independent movies are getting quite the hype with audiences and fans. The first indie movie, How to Be, is about a character, Art, who is trying to find his way in life, and is frustrated while stuck in a life crisis. The character slowly realizes that life isn’t simple and that growing up, as well as finding your purpose in life are very real questions. In the movie, Pattinson shows the audience and his antsy fans some of his musical chops. He is a musician in the movie which mirrors Rob’s real life a little. Rob has said that music is his backup plan if acting doesn’t work out and with the reviews that Pattinson has been getting from fans and critics, he wouldn’t have trouble with using either one of these talents to work for him. He did so well with the character of Art that he won ‘Best Actor in a Feature’ Award at the Strasbourg Film Festival. The next indie film that Rob worked on was Little Ashes where Rob portrays the character of Salvador Dali. The film has been shown in a few film festivals like the Raindance film festival in London and is already receiving high praised reviews for Rob’s performance. The film, which fans are dying to see for many reasons, is considered to be daring and possibly controversial, which of course is one of the reasons why fans would love to see this actor tackle yet another intriguing and complex role.

Then of course, the movie that has plastered Pattinson on the map of movie history, Twilight, and not to mention the movie hasn’t even come out yet. The movie buzz is taking over the internet, television and bookstores all around the world. It’s almost guaranteed that anywhere you go, in just a few feet, Twilight merchandise, a book from the best selling series or a magazine with a Twilight mention will be there. And our very own Rpattz plays the role of the swoon-worthy, well-loved, Edward Cullen. Not only does he get high praise from his fans about his acting and good looks but the director of Twilight, Catherine Hardwicke, has only nice things to say about him as well. She gives him accolades for his performance as Edward saying he embodies what it is to be Edward Cullen- that he is Edward Cullen. She has said in an interview, “He’s a beautiful musician, a very creative soul, very similar to Edward. He just totally reads the most interesting stuff, and sees the most interesting movies, and is very introspective and diving into his existential self.”

With the pressure to be ‘perfection’ yet again, Pattinson dug deep into research for the role trying to get into the brooding mind of the vampire stuck in the body of seventeen-year-old. He read the book, Twilight, as well as draft of Midnight Sun given to him by author of the Twilight series, Stephenie Meyer. So how did Pattinson decide to play perfect Edward? Tortured. He realized that in the book, it can only be seen from Bella’s point of view, a girl who is head over heels. Knowing this, Robert went deep to see that Edward is a character, which can be seen as perfect from a love struck female but is actually a character that beats himself up for feeling too selfish. Rob joked, saying, “He’s the most ridiculous person who’s so amazing at everything." But his perception of Edward is what made Pattinson nail the role. A role that millions of fans are counting days to see brought to life.

So what else can we expect from Robert other than films on the horizon, including a vampire movie expected to make millions? His music. Pattinson explains how his interest in music began and has grown, "I have been playing the piano for my entire life - since I was three or four. And the guitar - I used to play classical guitar from when I was about five to 12 years of age. Then I didn’t play guitar for like years. About four or five years ago, I got out the guitar again and just started playing blues and stuff. I am not very good at the guitar, but I am all right. I am in a band in London as well." In anticipation, fans are anxiously awaiting to hear Pattinson on the Twilight soundtrack, where he was asked to record for the film as well.

With an array of different roles and complex characters, Robert Pattinson can only grow in the movies he will partake in the future. Whether it is in his acting or in his music, fans are definitely asking for more of him out there. With his quirkiness, talent, good looks and hard work, we can only wish this actor the best and keep a look out for more.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The consensus is clear: Britney Spears performed like she was sloshing blindfolded through mud at MTV's Video Music Awards. No one disputes that the troubled pop princess royally mangled her much-heralded comeback.

But what about the nastiest comments of all -- those about her body? "Lard and Clear," read Monday's headline in the New York Post. "The bulging belly she was flaunting was SO not hot," wrote E! Online. And so on.

Was it fair? Did Spears, lest we forget a mother of two, deserve to be held up against the standard of her once fantastically toned abs, sculpted by sessions of 1,000 tummy crunches? Or was she asking for it by choosing that unforgiving black-sequined bikini?

