LOS ANGELES – Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is trying to quell the escalating debate over who should pick up the estimated $1.4 million tab for police, traffic control and other services related to Michael Jackson's memorial service.
Villaraigosa, who was vacationing in South Africa a week ago when more than 17,000 fans flocked to downtown Los Angeles to watch the public memorial, asserted Monday that the city will pay. He said he will not ask the Jackson family or AEG Live, the owner of the Staples Center where the event was held, to help the city recoup its expenses, and he lambasted a city Web site set up to request donations.

The big family trip or summer vacation serves as an escape from work, school and, in some instances, New Jersey. For many this year, it just isn't happening.

'Reform' bill's true cost is twice advertised price
By JEFFREY H. ANDERSO
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is touting the Senate’s newest health-care bill as costing $849 billion over 10 years. But this uses the same accounting trick as past versions: 99 percent of the costs don’t kick in until the fifth year of that “10 year” period.

My mother had beautiful, flawless skin. Wherever she went, she was always admired for this feature. Although I wasn't lucky enough to inherit her skin, I did inherit her beuty secrets. One product that she used in her regular beauty routine was good old witch hazel.

Once upon a time, Joe Lieberman was interesting—not always correct, in my view, but interesting. He was interesting because he thought for himself. On most issues, most senators line up pretty automatically with their party.
