Rob Corddry Scores Deal With Warner Bros. For His Own Show

Rob Corddry, one of my favorite comedic actors who's usually relegated to bit parts in movies, has struck a deal with Warner Bros. to get his own sitcom.

Corddry will create, executive produce and star in the TV show, which he describes as an "unconventional family comedy" set in a "weird world that doesn't run by an exact rule."

The comedian got his start on The Daily Show and has made movies like What Happens in Vegas watchable. Though he has tried his hand at sitcoms before (the short-lived "The Winner" in 2007), I hope this idea sticks - my primetime lineup could always use some more funny.

Cool Job: Pete Hottelet, Creator of the Real Sex Panther

Pete Hottelet has never believed in doing work that doesn’t make you happy. So when he got the idea to take a fictional product from one of his favorite movies and turn it into the real deal, he went for it. Hottelet, a graphic designer based in Oakland, CA, is the founder of Omni Consumer Products, a company that specializes in "defictionalization." What exactly does that involve, you ask? Just what it sounds like: Hottelet takes products from movies and TV shows that don’t actually exist in the real world, and, well, makes them exist.

Hottelet’s first product, which launched in November 2007, was Brawndo, the supercharged energy drink from the cult comedy Idiocracy. It was a huge success - especially among young male gamers, surprise! - because of its tie-in to the movie, its massive caffeine content (the equivalent of about four cans of Mountain Dew, Hottelet says), and the fact that it actually tastes good. A year later, Hottelet launched Sex Panther cologne from the movie Anchorman ("60 percent of the time, it works every time"). And he doesn’t plan to stop there.

On where the idea came from and how he made it happen:
"Sort of the a-ha moment was, I was reading something about the red stapler from Office Space, and how it didn’t exist before Office Space. Swingline only sold a black stapler or silver - just regular colors. Definitely not a red one, because gosh, who’s going to buy a red stapler? Then it was just figuring out the details. . . . I just started making phone calls. I mean, I’m just some guy with an idea, and they don’t know who you are. No one knows who you are. But you’ve got to just get ahold of the right people, and present your idea well."

On what the reaction has been to his products so far:
"The reaction has been really fantastic to everything I’ve done. People really appreciate the humor of it, and not just the humor, but the fact that they’re real products. I started doing this because it was a fun idea, but the best part of this whole thing is when people try it, and their faces just light up. There is no replacement for that at all."

On creating surprisingly high-quality products:
"I think a really key thing that makes this work is, I don’t care what the cost of goods is. I really don’t. What’s most important is producing something that is good that people will enjoy interacting with. You have to spend that much less effort convincing people that it’s good, because it is good. So I don’t have to sell anybody on anything. I wouldn’t be happy with just taking people’s money. I think that’s absolutely the wrong way to go about it - producing garbage and taking people’s money, that’s fail."

On how much he loves his job - and why he thinks you should love yours, too:
"I look at it as, if your work and your play is the same thing, then that’s the absolute best scenario you can come up with. My day consists of doing exactly what I want to do. And it is a lot of work, but I enjoy every drop of everything I do. I think a lot of times people hold onto things that don’t make them happy, but they’re comfortable with them, and I think that’s a mistake. I think the world would be an amazing place if more people did what they wanted to do instead of what they felt like they were supposed to do."

Lovely Kylie Minogue was getting a whole lot of male attention in Argentina yesterday, as men jumped on each other's backs to get a glimpse at the pop princess. She's over there on tour at the moment, and stepped out for a little shopping on her day off. The latest rumours are that Kylie is to host the 2009 Brit Awards alongside the hilarious James Corden and Mathew Horne of Gavin & Stacey fame.

Kylie worked with Mathew on The Kylie Show at the end of 2007, where he played her assistant in the comedy skits between songs. I think this sounds like a great presenting team, but what do you think? Does this whet your appetite for The Brit Awards?

Jessica Really Appeals to the Teens

Apparently Jessica and Cash didn't have time to take advantage of being in Paris after Eva and Tony's wedding, because the two were at the airport on their way out yesterday morning. And don't they just look thrilled as usual (though I'm loving her coat)? Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer may have been a bit overshadowed by the other Summer blockbusters, but the Teen Choice Awards committee took notice and nominated Jessica for 3 awards: Hissy Fit, Female Hottie, Action Adventure Actress. The show isn't until the end of August, but you can vote here. Mark my words, teens love Jessica, but she may have to lose to Seacrest in the Hissy Fit category.

Welcome To Week 33

Your Baby: Floating In Fluid

With less than two months to go, your baby weighs about 4.4 pounds (1996 grams) and is 18 inches (46 cm) long. If your baby is a boy, this is time when his testicles move into the scrotum. The baby has gotten big enough now that you may even be able to tell what part of the baby is moving or kicking such as foot, arm, and knee! There is just not as much room to move around now.

Your Body: Reducing The Risk Of Preterm Labor

Labor that begins before the end of the 37th week is considered "preterm" or "premature." Approximately 1 out of every 10 babies born in the United States is born preterm. No one knows the exact cause of preterm labor, but certain situations increase the odds for it. Those include the following:

Preeclampsia, a form of high blood pressure that can develop in the second half of pregnancy.
Maternal health problems such as kidney disease, diabetes, or heart disease.
Multiple pregnancy. About 97% of twin pregnancies, for instance, result in preterm labor.
Problems with the placenta, such as placenta previa or placenta abruptio.
Problems with the uterus, such as structural defects, an incompetent cervix, or fibroids.
Infections in the cervix moving up into the uterus.
Past preterm labor or delivery.
Short intervals (less than a year) between pregnancies.
Being younger than 18 or older than 40 during pregnancy.
PPROM (Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes).

