Gay Rights Marchers Divided on Obama

Oct 11, 2009 - WASHINGTON – Thousands of gay and lesbian activists marched Sunday from the White House to the Capitol, demanding that President Barack Obama keep his promises to allow gays to serve openly in the military and work to end discrimination against gays. Rainbow flags and homemade signs dotted the crowds filling Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House as people chanted "Hey, Obama, let mama marry mama" and "We're out, we're proud, we won't back down." Aug 25, 2009 - Bernie Goldberg's Between Manhattan and Malibu  Subscribe in a reader (BernardGoldberg.com) Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 at 7:58 pm A “Lost” Fact in the “Rathergate” Mess — Part 1 What seems like a long, long time ago Dan Rather was a very powerful force in American journalism.  He not only was the anchorman of the CBS Evening News, he was also the face of the network’s renowned news division — the “Tiffany” network of bigger-than-life legends like Ed Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Eric Sevareid, Mike Wallace and many, many others. That was then.  Now Dan Rather is suing the network that employed him for 44 years, asking for $70 million dollars in damages.  Technically, the lawsuit is about a dry legal issue — breach of contract.  But it is also about something much more personal to Rather:  his legacy.  It is a lawsuit, fundamentally, about saving Dan Rather’s reputation. That reputation took a turn for the worse back in 2004.  As has been widely reported, just 55 days before a very close presidential election, Dan Rather and his producer Mary Mapes put a story on the weekday edition of 60 Minutes that brought on the media equivalent of World War III.  There were accusations that Rather, Mapes, and maybe the entire CBS News Division had set out to deliberately destroy George W. - 12 Comments

Starbucks is un-branding at least three of its Seattle outlets, the first of which just reopened as "15th Avenue Coffee and Tea." The Frank Marshall Davis Network in Hawaii

Aug 20, 2009 - By Andrew Walden July 29, 2008 In a July 14 news release the “Honolulu Community Media Council” (HCMC) denounces Accuracy In Media and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for “shoddy journalism and smear tactics.” HCMC, headed by Chris Conybeare of the University of Hawaii, “finds” that “there is no substance to the claim” that “Frank Marshall Davis was a lifelong Communist and a mentor to (presidential candidate Barack) Obama.” Conybeare may be hoping that nobody else knowing the post-WW II history of Hawaii is willing to talk. Davis, it turns out, was just one member of a network whose works continue to exert influence to this day. Connecting the Dots A faculty member of the UH-West Oahu Center for Labor Education and Research (CLEAR), Conybeare is producer of a many-part PBS series on the history of labor organizing in Hawaii, focusing on the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). - 4 Comments
