Just like everyone else, we’re obsessed with all things Twilight. So imagine our delight when we get to jet over to Vancouver, Canada, to watch the sequel being shot for ourselves! Here are all the behind-the-scenes secrets from the New Moon set (plus a few topless shots of the guys – well, we couldn’t resist)

1 During filming, Kristen was very serious about watching her scenes being played back. Immediately after finishing a scene, she would make her way over to the monitors, and often covered the screen with her robe so that she could watch it alone. Wonder what she thought about her kissing scenes with Robert Pattinson? If we were her, we’d definitely be wanting another take. And another. And another…
2 While we watched, cast and crew filmed scenes for Bella’s high school cafeteria at the David Thompson Secondary School in Vancouver. Weirdly, the school was being used at the time, so as soon as the bell went the corridors filled with hundreds of stampeding students heading for the gym to peer through the glass, desperate to get a glimpse of the famous cast.
3 Bella is pretty reckless in this movie, dirt-biking and jumping off cliffs. But Kristen didn’t do her own stunts. ‘They wouldn’t let me!’ she complains. ‘I wish I could. I got to jump off a little platform about 3ft high for the cliff scene. For the dirt biking, I got pulled on a motorbike that had this big, dorky training wheel on it,’ she laughs.
4 Luckily, the birthday party scene where Bella cuts herself and vampire Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) can’t resist the smell of her blood, wasn’t too gory on set. ‘Vampires don’t need a massive amount of blood to get feisty,’ says Nikki Reed who plays Rosalie. But Jackson got so worked up during the attack he knocked Elizabeth Reaser (Esme) down and scared Kristen Stewart. Rathbone’s co-stars had to physically restrain him during the scene. ‘I was just going for it,’ he explains.
5 We caught Taylor Lautner in a very uncomfortable harness attached to wires on a huge crane. The ex martial arts champion did a lot of his own stunts, and would run, leap and fly 10ft in the air on wires – then stop with a painful-looking jolt. That’s when CGI makes him a werewolf. ‘My character Jacob is the only wolf that can transform in mid-air, he just snaps and all his clothes fly off!’ Taylor says. We’ll look forward to that.
6 We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw how much sweet little Taylor had bulked up to play Jacob in New Moon. His hot new body was the result of some serious training, not to mention a hardcore diet regime. ‘The hardest thing for me was the eating,’ he tells us. ‘I was on 4,000 calories a day and had to shove as much food in my body as possible, and hit the gym five days a week. Even now my trainer is always bringing me snacks between shots.’ We spied Taylor using resistance bands to do strength-training exercises in his downtime to keep those muscles pumped.
7 In New Moon, Edward steps out into the sunlight in order to expose his sparkling skin and thus the Volturi vampire clan to the world. And in this film, Rob’s sparkly skin special effect will be much better than the last one. Director Chris Weitz says, ‘It was very subtle in the first film. This time we made a 3D model of Rob, so we were able to map every move he made and build an effect that really feels like the light is coming from inside him, and there will be lens flare, as if you were looking at a diamond with the sun shining on it.’ Watch out for that 3D model of Rob for sale on eBay soon!

8 In this scene from the film, Taylor really had to suffer. ‘I was shirtless, only wearing shorts. It was 35°F (2°C) outside and I was being drenched in water that was so ice-cold, I was absolutely freezing. Thank God the scene was only four minutes long.’ But Tay, we’re eternally grateful.
9 For the scene where Bella and Jacob go on a date to the movies with the hapless Mike tagging along, The Old Paramount Theatre in Vancouver was used for the exterior shots. To our horror we discovered these days the inside of the theatre is a lap-dancing club. They must have had to shoot the interior shots somewhere else…
10 The school basketball courts were home to wardrobe and make-up trailers, and as they walked to and fro, Rob and Taylor had minders shading them with enormous golfing umbrellas to shield them from prying camera lenses. Says a minder, ‘Paparazzi are always trying to get on set dressed in camouflage, hiding in bushes, leaping out and disrupting shooting. It’s easier just to keep it quiet where Rob and Taylor are.’ We tell them the big brollies are a bit of a giveaway.
11 In Stephenie Meyer’s book, the regal Volturi live in the ancient Italian city of Volterra, a real town in Tuscany, Italy. For the movie, the production crew used Montepulciano, an ancient walled city also in Tuscany. But being medieval, the piazza and city hall gave the director the amazing shot he needed for when Bella races across the fountain to save Edward.
12 The night shoots in Vancouver’s Capilano Park Forest went on until around 4am, and the hardest scenes were Bella’s screaming nightmares about Edward. The crew recreated her entire bedroom in the middle of the woods, Kristen had to sob and scream for hours, and while everyone else wrapped up warm, Taylor Lautner spent most of the shoot with his shirt off. Shame.
13 The story of Twilight is set in Forks, Washington, the rainiest, most cloud-covered place on earth. As vampires can’t go out in the direct sunlight without their skin sparkling and drawing attention to themselves, this is a handy place to live. Unfortunately, Vancouver was so sunny when we were there, Rob couldn’t shoot his exterior scenes. ‘I’d be glinting,’ Rob laughs.

