Tilda Swinton has an open marriage

“Michael Clayton” and “Chronicles of Narnia” star Tilda Swinton has been enjoying an open marriage with her husband, playwright John Byrne, for quite a while. Tilda, 47, is married to Byrne, 67, with whom she has twin boys. But while she was filming “Narnia,” Tilda met 29-year-old Sandro Kopp, an actor and artist. She was very attracted to him, and with the blessing of her husband, Swinton now divides her time between the two men. Tilda takes her younger man with her to movie shoots, premieres and awards ceremonies, and even brings him to the home she shares with Byrne and the children. Apparently, Tilda’s husband isn’t so pleased with all the attention their arrangement has been getting.

If you didn’t have a Valentine Thursday, then perhaps you can blame Tilda Swinton: The greedy swine has two.

The Academy Award nominee is expected to attend the ceremony next weekend with her new guy, German artist Sandro Kopp, 29. Swinton, 47, played the White Queen and he a centaur-extra in 2005’s “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

But the ethereal British actress is also still with John Byrne, 67, the father of her 10-year-old twins, Honor and Xavier.

Swinton attended Sunday’s BAFTA awards - the British Oscars - with Kopp and her kids. Then they all went back to the large house she shares with Byrne in Scotland, where he greeted them at the door.

Questioned by a reporter about who gets the bedroom in that arrangement, Byrne growled, “I wouldn’t encourage you to ask anything like that.”

Byrne has also been quoted as saying that he and Swinton are “the best of chums” and that, “We love our children and our children love us. The rest is business.”

Open marriages fascinate me. On paper, they sometimes seem like they could really work for everyone, but I’ve rarely seen it happen in real life. Somebody always ends up getting hurt– after all, these are human beings we’re talking about. It doesn’t sound like Tilda’s husband is all that enthusiastic about the arrangement, but doesn’t want to lose his wife or break up the family. And Tilda? Well, she’s got the solid, older man at home taking care of their sons, and the yummy younger man to travel the world with. Sounds like a plan to me. But who knows how long it will all last?

Best Supporting Actress

Supporting acting nominees are great because they range from a mind blowing, one or two scene performance (Ruby Dee) to a strong acting presence throughout the whole film (Amy Ryan, Tilda Swinton). This year there is really anyone's game, as there are five fantastic actresses nominated. The nominees are:

Cate Blanchett in I'm Not There
Ruby Dee in American Gangster
Saoirse Ronan in Atonement
Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone
Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton

Prediction
Cate Blanchett. There's a lot of debate as to whether it will be her or Ruby Dee, but she literally transforms to play Jude, one of the Bob Dylan incarnates from I'm Not There, and probably the one closest to the actual Dylan. It was incredible to watch. Dee had all of three scenes, and only one in which you see real emotion, and I can't imagine the Academy awarding such a small performance.

What Should Win
Tilda Swinton. Her performance has been sorely overlooked, but is absolutely incredible. The film opens with her in a stall sweating profusely and looking terrified. Watching how she gets to this state is just amazing.

Burn After Reading is an upcoming comedy film, set for a September 12, 2008 release, starring John Malkovich, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt, and made by Joel and Ethan Coen. According to the Coens the plot will focus on the world of the CIA, physical fitness in Washington, D.C., and internet dating. The film is the follow up to the Academy Award winning No Country For Old Men and has been described by Tilda Swinton as ... "a kind of monster caper movie. All of us are monsters - like, true monsters. It's ridiculous. It's much lighter than 'No Country for Old Men."

Michael Clayton is an Academy Award-winning dramatic legal thriller written and directed by Tony Gilroy, produced by Sydney Pollack, and starring George Clooney, Tom Wilkinson, and Tilda Swinton (who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress). It chronicles the attempts of attorney Michael Clayton to cope with a colleague's apparent mental breakdown and corruption within a major client of his law firm.

This is an excellent film. The acting was fantastic. George Clooney was as taut as I've ever seen him. He reminds me more and more of Carey Grant as he gets older. Tom Wilkinson was great as a brilliant but troubled lawyer who has cracked under the pressure of being on the wrong side. His performance as an unmedicated bipolar person was dead on. Tilda Swinton deserved her award. Her character, a council for the big, evil corporation that had driven Wilkinson's character to the edge, was one of the most compelling of the film. Every time she was on screen, you could actually feel her disgust with herself and her fear and anxiety.

The plot was good. No real holes that I could see. It made for some moments of genuine suspense. There were some slow moments, but the build up was good and the payoff made it worth it. Great writing.

