Walk The Line

Walk the Line is a 2005 American biographical drama film, directed by James Mangold and based on the life of country singer-songwriter Johnny Cash. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Robert Patrick.

The film focuses on Cash's younger life, his romance with June Carter, and his ascent to the country music scene, with material taken from his autobiographies. Walk the Line's production budget is estimated to have been US$28,000,000.

The film previewed at the Telluride Film Festival on September 4, 2005, and went into wide release on November 18. This film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Best Actress (Reese Witherspoon). Witherspoon won the Oscar for Best Actress, the film's sole Oscar winner.

As of August 22, 2006, the film had grossed a total of $186,438,883 worldwide. On February 28, 2006, a single-disc DVD and a two-disc collector edition DVD were released; these editions sold three million copies on their first day of release. On March 25, 2008 a two-disc 'extended cut' DVD was released for region one. The feature on disc one is 17 minutes longer than the theatrical release, and disc two features eight extended musical sequences with introductions and documentaries about the making of the film.

Plot:

The film details Johnny Cash's life from his growing up as the son of a cotton picker in Dyess, Arkansas, dealing with the death of his brother, his drug addiction, subsequent rescue by future wife June Carter, and his famous concert at Folsom State Prison.

Reception:

Critics generally responded with positive reviews, garnering an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, almost exactly the same score received by Ray, a biopic about Ray Charles, to which the film is often compared.

Baltimore Sun reviewer Michael Sragow wrote, "What Phoenix and Witherspoon accomplish in this movie is transcendent. They act with every bone and inch of flesh and facial plane, and each tone and waver of their voice. They do their own singing with a startling mastery of country music's narrative musicianship."

Phoenix's performance inspired notable film critic Roger Ebert to write, "Knowing Johnny Cash's albums more or less by heart, I closed my eyes to focus on the soundtrack and decided that, yes, that was the voice of Johnny Cash I was listening to. The closing credits make it clear it's Joaquin Phoenix doing the singing, and I was gob-smacked."

Some, including Las Vegas Weekly reviewer Jeffrey M. Anderson, believed the film suffered from having important events distilled into meaningless and unrealistic circumstances. Anderson also accused director Mangold of "stretch[ing] and dilut[ing] the core story until it resembles less a great man's life than a TV movie of the week."

Awards:

Witherspoon's performance was repeatedly recognized, including an Academy Award for Best Actress and awards such as the following:

BAFTA Award as Best Actress
Broadcast Film Critic Award as Best Actress
Golden Globe Award as Best Actress - Musical or Comedy
National Society of Film Critics Award as Best Actress
Online Film Critics Society award as Best Actress
Satellite Award as Best Actress - Musical or Comedy
Screen Actors Guild Award as Best Actress
Academy Awards record
1. Best Actress (Reese Witherspoon)
Golden Globe Awards record
1. Best Musical or Comedy Picture
Happy 45th Birthday to William Bradley Pitt!

Happy Birthday to Brad! The big 4-5!

William Bradley "Brad" Pitt[1] (born December 18, 1963) is an American actor and film producer, who achieved stardom in several successful films in the mid-1990s. He has been cited as one of the world's most attractive men and his off-screen life is widely reported.[2][3] Pitt has received one Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination.

Pitt began his career in television guest spots, including a recurring role on the CBS soap opera Dallas in 1987. He was cast in supporting roles in such standard teen-oriented films, slasher flicks, comedies and family-oriented sports dramas. He gained recognition as the cowboy hitchhiker who seduces Geena Davis' character in the 1991 film Thelma & Louise. Pitt's first leading role in a major film was in Interview with the Vampire (1994). He starred in the 1995 well-received crime and science fiction films Se7en and Twelve Monkeys, for which he won a Best Performance by an Actor. Pitt achieved fame as a result of his portrayal of Tyler Durden, a straight-shooting but charismatic mastermind individual in Fight Club (1999), and since then has established himself as an A-list actor.[4] He has had his biggest commercial successes with Ocean's Eleven (2001), Spy Game (2001), Troy (2004), the action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), and Burn After Reading (2008).

Following a high profile relationship with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, and marriage to Jennifer Aniston, as of 2008, Pitt lives with actress Angelina Jolie, in a relationship that has attracted worldwide media attention.[5] He and Jolie have three adopted children, Maddox, Pax, and Zahara, as well as three biological children, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. Since his relationship with Jolie, Pitt has become increasingly involved in social issues, both in the United States and internationally.

