news of Betty's "prettier" look next season broke, I have to admit that I've been a little bummed. It's not that I don't understand that characters evolve, it's just that Betty has always been so heroic because she's a person of substance, one who doesn't depend on her looks to make her life full. Ugly Betty is an import, a rewrite of a hit telenovela from Colombia,
Betty La Fea.

I totally disagree with you. In the original series Betty did go through a whole transformation both emotionally and physically. The reason for her physically transformation was so Betty could feel more comfortable in her skin. She also did not marry the Daniel character right away. He suffered for her and realized way before she was "pretty" that he loved her no matter what. It was up to her to accept him. I personally think they make America Ferrera look like a clown in this version. I think see is due for a makeover.
1I'm fine that they evolve her look. Braces do come off and people get their hair cut.
2I think they should have kept the glasses though. It didn't "uglify" her but was part of her look.
I'm glad Betty is getting a little makeover! I was really tired of her braces, but I also think she should have kept her glasses.
3I think they needed to do something with her. As Zivanod noted, braces do eventually come off. And people do change their look. Just because she is getting a makeover doesn't mean she can't still be amazing, competent person.
4That's the reality of life, that external beauty is more important than inner beauty. It's not fair but that the way it is. People gave more important to looks than there souls.
5i think it's good that they've taken off the braces because it's unnatural to think she'd have them on for that long...most people only have them for a year or two, maybe three max
and a hair update is fine as long as they don't make it supermodel hair...something that's realistic but an improvement would be okay
and i agree, keep the glasses...maybe give her cooler ones but it's too much too soon to think she'd get contacts and do all this other stuff
6I would have liked a subtle transformation. Not all hair and braces and clothes at once and IMO they should have started beautifying her bit by bit in the second season.
7I'm anxious to see her transformation
8Genesis, I agree, a more gradual "makeover" would have been more realistic. But, DivaLove, why can't she be beautiful on the outside AND have a beautiful soul, too? They aren't mutually exclusive things.
9i've always wondered why betty had braces and when she would lose them, but i hope she keeps her glasses and outfits at least. i love the stylist they have. betty looks really high fashion to me. it would be cool if she got really dressed up for a special occasion so that everyone sees that betty can be beautiful in the traditional sense, but choses to stick to her own style on a daily basis.
10I agree with bebeitalia. The original 'Betty La Fea' was actually a much better story overall than the American version, and they had the male lead fall in love with her because of who she was, despite her looks and his family and friends' horror at the thought of him loving someone like her. And her transformation mirrored what was going on inside her as she came to accept herself and feel more confident, so it was more of a reflection of what was going on inside her. So it was not at all a case of "change your looks and be happy". The original Betty La Fea is still a much better story than this long, drawn-out Ugly Betty series.
11oh I hope Betty doesn't marry Daniel....that would be weird.
12she def needed a makeover. how could she work in the fashion biz and not pick up a few clues...
13I think that she should not receive a magical make-over montage sort of thing. I think that she should have gone through a transformation. Like getting the braces removed and fixing her hair, but it Betty sheds the glasses and the amazingly colorful clothes I am going to be so mad. Ho can it be called Ugly Betty if the character looks like America looks in photo shoots. I feel that the make-over in this season may possibly be Betty's way of jumping the shark.
14I totally agree with her losing the braces. She can't wear them forever. She should have kept the glasses because they are her signature stand out piece.
15I won't be watching. I'd been wanting her to get a makeover, too, and I was glad that I had to be challenged to continue to see her as smart and desirable despite her appearance.
Outer beauty is not more important than inner beauty. If you doubt that, have a look at the people who have made the most important contributions to the betterment of any society. The so-called lookers would probably be a far lesser number. Not because people with outer beauty aren't capable of greatness, but because achieving greatness doesn't depend on how you look - we all have access to that.
I don't know why they made this decision, but for now I'm disappointed. They could have updated her look without making her prettier (removing the braces, bobbing the hair), but a beautifying makeover is a huge mistake. It will reinforce the messages they first claimed they were trying to stand against.
16I don't think she needed a make over, I think she needed to get rid of her braces. And I still think all these pictures are spoilers! aaahhhh!