My only complaint, and it's a small one, is the chronology. For dramatic effect, they would show an event and then show the events leading up to it. This is very effective in some movies (like Momento), however, I felt this movie didn't need it. I think that the plot was compelling enough to stand on it's own, without any tricks. It wasn't even that it didn't work, but it was unnecessary. There was even one scene that I felt would have been more effective had we not already seen the outcome.

That's the only thing that bugged me about the movie and like I said, it's a very minor flaw. All and all this was an excellent film that was deserving, in my humble opinion, of it's Best Picture nod. I recommend this film.

#30/39 - Michael Clayton

I saw this movie in theaters two weekends ago, and then again during my Best Picture nominee day yesterday.

Michael Clayton (George Clooney) is a fixer for a prestigious law firm who is sent to clean up a mess with one of it’s largest clients and longest running cases, U North. The firm’s leading attorney has recently lost his mind and has started to do rather crazy things, but Clayton starts to wonder how far gone he really is as he learns more about the case and which side he’s on. After watching the trailer and reading many plot descriptions, I went in fully expecting to be bored and completely lost during this film. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Not only was I able to follow it with no problem, but the plot didn’t get murky at all, as expected. It was very clear, concise, and incredibly suspenseful. I loved it the first time I saw it, and the second time it only got better. This is easily one of my favorites amongst the Best Picture nominees. The performances are incredible and every nomination this film got was very deserved. During the Best Picture screening (for which we had a great crowd), people laughed in all the right places, cheered, and applauded as the credits rolled. If you’ve been put off at all from trailers or other reviews (which I definitely was), go see it for yourself and develop your own opinion. This film is fantastic and easily one of the best films I've seen this year. Unfortunately, as I’ve said before, this is going to be one of those films that gets a ton of nominations and wins nothing. Nearly every category it’s nominated in has a distinct front runner to take the award.

Nominations:

Best Picture
It’s in great company here and ties with No Country as my second favorite nominee (I just love Juno), but No Country is easily more Best Picture material than anything else here.

Best Director – Tony Gilroy
For a first time director, this is a great place to be. He won’t win this year, but if he continues to progress from here I don’t doubt he’ll have a statue soon enough.

Best Actor – George Clooney
Everybody knows that Clooney can do no wrong. Here’s another great performance from him, but he’s said so himself that it would be a crime if this award goes to anyone but Day-Lewis.

Best Supporting Actor – Tom Wilkinson
If Javier Bardem wasn’t in this category this year, Wilkinson would have this category locked. He is amazing, but unfortunately won’t be taking this home.

Best Supporting Actress – Tilda Swinton
If this film wins any awards tonight, this is where it will be. Swinton is fantastic in this film, her performance in the final scene is just ground breaking. I think she’ll fall into my “Should Win, but Won’t” category though, as I think this race is between front runners Cate Blanchett and Ruby Dee.

Best Score
Didn’t notice the score much on the first viewing, but the second time I watched it I listened for it. It’s good, but Atonement dominates here, in my opinion.

Best Original Screenplay
Here's another lock of the night with Juno, but this script is very well written. Great nomination, but likely won't win.

The most recent DVD I've watched was "Michael Clayton." I tend to really enjoy George Clooney, and I love legal thrillers, so this seemed like it would be right up my ally. And, to an extent it was.

Briefly, the movie is the story of a "fixer," the person in a law firm who's main purpose is to "clean up" any messes that occur - whether its arranging local counsel for an important client or trying to minimize the damage if something starts to go wrong in a case, which, of course, it does. The case in question has been underway for a number of years, and the lead attorney for the defense, Tom Wilkenson - in fine, tragic form - is having a breakdown. The firm calls in the titular Clayton, played by George Clooney, to prevent any damage and help get the case back on track. Only Clayton starts to believe that maybe there is something behind the lead attorney's concerns.

It's an interesting story, with enough twists and turns to keep any legal thriller fan content, but Clooney's performance is oddly wooden. Part of that may be that he's trying to show that Clayton, while desperately needing his job, is also tired of wallowing in the mud of it. Instead of coming off as conflicted, however, Clooney's character comes across as flat. Fortunately, many of the supporting performances - especially Tilda Swinton in her Oscar-winning role - are quite strong and held my interest quite well.

"Michael Clayton" feels like a movie that should be "based on a true story," but isn't, and as a result, the movie feels - to me, anyway - a bit contrived. That doesn't mean that the story wasn't good, however - it was - but it just didn't have the same punch of an "Erin Brockovich."

I would say overall that this is a film worth seeing, but waiting until it either gets to a lower rental fee or is available on HBO, Showtime or another cable movie-channel.
