Mar 26 2007 - 7:30am Before it was a
fantastic TV show, Friday Night Lights was a
bestselling nonfiction book about a Texas high school football team that became a
2004 movie starring Billy Bob Thornton. The movie premieres on FX tonight, and it's a great mix of character drama and thrilling football action.
The movie sticks closer to the book than the TV series does, but both show the impact of the team's victories — and defeats — on a dusty, depressed small town that doesn't have a lot else going for it.

What a great movie this is--a wonderful blend of on and off field action. H. G. Bissinger's book is even better. He sets scene and captures character in such detail that you feel as though you are sitting in the locker room with the players or riding along the streets of Odessa, TX with the townies. And the spin-off show is my favorite program on television right now. I'm rooting for at least one more season for Eric and Tami Taylor, Matt and Julie and all of the other characters who make this show work so well. Go Panthers!
1Loved this movie.
