WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Senate passed groundbreaking legislation Thursday that would make it a federal crime to assault an individual because of his or her sexual orientation or gender identity.
The expanded federal hate crimes law now goes to President Obama's desk. Obama has pledged to sign the measure, which was added to a $680 billion defense authorization bill.

'Reform' bill's true cost is twice advertised price
By JEFFREY H. ANDERSO
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is touting the Senate’s newest health-care bill as costing $849 billion over 10 years. But this uses the same accounting trick as past versions: 99 percent of the costs don’t kick in until the fifth year of that “10 year” period.

Thought this provided interesting context to a claim that keeps coming up
In Washington, it's not unusual for lawmakers to get as heated about the arcane rules of Congress as they do about the substance of a bill.
Such was the case with a plan to slow climate change passed by the House of Representatives on June 26, 2009. Republican lawmakers not only opposed cap-and-trade because they fear it will be too expensive, but they were angry that they'd had only a few hours to vet 300 pages of last-minute changes to the already massive legislation.

The Absolutely Worst Bill Ever
By Peter Ferrara on 11.11.09 @ 6:08AM
"The Worst Bill Ever." That is the title the always calm and rational Wall Street Journal put on its editorial on November 1 about the government health care takeover bill that passed the House last week on virtually a party line vote, 220-215. But even this label doesn't fully communicate the outright assault on the American people involved in this legislation.

Will Congress Read Bills Before Voting? From Political HotSheet

Last month, when Republicans tried to stall energy legislation with hundreds of amendments, Democrats hired a speed reader to get through them all. Now, with Democratic leadership barreling through its hefty agenda this summer, it looks as if the speed reader's services may be needed once more.

Lights Out
By W. James Antle, III
Tomorrow House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to bring the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade emissions bill to the floor for a vote. It will be the biggest political risk of her speakership and the first broad-based tax increase of the Obama years.

Okay, so she didn’t cry. But Hillary Clinton certainly got personal while filming the Tyra Banks Show — engaging in a frank discussion about husband Bill Clinton’s infamous fling with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
“I really had to dig down deep and think hard about what was right for me, what was right for my family,” the Democratic presidential hopeful told Tyra Banks during her apperance taped Monday and set to air Friday.

The Madoff Bill
By Dennis Prager
I write this column without any illusion that it will reverse America's current movement toward socialism. Rather I am writing it primarily so that future generations will not be able to say that the radical and destructive nature of the Obama/Democratic Party's so-called stimulus plan was unknown at the time. I am writing this so that my children will know that their father vigorously opposed it and why.