More profoundly, in an age where skinny models and skeletal actresses are under scrutiny for the message they're sending young girls, what does it say that we're excoriating a young woman for a little thickness in her middle? Watch Perez Hilton call Britney "awful" »

Certainly people were curious to see her. The show drew 7.1 million viewers Sunday, up 23 percent over last year's VMAs, and was the highest-rated cable program of the year among people aged 12 to 34, according to Nielsen Media Research.

On the morning after what the VH1 channel called Spears' "already historic" performance, the blogosphere was buzzing with opinions. For every "fat" comment there was an impassioned retort. "Give her a break," wrote one blogger on Aboutthink.com. "The girl's had two kids -- I hope I'm a size 10 after having kids!"

"OK, she isn't fat," wrote another. "But she isn't fit enough to be wearing (or not wearing) what she is."

For many observers, the issue was not so much the body, but the body in THAT outfit.

"In that ensemble, you just can't have an ounce of anything extra," said Janice Min, editor of the celebrity magazine US Weekly. "Many women wouldn't eat for days if they were wearing that."

"Did she look better than 99 percent of women? Yes," added Min. "But compared to her earlier form, she probably didn't look as good."

Besides, said Min, "Britney Spears has always been about the whole package. It's never been 100 percent about the talent. Is it sexist? Probably, but she's built a career on an image of sexiness."

Talk of Spears' physique comes amid an increasingly critical focus on overly skinny actresses in Hollywood, who've largely replaced supermodels as the world's fashion plates. It's hard to pick up a celebrity magazine without a critical photo of, say, Angelina Jolie's birdlike arms. And curvy actresses are getting positive attention, from Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson of "Dreamgirls" to Golden Globe-winner America Ferrara of TV's "Ugly Betty."

In the fashion industry, there's been an effort to promote healthier-looking models. "Girls aren't looking as skinny this season as they did," said Suze Yalof Scwhartz, executive editor-at-large for Glamour Magazine. "There's food backstage. They're looking sexier." At Glamour, she noted, a model won't be featured "if she shows too much clavicle."

The nastier headlines about Spears are uncalled for, Schwartz said, but at the same time, "when you walk around the stage in a black bikini in front of millions of viewers, people are going to notice." She added that though Spears doesn't have the perfect body she once did, "Most women would die for the body she has now."

An obvious question is whether a male performer would have been subjected to the same standards. Many would say no; Dave Zinczenko, editor of Men's Health magazine, says yes.

"Listen, any time you go on national television and dance in barely any clothing, you're going to be facing a lot of scrutiny," Zinczenko says. "Anybody would be asking for it." Not that many people weren't pulling for Spears, he notes: "If she had come back, she would have been the toast of the country."

And certainly she had a lot to come back from over the past few years: Well-documented parenting mishaps -- remember the baby on her lap in the driver's seat? A messy divorce from husband Kevin Federline. The famous crotch photos. The bizarre head-shaving incident. Rehab.

And now this.

"I kind of feel bad for her," said Shelley Wade, a DJ at New York City pop station Z100. "She looked really nervous. And then now, I'm looking at all these blogs this morning about how everybody thinks she's fat and I'm like, 'What! Fat?' She wasn't fat."

How all this will impact Spears' career, and sales of her new album, has yet to be seen. "I just felt like that performance was make or break for her comeback," says Wade. "Now with last night's performance, she's just kind of put herself back in the same boat ... everybody thinks she's a train wreck."

But the single of "Gimme More," the song she destroyed onstage, is off to a great start in the Top 40, says Sean Ross of Edison Research, which tracks radio play. "A great VMA performance would have probably closed the deal for her, but she's still got until Thanksgiving to do other good performances and to release a strong album with other hits on it," he said.

In any case, it seems it would never be wise to write an obituary of Spears' career.

"With everything Britney, we think this is the last chance," says Min. "The fact is, it never is.

"At least this puts attention back on her as a performer. My sense is she'd rather be judged on that than on the rehab, the drinking and the partying."
