Movie Preview: Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell

Before there was the Spider-Man franchise, Sam Raimi was directing great horror-genre cult classics like Army of Darkness and The Evil Dead series. I think it's safe to say there will be many Raimi fans who are excited to see him return to horror flicks with the upcoming Drag Me to Hell.

Starring Alison Lohman and Justin Long, the movie is based on a short story written by Raimi and his brother. The trailer is . . . interesting. It's about a bank officer (Lohman) who denies the creepiest old lady ever a loan and then the old lady puts a curse on her (maybe Lohman's character should have watched Yes Man). It's campy and a little over-the-top in spots, but that's Raimi's style. The movie hits theaters May 29. To check out a preview, read more.

Joaquin, Mark and Jennifer Make Red Carpet Reservation

Reservation Road premiered in LA last night, bringing out the movie's four big name stars. Joaquin, Mark, Jennifer and Mira all looked happy to be reunited on the red carpet, but I'm sure they were all missing their other all star costar, Elle Fanning. Jennifer Connelly was obviously too busy reveling in her new deal to be the face of Balenciaga to realize that the designer's runway look doesn't translate too well to the everyday premiere. Two words: Hot mess. With all the super dramatic movies opening this weekend it's hard to choose just one. What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

It's Tuesday, which means your Netflix queue is about to get a bit fresher and longer. I've gone through today's new DVD and Blu-ray releases and have some recommendations for what you should rent next.

The Proposal

This Summer's super successful rom-com, The Proposal, stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in a pretty predictable scheme (you know, girl proposes to boy to avoid deportation), but I enjoyed this surprisingly funny movie. I tend to like both Reynolds and Bullock in general, and their chemistry in this one is pretty irresistible. It was also an audience-pleaser, raking in enough money in ticket sales to make it one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time.

Drag Me to Hell

Drag Me to Hell, starring Justin Long and Alison Lohman, earned props in the horror genre for its clever premise and witty dialogue. Lohman stars as Christine, a bank teller whose life takes a turn for the terrifying when she is cursed by a gypsy. Long plays her boyfriend and sidekick who tries to help her regain control and banish the spirits.

I've heard this one is more fun than scary, and it marks Sam Raimi's return to the camp-horror genre (he's behind the Evil Dead franchise) and a respite from the Spiderman movies.

Land of the Lost

In Land of the Lost, Will Ferrell stars as Rick Marshall, who finds himself stuck in a parallel universe littered with dinosaurs and ape men. With his sidekicks Holly and Will, the trio takes on the adventure of a lifetime and try to find their way back home.

The Summer blockbuster didn't do too well in theaters, making some wonder whether Ferrell fatigue had set in. However, the fun casting of Danny McBride and Anna Friel as Will and Holly could make this movie watchable.

DVD extras include deleted scenes, a Danny McBride featurette, and a Devil’s Canyon Gift Shop Commercial and Tour.

Inspired: Patterned Lampshade in Drag Me to Hell

I must admit that I am dying to see Drag Me to Hell. I love the premise of the film, which seems especially relevant in today's foreclosure-prone real estate market. In the film, a loan officer (Alison Lohman) evicts an old woman from her home, and is then cursed because of it. Alas, I am the biggest scaredy cat when it comes to scary movies, and I doubt I'd ever sleep again if I saw the movie.
Still, I'm really enjoying many of the photos from the movie's set. I love the patterned lampshade in this photo, and inspired, decided to find some more. The first one that I found was the Selsey Mibo Shade ($100), which is similar to the shade in the film.

Halle's Fire Is Just Getting Warmed Up

Halle's dream co-star Benicio skipped the LA premiere of their new movie Things We Lost in the Fire last night, but luckily she had her sexy baby daddy to keep her company instead. Gabriel wasn't the only hot thing at the premiere last night - when asked about being pregnant, Halle said, “When you’re pregnant, you’re always hot! Always hot. So I’m like, on fire right now.” Between all the fabulous things happening in her personal life and career, we're going to have to agree with her on that one.

Halle Shows off her Baby Bump with Dream Costar

Halle Berry showed off her growing baby bump at the premiere for her new film Things We Lost in the Fire in NYC this weekend. Jennifer Hudson looked beautiful in purple while Halle looked cute and happy with her costar, Benicio Del Toro. Halle recently spoke with Oprah about her excitement in getting to work with Benicio. Here's more:

Halle on Working with Benicio: "For about at least five years before we had this chance to work together, people would always say, 'Who do you want to work with?' And I would always say, 'Benicio Del Toro, never really imagining how that would happen or if it would come to pass."
Halle on Benicio the Comedian: "When you work on a movie that has the gravity of this movie, you need someone to lighten it up. He had a wonderful way of just making us all smile or finding the light touch in every scene, because every scene can't be heavy and downtrodden."

Not only are Halle's dreams of having a baby finally coming true, but the Oscar winner also has a gorgeous man in her life and is getting to work with her favorite actors. After some really rocky relationships, Halle must be feeling great that her life has turned out so fortunate. MK and A Are Black Belts at Jenni Kayne

Mary-Kate and Ashley weren't too worried about being top twinsies with their black belted outfits for the Jenni Kayne Store Opening on Friday night. I guess being life twinsies sort of rules matching clothes out in terms of importance. I wish I could see more of Ashley's blue shoes, but I am loving the color from what I see, not so sure about her ribbon-y bag. Other negative Olsen point? MK needs a brush. Also at the opening were Rebecca Gayheart (who will literally never miss a party) and ~~Mrs. Ari~~ Perrey Reeves. Clutches for everyone! Even in their famously sky-high heels, the Olsen girls looked teensy next to the rest of the partygoers.

John, Kristen & Joshua Are Total Sickos

Michael Moore's latest political documentary, Sicko, premiered this week and some of his Hollywood stars were out to celebrate. I must say that I love seeing ~~Pacey Whitter~~ Josh Jackson out anywhere, not to mention Kristen Bell post-Veronica Mars. Also, it's always amazing to see Mr. John Cusack. Yay for Say Anything crushes.
