After making millions of phone calls and knocking on millions of doors to elect Barack Obama, the nation's labor unions have begun a new campaign: to get the new president and Congress to pass legislation that would make it easier for workers to unionize.
Unions, delighted that they will have a friend in the White House after eight years of fighting President Bush, also plan to push for universal health coverage and a huge stimulus program to create jobs and counter the downturn.
"Our major priority in the short and long term," said Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, "is to get the economy working for Americans who work."

Union Power
I see a lot of liberal blogs crowing that Obama's really taking it to the hedge funds who are holding out on the Chrysler bankruptcy. Hedge fund managers, you see, have a civic duty to lose large amounts of other peoples' money in order to ensure that the UAW makes as few sacrifices as possible in a bankruptcy.
Here's the thing: hedge fund managers don't care what the public thinks.

Tom Hanks has joined the calls for America’s acting unions to approve a deal with studios to end the threat of an actors’ strike this summer.
Actors are threatening walkouts at the end of June if talks between the unions and major film studios fail to resolve a dispute over pay and conditions.
And now Hanks has added his name to an email petition urging members of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) to accept a deal offered by Hollywood chiefs.

Union Square — the soapbox, front porch and crunchy granola bar of New York City — has been witness to many curious things.

Last night my husband mentioned that Obama signed an executive order that said only unions could perform work that was being paid for by the Stimulus package. Has anyone else heard this? I haven't had a chance to research this yet so I wanted to know if you all had heard anything.

Despite a plea in February by George Clooney and fellow Oscar winners Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep to avert an actors' strike that could once again shut down the industry, the two Hollywood unions representing performers suddenly split this weekend rather than join forces, as had been hoped for.
On Saturday, just prior to a board meeting set to establish a joint negotiating strategy, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists suspended its bargaining alliance with the larger Screen Actors Guild, The New York Times reports.
The actors' current contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers expires on June 30.

There’s all levels of crazy when it comes to actors. There’s a little kooky, then there’s the people that get a little too into character, the method actors, and finally the Britney Spears level of actually certifiable. Randy Quaid, brother of much more famous actor Dennis Quaid, is closer to the Britney Spears end of things.

How much to do you believe Unions are playing in our economic problems?
John Stossel on FOX news said he feels for every one person they help, it hurts three others.
Some people think that the "prevailing wage" which Unions demand has undermined their effectiveness in an ability to provide a product at a reasonable price.

After decades of political instability, poverty and uncertanty has Brazil finally hit her stride? We all know that Brazilians know how to party and play (football) but can they roll with the G8 and give them a run for their money? In 2001 Goldmen Sachs placed Brazil with Russia, India and China as the economies that would come to dominate the world.
Some may find it queer to place a country with a growth rate as skimpy as its swim suits, an economic fragility that consistantly suffered with any financial crisis, chronic political instability and a history of squandering economic potential could have so effectively put those wose behind them to pave the way for such a prosperous future. China is said to lead the world out of our currant economic down turn with Brazil hot on their heals. Brazil did not avoid the down turn but was among the last in and the first out. Their economy is growing at a rate of 5% annualy and will pick up in the short term as new deep sea oil fields come online. Brazil also enjoys a food and mineral trade with many Asian countries.
Sometime after 2014 Brazil is scheduled to become the worlds 5th largest economy saying to Great Britan and France uhm excuse me I beleive that's my seat. In many ways Brazil is said to outclass the other up and comers (Chine, India and Russia). Unlike China and Russia it is a democracy. Unlike India it has no insurgent, ethnic, religious hostility or unfriendly neighbors. Unlike Russia it exports more than oil and arms and treats it's investors with respect. Is that code for arss kissing?
