Bright Star: A Vibrant Love Story
I remember reading the poet John Keats's work as a college student, and I very specifically recall the page-long description of his life. Two facts dominate his bio: that he died young and that he fell in love with the girl next door, Fanny Brawne. It was obvious that a romantic love story existed in that bare-bones text — and filmmaker Jane Campion has brought it to life in Bright Star.
Jon Hamm Is a High Roller
It's always a good morning when you wake up to Jon Hamm news! The dreamy Mad Men star is set to leave Madison Avenue for a bit to join the cast of Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch. He'll join Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, and Abbie Cornish in a story that centers around a girl (played by Emily Browning) in a mental institution.
Bright Star — See It or Skip It?
Abbie Cornish and Ben Whishaw star in Bright Star, a look at poet John Keats' real life romance with Fanny Brawne. It showed at Cannes earlier this year, and is directed by Jane Campion. Slated for release in November in the UK, I'll definitely be seeing it as Ben is a fantastic young Brit actor, although the trailer doesn't make me anticipate the film a great deal.
Movie Preview: Jane Campion's Bright Star
Director Jane Campion won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay for The Piano (she was nominated for Best Director as well, losing out to Steven Spielberg for Schindler's List), and the trailer for her next film, Bright Star, already has some tongues wagging about "Oscar bait." The rich, dreamy quality to the film is certainly appealing, and the two stars at the center of the story, Abbie Cornish and Ben Whishaw, make for a sweet romantic pair. Whishaw plays the poet John Keats, "the dreamer," who falls in love with "a realist," Fanny Browne (Cornish).
Ryan Shows Off His Abs and Affection For Abbie
Ryan Phillippe showed off the results of all his time at the gym with a shirtless walk in LA on Saturday. Abbie Cornish was by his side in her cutout one-piece, and they kissed each other goodbye before Ryan went off on his motorcycle. We rarely get to see much PDA from Abbie and Ryan, who are going strong after their controversial start as a couple years ago.
Ryan Spends Time With Abbie Before Hitting the Gym Solo
Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish made their way around LA together over the weekend, stopping for lunch at Taste on Saturday and running errands on Sunday. He was by himself yesterday for a trip to the gym, showing off the guns that might come in handy for his potential role in a MacGruber movie. Ryan even treated himself to a little post-workout McDonalds — although it doesn't look like he needs help keeping his physique in shape, he could keep his meal under 300 calories if he knows what to order from the fast-food joint.
It's Ryan and Abbie's Turn to Cheer on Deacon
Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish were in the stands to see Deacon's Little League game in LA on Saturday afternoon. Usually Reese Witherspoon is the one bringing Deacon to baseball, but Ryan took over while she spent her weekend in NYC with Jake Gyllenhaal. Ava was also rooting for her brother when she wasn't chatting with a friend, while Abbie and Ryan offered a few pointers to Deacon from the sidelines.
DJ Hero Launches With a Star-Studded Bang
Guitar Hero's highly anticipated spinoff game, DJ Hero, launched in LA last night, already boasting quite the celebrity following. Eminem looked a lot more comfortable rapping with Jay-Z yesterday than he did at the MTV Movie Awards, though the show's writer admitted that the stunt was all staged and rehearsed. DJ AM showed off his real-life turntable skills for the crowd, which included Matthew McConaughey, Camila Alves, Abbie Cornish, and Ryan Phillippe.
Ryan's Wandering Eye Follows Abbie Back to LA
Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish were back in LA on Monday after spending a few days at the Cannes Film Festival. They were spotted hitting the party scene together, but apparently Ryan also had some fun without his girlfriend. He was seen getting friendly with a few other blondes while clubbing with Ne-Yo into the wee hours.