14 We spied Rob having his famously bouffant hair given a quick trim on set. Apparently, this happened every week to 10 days while shooting the movie. Plus, he had his barnet re-styled on-set twice a day by New Moon hairstylist Thom McIntyre, to make sure it remained permanently in its signature tousled state. Diva? Rob? No.
15 In the books, Jacob’s home is a red house, and the production crew found the perfect wild location in the middle of Vancouver’s National Forest. Only problem was, the house was green. ‘It was important to the fan base to keep the red of Jacob’s house. They know it that way, and they wanted it that way. So we ended up painting the whole house red to match the book.’ Hope the owners liked it.
16 Kristen turned 19 while shooting New Moon and celebrated by working all day! Luckily the crew secretly planned a big birthday cake for her. She didn’t know a thing.
17 As Twilight was shot in Portland, Oregon, and New Moon in Vancouver, British Columbia, Bella’s house had to be taken down, moved to Canada, and rebuilt, piece by piece, both the interior and the exterior. But it’s not quite the same as it was in the first movie. There’s a whole new bay window on the side of the house, so Jacob can climb up to her bedroom at night.
18 To kill time, the cast played catch between scenes as Taylor always has a football with him. ‘As soon as I’m done filming I’ll play catch with anybody who will play catch with me,’ he says. ‘Kristen and I play catch all the time and she has a really good arm. She’s extremely accurate.’
19 Kristen nearly got hurt by one of the werewolves. Alex Meraz, who plays Jacob’s tribe member Paul (far left), got carried away and became aggressive towards her in the scene in which Jacob introduces his pack brothers to Bella. Alex says, ‘The wolf pack stays up all night looking for who’s killing people, so I thought it’d be a great idea to stay up for 10 days straight.’ When it came to the scene, he was screaming his lines and grabbed Kristen by the throat. ‘The producers freaked out – no one touches Kristen!’
20 Ashley Greene who plays Alice, the vampire who can see the future, got to drive a real Porsche while shooting in Italy. ‘It was fun,’ says Ashley. ‘I worked with a stuntman before driving it and learned how to do a bunch of things. Then I drove the Porsche in a scene and stopped about 2in from a wall!’

Jackson Rathbone Injured on Set, Still Smiling With Nikki

Jackson Rathbone held an ice pack as he returned to the Eclipse set after a quick trip to the hospital in Vancouver yesterday. He apparently got hurt rehearsing a scene with Kellan Lutz and considering those muscles - that we've gotten to see him working quite hard on - it's no surprise that Mr. Lutz has the ability to cause some damage. Nikki Reed and Elizabeth Reaser were also on set and around to help nurse him back to health. Eclipse involves a lot of fight scenes and most of the cast is going to have to get pretty rough and tumble between the more sensitive moments that have all the rest of us swooning.

I’m told that the band’s tradition is to ask the audience for a word and use that word to make up a song…? Anyway, the word on Saturday was “polygamy”. So the ensuing chorus was:I get what I need from you and you and you. Cute.It was a well guarded event, not too many leaks, and no paps. Other Twilight cast members present included Kellan Lutz, Julia Jones, Ashley Greene, Chaske Spencer, Elizabeth Reaser, Xavier Samuel, and oh yeah, those other two, the only two most people care about – Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson – were spotted smoking on the patio. Twi-Hards will take this to mean they that they were out there alone, slow dancing under the twinkling stars, talking about the magic-ness of their love. Sane folks will understand that smoking patios are usually crowded and the best they could hope for is a hand job behind the umbrella stand. This is Pattinson alone at the end of the night. Los Angeles, CA April 15, 2009 – Principal photography has begun on Summit Entertainment’s THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, it was announced today by Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner reprise their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black. Academy Award-nominee Chris Weitz (THE GOLDEN COMPASS, ABOUT A BOY) is the director. NEW MOON is filming on locations in Vancouver, BC and Tuscany, Italy.

