"The entire length of the 5 freeway between Sacramento and Los Angeles is lined with orchards and farms - just beautiful to behold and about 8% of the fruit produce for the nation comes from these orchards. Orchards which are now dead and being destroyed because water has been cut off to the orchards and farms in the Central Valley. Yes, there is a drought in California, but the reservoirs are full - the water is just not getting to the farms and orchards, it is going to the fish."

SEIU may be linked to ultimatum on withholding stimulus funds
California officials say the union may have influenced a federal requirement that a pay cut be reversed for home healthcare workers.
By Evan Halper (LA Times)
Reporting from Sacramento -- Officials in the governor's office say a politically powerful union may have had inappropriate influence over the Obama administration's decision to withhold billions of dollars in federal stimulus money from California if the state does not reverse a scheduled wage cut for the labor group's workers.
The officials say they are particularly troubled that the Service Employees International Union, which lobbied the federal government to step in, was included in a conference call in which state and federal officials reviewed the wage cut and the terms of the stimulus package.

Californians voted Tuesday to ban same-sex marriage, setting the stage for a court battle over the legitimacy of roughly 16,000 such marriages – including those of celeb couples Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi and Star Trek's George Takei and Brad Altman.
With nearly 96 percent of the votes counted, controversial Proposition 8 passed by just over 52 percent (The initiative had drawn widespread opposition from Hollywood celebrities, including Brad Pitt, director Steven Spielberg, and even California's Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger).