Other possible culprits include vaginal infections, poor nutrition, stress, depression, smoking, and alcohol and drug abuse.

Warning signs for preterm labor include:

More than five contractions an hour, or contractions that get longer, stronger, and closer together
Abdominal cramps, pain, or pressure
Lower back pain
Spotting, bleeding, mucous, or watery discharge from your vagina
Ruptured membranes (leaking a large amount of fluid from the vagina)

If you have any of those signs before Week 37, you should contact your health care provider.

Many first-time moms wonder what a real contraction feels like, and how it differs from Braxton Hicks. Some even question how they will know when "it's time." For answers to these questions and more, check out signs of labor.

Weekly Tip

When the going gets tough, go to the movies. Many pregnant women we know enjoy taking an afternoon off and heading to a matinee. It's a great way to spend quiet time and to lose yourself. Be sure to see something light - a romantic comedy or family feature - and avoid the sappy or scary stuff. The last thing you want to do is end up in tears or have nightmares!

Welcome To Week 8

Your Baby: In A Heartbeat

It's been six weeks since conception and the embryo is just over 3/4 of an inch long or 20 - 24 millimeters. Its head is quite large compared with the rest of the body, but the body will catch up in another couple of months. Its ears and eyelids are beginning to develop, as are its fingers and toes. Its arms are growing and wrists and elbows are visible. Its heartbeat is fast -- about 150 a minute -- twice that of an adult's.

Your Body: Think Twice

Now that you're pregnant, it's important to pay extra attention to your daily activities. Much of what you do - good or bad - affects your growing baby. For most women, that means reconsidering some simple pleasures - drinking a glass of wine at dinner, downing more than one or two espressos, or dunking in a hot tub. Like most expectant mothers, you probably wonder which of these activities, among others, may or may not harm the new life inside you.

Without a doubt, you should give up alcohol, smoking, and using recreational drugs. For everything else, your best bet is to check in with your health care provider and read up on the do's and don'ts during pregnancy. Caffeine, for instance, probably won't harm your growing fetus if you keep your intake moderate. However, a recent study has implicated excessive caffeine intake during the first trimester as a potential cause for miscarriages. One or two cups of coffee a day is probably fine, but more than that could increase your risk of problems.

On That Note:

Another big question you might have is whether you can take any over-the-counter or prescribed medications. In general, don’t take over-the-counter medicines unless you really need them. Talk with your health care provider about what medications have the lowest risk of causing problems for your pregnancy.

Weekly Tip

Pamper yourself while you can. Put your feet up, take a bath, read a book, get a manicure, rent your favorite romantic comedy, or go away for the weekend with your spouse. A little self-indulgence never hurt anyone!

I've been to stand-up comedy auditions-these folks are a brave tribe of people! Imagine getting up in front of an audience that half expects you to suck, and killing them with hilarity instead. Although some of the funniest people I've ever known were women, it's still hard out there for a lady stand-up comic. Many say there's an unspoken rule about "one woman comic a night" at comedy clubs, and when they're there they have to face the preconception some people in the audience have that women just aren't funny-or shouldn't be funny. Katherine's Fascinating Year & Super Bad Mixup

I'm still recovering from last night's ER-like intense episode of Grey's where it looks like things with Izzie and George might be finally going in a better direction. For those of you who want to delve into the specifics of last night's show, click here. As for the day-to-day life of Katherine Heigl, an afternoon spent running errands with her fab Valentino bag might seem mundane if they were done by anyone else, but for her, it must have been fascinating. At least it would be according to Barbara Walters, who named Heigl one of the Ten Most Fascinating People of 2007. More important, Katherine is speaking out about all the VF drama. She wanted to clear the air on her recent statements and People reports:

"It's important to me to take a minute and clarify the quote about Knocked Up in Vanity Fair. I was responding to previous reviews about the movie the interviewer brought to my attention. My motive was to encourage other women like myself to not take that element of the movie too seriously and to remember that it's a broad comedy."

"Although I stand behind my opinion, I'm disheartened that it has become the focus of my experience with the movie. The truth is, it was the best filming experience of my career. Every person that was a part of making Knocked Up helped to encourage, support and inspire me. I never intended for anyone to think otherwise."

Found It! Daniel Meade's Desk Lamp

I'm a huge fan of Ugly Betty. I've been told that I even have an extra-loud belly laugh during the show. Besides admiring the great writing, acting, and physical comedy on the show, I've also been impressed with the thoughtful set design. While watching the show, I'd seen quite a few elements that seemed familiar, such as this orange lamp. I knew that I'd seen Betty's boss Daniel Meade's desk lamp before, but I couldn't quite remember where.

This saffron-shaded mushroom lamp is the Nesso Lamp ($339). Also available in white, it was designed by Giancarlo Mattioli in 1967, and is made in Italy by Artemide. You can also find this cool little table lamp (which can also be wall mounted), in the Twentieth Century Design Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