Also rejoining the movie are Ashley Greene as Alice, Peter Facinelli as Carlisle, Elizabeth Reaser as Esme, Kellan Lutz as Emmett, Nikki Reed as Rosalie, Jackson Rathbone as Jasper , Edi Gathegi as Laurent and Rachelle Lafevre as Victoria.

New cast members include the legendary Volturi, a venerable coven of vampires who weigh and impose the laws of the vampire world, as well as two new members of the Quileute Indian Nation. The Volturi include Charlie Bewley as Demetri, Jamie Campbell Bower as Caius, Daniel Cudmore as Felix, Christopher Heyerdahl as Marcus, all Volturi enforcers. Dakota Fanning plays Jane, a high ranking and powerful Volturi member and Cameron Bright is Alec, her brother. Noot Seer plays Volturi member Heidi. Michael Sheen plays Aro, the Volturi leader. Graham Greene appears as Harry Clearwater, Quileute tribal leader and old friend of Bella’s father Charlie. Tinsel Korey is Emily, the fiancé of Sam Uley.

In NEW MOON, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love Edward (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and she finds her loyalties tested.

Jamie Campbell Bower was last seen in Tim Burton’s “Sweeney Todd” and is the lead singer of the band The Darling Buds. Daniel Cudmore played Colossus in the “X-Men” films, “X2” and “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Dakota Fanning was last seen in Summit Entertainment’s sci-fi thriller “Push” and provided the lead voice in the animated feature “Coraline.” Graham Greene earned an Academy Award nomination for his work in “Dances With Wolves,” and has appeared in such films as “The Green Mile,” “Die Hard: With A Vengeance” and “Transamerica.” Chrisopher Heyerdahl has appeared in such films as “The Chronicles of Riddick,” “Catwoman” and “Blade: Trinity.” Tinsel Korey has worked on numerous films and television shows, from “Into The West” to “The Lookout,” opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt. She is also a singer/songwriter. Vancouver-born Noot Seer began modeling at age 13 and has lived in New York, Barbados, Guyana and New Zealand. twilight casting

what did you think of the casting? did you love the choices or were you wondering about them? did their performances win you over if you were on the fence? here are some of my thoughts on the main characters...

kristen stewart as bella: the bella i had imagined...understated pretty, but to me she didn't seem as insecure as the character. though it didn't bother me, i did notice the sputtering i read people complaining about. does anyone know if she does that in other movies or was this specific to this character?

robert pattinson as edward: perfect! he made me swoon which is is the same effect the character had on me as i read the series.

billy burke as charlie: good casting! not the charlie i had imagined physically, but loved his performance and comedic timing.

taylor lautner as jacob: bad wig, but i think he will be okay. but with short hair, he really looks like a baby!

ashley greene as alice: again perfect! loved her performance and her cute little theme music.

nikki reed as rosalie: though i thought she captured rosalise's temperament, not the rosalie i had pictured. nikki reed is gorgeous as her tanned brunette self.

kellan lutz as emmett: a solid choice.

jackson rathbone as jasper: not sure though i think he has potential. i wish they would have at least mentioned his power.

peter facinelli as carlisle: liked his performance, not sure about him as a blonde though.

elizabeth reaser as esme: not sure, i hope for more cullen time in general in the upcoming sequels.

the villians: victoria was perfect! liked james and laurent as well. looking forward to more of rachelle lafevre and edi gathegi in new moon. they didn't get enough screen time.

the teenage friends: i thought they were good and spot on as goofy fun loving teens, especially mike newton and anna kendrick.