17I, too, love that Betty has a unique look but I think it is unrealistic to think that she will keep the same look for the run of the show. It's been too long for her to have braces anymore and her sister is a hairstylist -- it's about time she had a new 'do. =)
18i was SO sick of those horrible bangs and the glasses. keep the glasses, just get a new style. people get new glasses every 2-3 years, no?
19I'm glad shes losing the braces but I really think they should have kept her glasses
20I think her look should definitely evolve into a more mature young woman. We all go through it. It's only natural that she should. The braces need to come off and her sister needs to giver her a haircut, but not the glasses! Maybe some new frames would be a good choice.
21Braces come off. People do wear contacts. Hair gets cut. I think the braces have been long overdue for coming off. Glasses should have stayed. I think as long as we see the emotional transformation behind the physical, the show will be just fine. It's life. It's what happens. We live in a world where there are a slew of makeover shows and we all transform to become our beautiful selves whether by force or choice. Her character has more growing to do. Growth within eventually shows in appearance.
22I'm glad she's having a bit of a make-over. Given how astute she is, it seems improbable that after working for years at a high fashion magazine she would be completely oblivious to her appearance.
23I'm glad she's getting a makeover. It doesn't making any sense that she'd still be dressing so bad. If she still wants to be "original", she could do some kind of funky vintage thing. What really annoyed me about her wardrobe is that there was no point to it. I could see her dressing like when she was a teenager, but once she started working at the magazine, she would notice how awful her outfits look.
24So will they change the name of the show now to "Not so Ugly Betty"?
25Hey - at least the show is realistic in the idea that everyone changes. It just happens. I don't mind the makeover at this point in the series but I do think they should keep the glasses.
26They should have kept the glasses, and the outfits.
27Betty was her own person and an individual!! sure in real life she's pretty but this was a story-she wasn't to be like everyone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
28I agree with bebeitalia and couture concier in the Telenovela Betty went through an emotional and physical transformation. And I just loved that Novela I am actually watching it for the third time right now. And it's one of the reasons I haven't paid much attention to any to the other versions including the Mexican version, though i do recognized Ugly Betty's originality in its story lines but it is still not as good as the original, in my opinion.
29I'm pretty sure in pics I seen of the cast filming, Betty still has glasses on. America probably just took them off during breaks. And I agree, I wish there had been more of a gradual change over the seasons, you know, each season changing something. I don't think this is Betty giving into what everyone else says she should do, but something that rubs off on you when you're in certain situations. She's in the fashion industry (even if she doesn't want to be forever), and she has to look pulled together and professional.
30Then again, maybe she's doing it to get back with Matt? Well, whatever it is, I like the new look.
NO! I don't even watch the show, but why make her over? This judging people on how they look is getting ridiculous, th show's called UGLY Betty, not "Professionally made over, slightly unattatractive Betty". Tha e show was making a point, now ... maybe pointless, like the makeover.
31excuse me, but Ugly Betty is an american knock off of a show about a loser who gets a make-over and rules the world. I was very frustrated with them for keeping her ugly for 3 seasons, that completely ruined the whole concept of the show.
32Well, the fact of the matter is that Betty, the character herself, has always wanted to transform. The braces alone were a sign of this. The braces had to eventually come off, people don't wear them forever.
33It's also natural for style--especially when working at a fashion magazine--to evolve.
These are natural truths to the character.
Take comfort in the fact that she is still a NORMAL looking woman. Her hair is cute, and she's dressed well, but she's still a short, curvy, latina who isn't a sex object like Salma Hayek or Penelope Cruz or Shakira...and she's still holding down a major show as its central focus. She lives and she loves regarldless of her appearance. Love it and embrace it, or change the channel!
I think she deserves a little makeover. Have you ever seen What not to Wear?? Everyone who goes on that show feels 100% more confident afterwards. Betty has proved to be a great character without the makeover, but it wouldn't be realistic if she worked in the fashion industry for years & never learned how to dress. Right?
34They've only aired two new episodes so I assume that picture above is from later on in the season, or maybe it's a picture of America Ferrera going into make-up, because so far Betty's "makeover" has not been that drastic. They gave her some new glasses in an updated shape, but they are still red. She still has her braces. Her hair is a little less frizzy and she parted her bangs differently. She looks more grown-up. Oh, and she wore ONE non-crazy outfit that was still pretty colorful. So nothing big yet.
