Food & Wine's Top Tastes to Try in 2008

In their recent January issue, Food & Wine magazine released their annual 100 Tastes to Try. This year the tastes have been broken down into 15 categories ranging from food trips to new ingredients. I took a look through the list and here are some of the ones that are topping my personal list of tastes to try in 2008. I don't know how feasible some of them are, but I know I can cross a few of these off my list.

What Are You Looking Forward To in 2008?

Earlier this week I shared some of my hot gadget predictions for 2008, some of which were utterly foreseeable (for example the success and hype around the wireless Kindle reader is bound to make eReaders a heavily replicated device) and some were more hopeful (please, please let there be more flash based personal media players!). I want to know: What gadget and technological innovations are you looking forward to in the coming year?

Every year, my family always gives me a new calendar to adorn my walls. This year they surprised me with one made from my own photographs, however I would've been just as happy with one of the many foodie-friendly calendars out there. I love the Play with your Food calendar, as well as Salut! - a weekly planner that features vintage wine posters. Also, who could look past this daily cupcake calendar? You can have a new treat every day or every month, you decide! There are a lot of great photos to choose from, as well as some fantastic vintage ads. Buzz In: Your Entertainment Hopes for 2008

Happy New Year! As we ring in 2008, I'm leaving the Best of 2007 behind me and turning my attention to what movies, music, television shows, and books I'm most looking forward to in the new year. Over the coming days, I'll be sharing some of my thoughts on the most anticipated events of '08.

But first, I'm wondering: What are you most looking forward to, entertainment-wise, for this new year? What actors and actresses would you like to see get better jobs? Which movies do you hope will be hits (or flops)? And which TV shows do you think should get recognition while others fade away?

Here are a few of mine to get you started: I'm looking forward to the end (I hope) of the Hollywood writers' strike, the forthcoming premieres of Lipstick Jungle and Cashmere Mafia, the new crop of films at the Sundance Film Festival, and the May release of the big-screen Sex and the City.

Do You Have Any Geeky Resolutions For 2008?

Aside from the usual go to the gym more, eat more fruits and veggies and get more sleep New Year's resolutions, I've also got a long list of tech resolutions that I'm hoping to achieve in '08. First thing's first. . .Uploading all my holiday pictures to online albums to share with friends and family, as they usually sit on my camera for months after Christmas. After that I'm going to do a major virtual cleaning. . .Delete old emails and put them in appropriate folders, clean up my desktop, organize documents, bookmarks and the biggie-back-up my data. I also want to update the music library on my iPod, create a gadget-charging sanctuary in my apartment as well as give away and recycle old electronics. After wrapping-up our best of 2007 polls, I've realized that the past twelve months have been filled with incredible new devices, websites, applications, video games and software. Apple proved to be the ultimate mover and shaker in the tech industry with the innovative iPhone, Apple TV, the new MacBook Pro, the widescreen Nano, and the iPod Touch. . .Let's just hope Steve Jobs had a rockin' party last night to match his rockin' year! Hopefully, you were able to catch The Times Square New Year's Eve ball drop last night on TV or in person. This year, the world-famous event went green as the ball was covered with 672 Waterford crystal triangles and 9,576 state-of-the-art LED bulbs. The new and improved ball was twice as bright as last year's, creating more than sixteen million colors for a muti-colored masterpiece. Here's to a healthy, happy and exciting 2008!

Hot Gadget Predictions For 2008

Wondering what's going to be hot and not-so-hot in the upcoming year? Here are some of my gadget predictions for 2008!

OLED Televisions: Surprisingly OLED TV's weren't overly popular in 2007, even though they created quite the buzz with their super-slim design, energy saving technology, and exceptional screen quality. I can't help but think they are going to make a huge comeback in '08. Be sure to stay tuned for Samsung's latest prototype, a 31-inch OLED TV.

More Sleek and Stylish Storage Devices: For those of us who carry our portable storage devices on us 24/7, keep your eyes peeled for some fun new USB flash drives in '08. Check out these new flash drives from PQI called the Traveling Disk i201 which come in strawberry, pink, banana yellow, and blueberry blue colors. Storage capacity ranges from 1GB to 4GB.

Portable Media Players: Now that downloading movies off the net has become so quick and easy, more and more people will be investing in portable media players. Philips new flash based personal media player is fresh on the scene and is going to be a hot buy. With 2, 4 or 8GB capacities, a 3.5" LCD display, built-in speakers, and a five hour video life, you can't help but wish you got one for Christmas!

Fashionable and Functional Gadget Accessories: Gel cell phone cases became a growing trend towards the end of '07, so I'm sure we'll see more colors and designs in '08. With the debut of Kodak's chic new camera cases which were also a hit, you're guaranteed to see alot more custom-designed carrying cases for electronics throughout the year.

eReaders: With the release of Amazon's Wireless Reading Device, the Kindle last November, I couldn't help but get absorbed into the eReader frenzy. These handy devices are simple to use, lightweight and can hold over 200 book titles. . .It's time to say good-bye to our paperbacks and hello to the world of electronic-paper in 2008!

Fitness Games, Now That's NEAT-o

A new type of fitness motivator should be hitting stores in 2008. It's not a new gizmo or gadget promising to erase inches from your waistline, but rather a game, promising to make the whole weight loss feat fun.

The term 'NEAT' covers all physical activity that is not conscious exercise, especially since hitting the gym for a regular workout might be too much to expect for those returning to fitness. These new games will encourage small, everyday lifestyle changes, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking a few spaces away from a store entrance versus driving around to find the closest spot available.

Here are highlights:

Researchers have developed a computer game that translates physical activity into video games, such as races and logic puzzles. Dubbed Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT-o) games, they can be played on any hand-held personal digital assistant (PDA) with users wearing a lightweight, wearable sensor that detects movement like running, walking, bending over or even foot tapping.

That data is then transmitted to the PDA via a wireless connection, and the player can see his or her game avatar move in real-time to their movements. For example, in the race game, the player's physical activity propels the avatar around the track -- the more active the player is, the faster and farther the avatar goes.

What's more? The tester for the NEAT-o lost 40 pounds in five months! I am all for new ways to get people moving and since we (yes, me included) are all totally obsessed with our hand helds these days, I think the NEAT-o is a fabulous idea. Plus, I love saying neat-o!

Bush Gets Physical With Us

The Physical Activity Guidelines, which probably won't surface until 2008, are going to be guidelines for the amount of physical activity everyone should get to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It will be similar to what we see in the food pyramid and instead of daily recommendations for food, there will be recommendations for daily exercise (for example, 30 minutes per day will aid in the prevention of weight gain). Seems to me that the guidelines are not going to be rocket science but more science based with a heavy dose of common sense. This would be a much needed update for the American public as the last time we saw anything similar to the upcoming guidelines was a warning from the Surgeon General in the mid 1990s.

Fit's Take: While some may worry about big brother taking over (first with the possible ban on trans fat and now this). However, the guidelines are not meant to be strictly enforced and with an average of 60 million obese Americans, good solid recommendations to live by are a good thing.
