With 10 Slots, Should Star Trek Get a Best Picture Nomination?

Now that the Academy will be selecting 10 Best Picture Oscar nominees instead of five, it opens up the possibility for certain films to be recognized that otherwise might be passed over. So far this year a few movies have resonated with critics and audiences alike, and perhaps none as much as Star Trek. Do you think Star Trek is worthy of a Best Picture nomination?

Best Picture Category to Include 10 Nominees at Next Oscars

For the first time since 1943, the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards will include 10 nominees instead of five. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis made the announcement today, and assured us that the outcome - just one Best Picture winner - will still be the same.

Ganis commented, "Having 10 Best Picture nominees is going allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize." It makes me wonder if Wall-E might have gotten a nomination if there were 10 slots at the last Oscars.

Wow - five more nominees. This should be interesting! Do you think it's good that the Academy will have more options for Best Picture? What other five movies from last year (so, in addition to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader and Slumdog Millionaire) would you have put in the Best Picture category if it allowed for 10 then?

Announcing the 2009 Oscar Nominations!

The 81st annual Academy Award nominations were announced this morning and many of the beloved favorites from the Golden Globes are back with Oscar nominations. There is certainly no lack of love in the Academy for (you might have guessed) Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, Doubt and most of all for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - including a Best Actor nomination for Brad Pitt!

The Dark Knight was passed up in the Best Picture category, though Heath Ledger is in fact up for the Best Supporting Actor award - as is Robert Downey Jr. for his role in Tropic Thunder! And Kate Winslet is nominated, this time only up for a Best Actress award for her work in The Reader. Revolutionary Road is recognized in one of the major categories with a nod to Michael Shannon for Best Supporting Actor (the announcement of which was met with some happy shrieks this morning).

Buzz In: What Are Your Oscar Nomination Hopes?

The Golden Globes have come and gone and "Oscar buzz" surrounding certain actors (Kate Winslet, for example) and movies (Slumdog Millionaire, say) has reached a fever pitch. Bright and early tomorrow morning we'll learn who and what is nominated for Hollywood's prestigious Academy Awards. Where do your hopes lie for this year's nominations?

The Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress categories for the Golden Globes included comedic and dramatic actors but I have a feeling Tom Cruise won't be nominated for a Supporting Actor Oscar. What other actors and actresses would you like to see in these categories?

Last year Diablo Cody won Best Screenplay for Juno - what movie do you think deserves this award this year? I'm guessing The Duchess will nab a nomination for Best Costumes (or at least I hope it does!); are there other films that you think are also deserving? According to Variety, the Weinsteins are making a bunch of their movies into stage musicals, starting with Finding Neverland, and later including Shakespeare in Love, Chocolat and Cinema Paradiso, among others.
Kevin Bacon is joining Renee Zellweger and Chris Noth in My One and Only, writes ComingSoon.
Sarah Silverman, Niecy Nash, Rashida Jones, and Norm McDonald are among the panelists for TBS's new version of Match Game, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
Annoyed with how slowly MTV has been moving on their movie, Motley Crue is looking for a new partner to help them get the project done, Billboard reports.

Wilmer Valderrama will star in a one-hour comedy pilot for Fox called The Emancipation of Ernesto, writes MediaWeek.
Viral video director Wayne McClammy is on a roll: in addition to directing Cool School, he just sold a comedy script to MGM and will most likely direct that one as well. According to Variety, his movie is titled Le Car and follows "an unconventional group of CIA agents."
The AP has the news that a whole slew of Hollywood folks will be getting stars on the Walk of Fame next year, like Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Felicity Huffman, Tim Burton, Cameron Diaz and The Village People.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has altered the rules for the Oscars so that "the Original Song category will only allow a maximum of two nominated songs from any one film," so movies like Enchanted or Dreamgirls won't dominate the category, Zap2It writes.
TV Guide points out that the Sesame Street guest stars for next season - Jessica Alba, David Beckham, and Heidi Klum, among them - are pretty darn hot for a kids' show.

Fab Flash: Writers' Strike Could Mean No Awards Red Carpet(!)

We already have less Gossip Girl episodes to look forward to than we should. Now, as we near the beginning of next year and awards season, the deadlocked writers' strike may be putting even more kinks in the works: red-carpet fashion might just be a thing of the past.