Vampires and the poor human beings who love them have been a hot onscreen item this season, as evidenced by HBO's lurid hit series "True Blood" and the marvelous Swedish import "Let the Right One In." For less discriminating palettes, there's the much-anticipated "Twilight," a disappointingly anemic tale of forbidden love that should satiate the pre-converted but will bewilder and underwhelm viewers who haven't devoured Stephenie Meyer's bestselling juvie chick-lit franchise. Built-in femme fanbase will lend this Summit Entertainment release some serious B.O. bite, with Robert Pattinson's turn as an undead heartthrob keeping repeat biz at a steady pump.
Having showed a real feel for the perilous social and emotional terrain of adolescent girlhood in her 2003 debut, "Thirteen," Catherine Hardwicke seemed as good a director as any to steer this maiden adaptation of Meyer's junior-Anne-Rice phenomenon. (Three more novels -- "New Moon," "Eclipse" and "Breaking Dawn" -- have been released since "Twilight's" publication in 2005, and the movie is nothing if not a prelude to future bigscreen sequels.)

But even with angsty rock songs, lurching camerawork and emo-ish voiceover at her disposal, Hardwicke can't get inside the head of her young protagonist, Isabella "Bella" Swan (Kristen Stewart); consequently, Bella's decision to get hot and heavy with a hot-and-hungry vampire, far from seeming like an act of mad, transgressive passion, comes across as merely stupid and ill-considered. The result is a supernatural romance in which the supernatural and romantic elements feel rushed, unformed and insufficiently motivated, leaving audiences with little to do but shrug and focus on the eye-candy.

Which is what Bella does when she first meets the brooding, intoxicatingly handsome Edward Cullen (Pattinson) at her new high school in Forks, Wash. Bella, a moody, intelligent teen who's just moved from Phoenix to live with her police-chief dad (Billy Burke), is an outsider in this dreary little Pacific Northwest town. So are Edward and his four equally striking (if unnaturally pallid) siblings, who keep to themselves, go on regular camping trips and have an odd habit of never eating.

Bella finds herself utterly transfixed by Edward. (Judging by the screaming tweens in the audience at the screening caught, she's not alone.) Yet devoid of the novel's first-person narration, the chain of events laid out in Melissa Rosenberg's screenplay -- Edward's initial and inexplicable hostility toward Bella, his habit of rescuing her from contrived endangerment scenarios, their playfully barbed flirtation, his revelation of his identity as a self-controlled but still-lethal bloodsucker and, finally, their mutual surrender to their feelings -- proceeds with none of the inner logic necessary even for a tale of the fantastic.

Admittedly, it's a relief that Rosenberg dispenses with Meyer's often embarrassingly overripe prose ("His hair was dripping wet, disheveled ... his dazzling face was friendly, open, a slight smile on his flawless lips"), and pic's selective rewriting of the rules of vampire lore (no coffins, no garlic, no fatal aversion to sunlight) does hold interest. There's a fleeting moment when the two leads -- standing together in a secluded glade, their bodies circled by the camera -- come close to capturing the tale's lush, swooning romanticism.

Stewart (seen recently and most impressively in "Into the Wild") makes Bella earthy, appealing and slightly withdrawn, and British thesp Pattinson (who registered poignantly as the ill-fated Cedric Diggory in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") is every inch the deadly dreamboat. But as helmed by Hardwicke, the actors' early, awkward interactions feel particularly forced, and the script gives Stewart virtually nothing with which to convince the audience of her transcendent love for a guy who'd just as soon drink her blood as jump her bones.

Burke steals a few scenes as Bella's quietly dependable dad, as does the reliably sharp-witted Anna Kendrick as Bella's busybody friend, Jessica. Questionable casting of some of Bella's other classmates may rile purists, though Hardwicke and Rosenberg generate some laughs from the high school setting. Pic duly introduces Jacob (Taylor Lautner), a Native American youth who looks to rival Edward for Bella's affections in future outings.

In an unwise departure from the book, pic dispels rather than increases the tension by showing random vampire attacks by a sinister trio (Cam Gigandet, Rachelle Lefevre, Edi Gathegi), headed toward a showdown with Edward and his brood. Chase-thriller endgame seems to sputter to a halt when it's barely begun.

Visual effects, used to convey the vampires' superhuman strength, agility and resistance to gravity, are a mixed bag. Shot in moody, washed-out tones by Hardwicke's regular lenser, Elliot Davis, pic makes the most of its Oregon locations .
