Source: Ryan Gosling Still Loves Rachel McAdams

While former couple Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling made headlines this summer after a little bit of PDA in Toronto, a source tells PEOPLE the two actors are both "openly single" right now.

Gosling "is still close to McAdams's family and he still speaks to Rachel, but they are both openly single," the source says. "He still loves Rachel and Rachel still loves him, but the timing is off and they can't make each other happy right now."

The two actors are staying busy during their time apart. McAdams, 32, is currently in London filming Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. In the film, she plays Irene Adler, one of the Holmes series’ most famous female characters.

The actress also took a break from filming Monday to take in some shopping in London's West End, where she browsed England's latest fashion offerings.

Meanwhile, Gosling, 28, spends his time in L.A., where he has settled into an almost weekly deejay gig at L.A.'s Bardot. (McAdams stopped by his debut gig back in July.) The venture has also inspired him to branch out for a career in music.

"Gosling is all about making music because he's putting out a record," the source says. "He spends a lot of time recording."

But not having McAdams in his life isn't keeping Gosling down.

"He has been flirting with a lot of girls in L.A. and weighing the options!" says the source.

Ryan Gosling made his deejay debut Tuesday night at Green Door lounge in Hollywood, with a surprising guest in the crowd – his ex-girlfriend Rachel McAdams.

Arriving at 9 p.m., the actor settled into what is said to be a weekly gig at the lounge's Tuesday jazz night. McAdams arrived later "supporting Ryan," says a Gosling pal.

"They talked when he was away from the deejay stand," says the friend. "They really looked like good pals. He seemed happy to see her."

For Gosling, deejaying is "a pretty new thing for him," says the friend. "He's been messing around. He's really into music, and he's a fan of the night – and here he is."

Spinning tunes from the '40s and '50s, Gosling, 27, was dressed from the era, sporting a white T, black pants and motorcycle jacket.

Along with McAdams other celebs on hand were Catherine Keener, Shane West and hockey ace Sean Avery, who chatted up an enamored Keener.

Once the live jazz band took the stage, Gosling mingled with friends and hung out on the patio.

Canadian cutie Rachel McAdams is dating actor Josh Lucas, reports the NYDN.

Rachel, 30, and Josh, 37, were spotted smooching at Tuesday night’s Inaugural Purple Ball in Washington D.C.

“They were so lovey-dovey,” a spy tells the paper, “nibbling on each other’s necks, gazing into each other’s eyes and doing a lot of flirty touching.”

Seems like Rachel completely over Ryan Gosling! This past August, Ryan and Rachel tried to make it work one last time.

The Notebook is a 2004 romance film directed by Nick Cassavetes based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks.

Plot:

In a modern day nursing home, an elderly man named Noah, but called "Duke", begins to read a love story from his notebook about a couple named Allie and Noah, and Noah's undying love for his wife Allie who suffers from senile dementia. Before her disease intensified, Allie wrote their love story down in a notebook. She gave it to him with instructions to read it to her on days she couldn't remember, promising that her memory would come back as Noah read her their love story.

Critical reception:

The film received mixed reviews from critics. The review aggregate at Rotten Tomatoes reported that 51% of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 142 reviews. Metacritic reported the film had an average score of 53 out of 100, based on 34 reviews.

The film was far more popular with women than with men. On the IMDb Women's Top 50 Films it is #29, but men only scored it 7.4/10, far off the equivalent list.

Box office performance:

The film was released June 25, 2004 in the United States and Canada and grossed $13.4 million in 2,303 theaters its opening weekend, ranking #4 at the box office. The film grossed a total of $115.6 million worldwide - $81 million in the United States and Canada and $34.6 million elsewhere.