Writers are already set to picket the Golden Globes on Jan. 13, and the Oscars are soon after on Feb. 24. Hollywood insiders are predicting that this could be a red carpet-less awards season, because the writers expect actors to refuse to cross the picket lines.

Imagine a world without Reese's yellow Nina Ricci dress or Gwyneth's pink Ralph Lauren gown - what a sad, sad world indeed.

Now that we know who won at the 2007 Oscars, a lot of you are probably looking to catch up on your Oscar-movie viewing. Well, you're in luck, because most of the winning movies that aren't still in theaters are out on DVD and just waiting to be added to your Netflix queue. Here's a look at all of the Oscar-winning films now available for home viewing.

The Departed
Oscars: Best Adapted Screenplay, Achievement in Film Editing, Best Director for Martin Scorsese, and Best Picture

Trust me: Just watch The Departed once, and you'll understand what all the fuss is about. The fast-paced drama isn't terribly deep: A good cop (Leonardo DiCaprio) goes undercover with a mobster (Jack Nicholson), who has his own man (Matt Damon) inside the force. But the intricately woven plot and masterful performances, particularly by supporting cast members like Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin, prove that this movie deserves all of the Oscars it won.

Little Miss Sunshine
Oscars: Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin

Skillfully mixing pathos with absurd comedy, Little Miss Sunshine tells the story of one family's quest to get bespectacled Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine competition on time. In an astounding cast (Alan Arkin, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear), Steve Carrell is perhaps the most impressive as a suicidal Proust scholar forced to live with his sister's bizarre family. As a special bonus, the DVD features four alternate endings to the movie.

Babel
Oscars: Best Score

Though it didn't take home the Best Picture trophy, Babel has gotten a lot of buzz for its universal themes and good-looking cast. Set in three continents and featuring five languages, the film follows four different stories revolving around the aftermath of a shooting in the Moroccan desert. The strong performances, compelling story, and sharp cinematography make it a must-see. For a more in-depth look at Babel, check out my review.

An Inconvenient Truth
Oscar: Best Documentary and Best Song

He may have lost the presidential election, but Al Gore can now say he's the only candidate to have ever won an Oscar. Gore's pet project tackles the important issue of climate change with compelling facts and a great soundtrack. Like a great documentary should, An Inconvenient Truth will make you care about the film's concerns while also keeping you thoroughly entertained.

Marie Antoinette
Oscar: Best Costumes

The bright, beautiful period clothes featured in Sofia Coppola's stylized depiction of the young Marie Antoinette are impressive enough to warrant a viewing of the film. Kirsten Dunst stars as Marie, the naive Austrian princess who became the Queen of France at age 19. The film follows her betrothal to Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman) at age 15, through her reign as Queen and the eventual fall of Versailles.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Oscar: Achievement in Visual Effects

While I can't recommend this movie for its compelling plot, the second film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has plenty of eye candy, including star Johnny Depp and astounding special effects. (It was also nominated for art direction.) In this well-conceptualized fantasy world, you get everything from regal, tall-masted ships to creepy sea monsters and nautical costumes, all of which help give the special-effects-heavy movie a unified look and feel.

First, I made some predictions about who would win, which turned out to be about 67 percent accurate. Not too shabby, but not nearly as good as LegallyBlonder, who won our ballot contest. Congrats!

Buzz Oscar News Roundup, 2/26

Ryan Gosling bet his friends he wouldn't win an Oscar, Starpulse reports, so at least he won something.
Variety is reporting that the early ratings for ABC's Oscar broadcast are slightly higher than last year's but lower than 2005.
The Washington Post thinks the Oscars were long and boring, while USA Today calls Ellen's hosting a bright spot.
A Reuters story about a historian's objection to The Lives of Others includes this quote from Oscar-winning director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck: "I'm delighted to have this wonderful golden phallus in my possession at last."
Hollywood Reporter has lots of quotes from Oscar winners, including Alan Arkin's comment that he won because he's 72: "Everyone thinks I'm going to keel over in a few years."
According to the LA Times, The Departed proves that not trying to win an Oscar might actually help win one.
And Variety points out that The Departed's DVD sales are going to go through the roof.
As Jennifer Hudson rules the Oscars, Fantasia Barrino heads to Broadway, reports Variety.
Somehow, Ghost Rider tops the box office during a weekend of honoring really good movies, reports USA Today.
