A young Juanita Rarick found refuge at the Howe Library in Albany's South End during the Great Depression. There, the girl could escape the instability of the world outside.
"I'd sit there and read quite a bit, maybe a couple of hours," an 88-year-old Rarick told me last year when I wrote about the Howe.

I always daydream about having a huge room of a library in my future home. Apart from miles of books and built-in shelves to the ceiling and possibly a second floor above the main one, my dream library would include the following and more:
-Large rectangular table or 2
-comfortable chair to sit at the tables
-comfortable lounge chairs or sofas
-atlas/dictionary stands
-at least one computer and desk set up to be able to access scanned documents or articles, and of course have access to my catalogue
-book carts (to take stuff off the shelves and wheel it to where I am sitting next to a computer or table)
-steps
-some sort of hidden door/room to be accessed from one of the bookshelves
here are a few things I love:
here are a few pictures of great libraries:

We have 2 of these Norrebo shelves from IKEA that we use to store part of our library collection. Although they are 2 sided, which means we can put books on both sides, there's not nearly enough room for our books on them.

Ok, I am so stealing from the great mind of my bestest friend. She works in a public library and OH the stories she can tell! She is super funny when she tells them, and since I too work in the public sector I know exactly where she is coming from.

A new federal law may ban children from U.S libraries. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act requires all children's products to be tested for lead. Since trace amounts of lead can be found in some printer's inks, especially in older booksl, the law may force libraries to exclude kids until every book is tested.

Whenever I sign out books at my local library (yes, I still do this), I always have to remember to record the due dates in my online calendar - or else I'm a late fees prime target. Thankfully there's a new Mac OS X application called library books that can track all the library books you've borrowed online.
Library Books connects to your library's cataloger and downloads the list of books you have checked out.

We finally made our way to the Library of Congress this weekend. My husband has been bugging me to go. I had never expected it to look this beautiful...

Now, iTunes 7 offers a new way to back up your iTunes library, playlists, and iTunes Store purchases for safekeeping. The "Back Up to Disc" feature saves your media to a blank disc (CD or DVD) and once backed up, iTunes can use your backup disc(s) to automatically restore your iTunes library.
- From the "File" menu, choose "Back Up to Disc".

After a 2006 tornado ravaged her tiny Arkansas town, Marmaduke Elementary School librarian Lena Hood felt sick as she surveyed the debris-covered stacks. "It was so sad," links of londonLena, 63.
