Do you like any Avon or Mark products?

Each spring I make an order to Avon to get my kid's sublock/bugspray (which is fantastic, I blogged about it in my group here http://teamsugar.com/group/186693/blog/1728887 ) But I never order anything else. Probably because the last time I ordered cosmetics from Avon was about 11 years ago. I ordered a couple of lipsticks from a woman who worked in my office. When they came, the shades were kind of orange-gy and I threw them out. I realize all these years later I should probably give them another shot and try a few new things. I was looking at their website and am intrigued by these ergonomic makeup brushes avon brush Has anyone tried them? It looks like the handle would feel nice in your hand. So does anyone have any favorites from Avon or Mark that you suggest I pick up?

Well, I don't know about you but I just bought this product. I've seen it advertised everywhere and now Allure magazine has rated it as being very good, so I finally got it from avon.com. It wasn't expensive like I thought it would be which is great. I am only 25, but I want to keep my youthful face as long as possible so i try to get ahead by using products like this. Decades later, women pilots from World War II get their due

It took them more than 60 years to be recognized after their government attempted to hide their service, but on Wednesday, hundreds of female pilots who flew missions during World War II finally got their due.

More than 1,000 civilian female pilots or WASPS – Women Airforce Service Pilots – were given the Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony on Capitol Hill. The “strength, spark, and unprecedented moxie” of female pilots helped fill the pilot shortage stateside as men were sent overseas to fly combat missions, Rep. Susan Davis (D) of California, said at the ceremony.

These women volunteers, many of whom have since died, paid for their own pilot training and served the military during the early years of World War II in hopes of joining the military. They tested and ferried aircraft, freeing men for combat flying.

Instead, two years later, the program ended and the women were summarily sent home when the military didn’t need them anymore. Their service was effectively sealed from the public for years. Then the US Air Force announced in 1976 that female pilots would begin flying jets for the first time, essentially negating the WASP program.

That angered many of the female pilots, who promptly organized an effort to have their story told. Later, their records were opened, and last year President Obama signed a bill to honor the women with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor Congress can bestow. About 300 of the pilots who are still alive were invited to Washington for the event.

“All we ask is that our overlooked history would no longer be a missing chapter” in the history of aviation and the US, said Deanie Parrish, who accepted the gold medals on behalf of all WASPS.

Many of the women said they never thought what they did was a big deal and they never sought the recognition. On the other hand, the government’s attempts to deny their service within the military prompted efforts to push for greater awareness of what they did.

“They didn’t think it was a big deal,” said Robert Bain, whose mother, Susie Bain, a WASP, traveled from Austin, Texas, to attend the event Wednesday.

Mr. Bain recalls a story his mother tells about the first time she flew solo. It took her three times to land, in part because she had not been properly trained. Years later, she would marvel that she had become a pilot and her husband, who tried to fly for the military, flunked out, Robert Bain recalled jokingly.

Barry Smith, a WASP from Avon Park, Fla., recalls how so few people knew about the program.

“Nobody knew about us,” she said after the ceremony Wednesday. “No one knew I was flying this twin engine planes all over the United States and I was a civilian.”

For many of the WASPs, there is a hint of can-do spirit mixed with an early feminist pride. Ms. Barry said she flew planes as a test pilot, essentially serving as a guinea pig.

“I tested them for the men to fly,” she said, catching herself in the joy she still takes in ribbing her male pilot counterparts. “I had to add that.”

Recipes from the kitchen of Ann Mah

SALT AND PEPPER SHRIMP SALAD

1 lb. shrimp (about 12), peeled, cleaned and patted dry
1 tablespoon minced garlic
¼ cup minced green onions
2 tablespoons pine nuts, lightly toasted
2 to 3 tablespoons dry cocktail sherry (pale)
2 tablespoons salt-sugar-pepper mixture
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Olive oil for stir frying

4 cups arugula or mixed salad greens, washed and spun dry
½ tablespoon balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon sesame oil

Salt-sugar-pepper mixture:
2 tablespoons sugar
4 tablespoons salt
6 tablespoons ground black pepper

-Toss arugula or salad greens with the vinegar and oils and distribute evenly to four salad plates.
-Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a wok or sauté pan until smoking.
-Toss the shrimp with the salt-sugar-pepper mixture (about 2 tablespoons) and add at once to the hot pan.
-As the prawns cook, sprinkle them with 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Add more oil if needed. Turn the shrimp and repeat with another 1 tablespoon of cornstarch; the cooking process only takes a few minutes.
-When the shrimp have just turned pink, add the minced garlic and toss. Add the green onions and toss. Add just enough sherry to create a sauce that barely coats the prawns.
-Remove from heat.
-Add the pine nuts.
-Distribute 3 prawns per salad plate. Serve immediately.

In Beijing, Peking duck has been prepared the same way since the imperial era. The delicacy is so embedded within the culture that a specific kind of duck is bred exclusively for use in the dish. After being scalded, dried, and roasted for hours in a wood-burning oven, the bird is ceremoniously sliced by the cook directly in front of the diners.

Culinary traditions like this one are central to every culture around the world. For this reason, food has the power to forge connections between strangers when language fails. In Ann Mah’s debut novel, KITCHEN CHINESE (February 9, 2010; Avon), Isabelle Lee learns this crucial lesson when she trades the New York magazine world for the Beijing magazine world.

Despite being Chinese-American, the move to Beijing proves difficult for Isabelle considering that she only knows the kind of Chinese that is spoken in the kitchen. Luckily, this includes the language of food and Isabelle secures the position of restaurant critic at Beijing NOW, an expat magazine. Though lonely the first few weeks in her new home, she finds that conversation and laughter over shared plates of spicy Szechuan specialties, pork and chive dumplings, and bottomless Mongolian hot pots soon transform locals and other expats into friends.

Along with culture shock, Isabelle faces the challenge of reacquainting herself with her older sister, Claire, who lives the glamorous expat lifestyle as a high-powered attorney. While their personalities couldn’t be more different, Isabelle soon suspects that she is not the only one who ran away to China.

After many moments of cultural confusion, Isabelle can't help but wonder if moving to Beijing was a mistake. Or is this frenetic, vibrant city of the future the perfect place to figure out who she really is?