And in other news, both Brad and Angie received Best Actor Nominations for the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards! Congrats!

Details of Angelina’s supposed invitro to conceive twins

Some of the possible details of Angelina Jolie’s (as yet not officially confirmed) pregnancy are in the new issue of the National Enquirer. The Enquirer is a little shaky on some of the specifics, but according to them Angelina agreed to have another biological child with Brad Pitt before they adopted again. This was mostly at his request. However due to her weight… or lack of weight… Angelina was unable to get pregnant. The Enquirer speculates that she was truly afraid Brad would leave her, and sought the help of an in vitro specialist.

“Brad and Angelina are absolutely thrilled, but Angelina is also very relieved,” sand an insider. “She always knew having twins was a possibility, because Brad’s sister had twins. But after trying for months to conceive naturally, she also began to fear that she’d never get pregnant again. That’s when she went to the specialist. She really believes that the new babies will finally put to rest the problems in their relationship.

…the tension between them eased after Angelina agreed to postpone another adoption to grant Brad’s wish to have another biological baby, continued the insider. “Then when she couldn’t’ get pregnant, Angelina worried that Brad might leave her. Brad really is committed to the family and wouldn’t dream of leaving his kids. but that didn’t stop Angelina from feeling insecure.”

[From the National Enquirer, February 11th 2008, print edition]

The Enquirer really loves the “Angelina is so paranoid/jealous/insecure” angle. I’m not sure I buy it. She doesn’t seem to be ridiculously desperate to keep a guy, and somehow I’ve always seen her as the one who wears the pants in that relationship. I would think that if she really is pregnant, she’s doing it because she wants to be, not just because Brad wants more biological kids.

They go on to speculate that getting pregnant has been beneficial for Angelina’s health.

It wasn’t very long ago that Angelina had lost so much weight that her friends and family were getting really worried about her health,” said the insider. “And her eating difficulties definitely played a part in her deciding to get some help in getting pregnant. As it turned out, it was the best thing she could have done. While Angelina hasn’t been looking after herself so well in the last year or so, she will do everything she can to care for her unborn babies, so her health is sure to benefit.”

[From the National Enquirer, February 11th 2008, print edition]

Everyone is always saying that Angelina Jolie is pregnant, but the speculation really hit a high note at the recent Screen Actor’s Guild awards, for which Angelina wore a long, flowing dress that would hide any bump. For the first time in ages, she actually had some curves on her body. She and Brad couldn’t keep their hands off each other, and looked happier than ever.

Looking happy and relaxed, Angelina stuck to water at the function [the Critics’ Choice Awards], while Brad drank beer and others at their table downed glasses of champagne. Around the same time, the “Tomb Raider” mom was spotted visiting the office of Dr. Jason Rothbart, who treated her during her first pregnancy and delivered baby Shiloh in Namibia 20 months ago.

[From the National Enquirer, February 11th 2008, print edition]

While the Enquirer talks about the in vitro like it’s a fact, it’s obviously rumor unless Angelina or Brad actually come out and say it. Lots of women experience fertility problems, so it is possible. But I’d say at this point it’s equally possible that Angie got pregnant the old fashioned way - especially considering that she and Brad have seemed so touchy and grabby lately. Either way, it’ll be fun to see if we get a confirmation soon.

Why Angelina Jolie Got Snubbed by the Oscars This Year

Angelina Jolie inside at the 13th Annual Critics' Choice Awards on January 7, 2008 in Santa Monica, California. Photo by: Chris Polk/WireImage.com

TUESDAY JANUARY 22, 2008
Source: US Magazine.com

When Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday morning, Angelina Jolie’s name was noticeably absent, despite scoring both Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nods.

What happened?

“It was a very strong race for best actress, and A Mighty Heart was a box office bomb,” says Thelma Adams, Us Weekly’s film critic, adding that a movie’s earnings play into who gets nominated.

Adams says many voters also could have forgotten about the flick, which opened back in June.

“It’s really about the fall movies that come out at the Toronto Film Festival [in September],” Adams says of who gets recognized.

Still, Adams says Jolie’s gritty role as Mariane Pearl, widow of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, should’ve gotten nominated.

“I personally do think her performance warranted an Oscar,” Adams says. “It was a great performance, and underneath it all, she’s a great actress.”

Jolie shouldn’t be too bummed out: She took home an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2000 for her role in Girl, Interrupted.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I'm very surprised Angelina didn't get nominated for an Oscar, she was excellent in A Mighty Heart. I guess we'll see if she wins at the SAG awards.
