2009 Tribeca Film Festival Spotlight: Kate Hudson's Cutlass

I've been perusing the long list of interesting-looking movies scheduled for this year's Tribeca Film Festival, which continues in New York this week. It will be a while till many of the buzzworthy feature films hit theaters, so I'm excited that some of the festival's short films are online for anyone to view. One of those I was particularly curious to see is Cutlass.

The 16-minute film marks Kate Hudson's directorial debut, and she also wrote the screenplay. Compared to most shorts (at least the ones without celebrity directors), this movie has a pretty amazing cast, including Kristen Stewart, Kurt Russell, Virginia Madsen, Dakota Fanning, and Chevy Chase. The quick summary of the story: A mom (Madsen) can relate to her daughter (Fanning) about wanting to buy something really, really badly. The cinematography looks gorgeous, as does Stewart, who plays a younger version of Madsen's character and is kind of a knockout as a blonde.

Kate, Kirsten and Rita Play Director

Kate Hudson, Kirsten Dunst and Rita Wilson made it a black and white affair at the premiere of their Glamour Reel films last night in L.A. Kate's film, Cutlass co-starred her "dad" Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning and her boyfriend Dax Shepard (the latter two were no shows last night). Birthday boy Chevy Chase was also back in action as one of the stars in Kate's film. Kirsten's movie Welcome starred Winona Ryder and Rita's film called The Trap starred Jeanne Tripplehorn. All three directors looked very happy to debut their hard work. You can check out the films on Glamour's site and even better - when you download the flicks they donate some money!

Kate and Ryder in NYC Now, LA Bound

Earlier this week Kate Hudson was in Boston running with her co-star Dane Cook and yesterday she was in NYC with her main man Ryder. The twosome went for a coffee run (ya know, the usual) during the sunny city day. The actress recently took on the role of director (where she cast her "dad" Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning and her new boyfriend Dax Shepard). The premiere for her short Glamour magazine movie called, Cutlass will be October 9th in LA. For those of us not attending the premiere or in the hometown of the stories where the film were based and will be screened, we'll get to check out the flick on Glamour's website soon.

Kate Puts On Her Serious Directing Face

Kate Hudson is hard at work in Pasadena on the set of her directorial debut, a short film based on a reader-submitted essay for Glamour, but unlike many first time directors making shorts, she's got some serious star power in her hands. I guess it doesn't hurt to know people in Hollywood. Her movie stars her surrogate dad Kurt Russell, the surprisingly older looking (she's growing up!) Dakota Fanning and Virginia Madsen. It must feel weird for Kate to be the boss for a change, especially to the man who raised her. Hey, she definitely looks cute doing it.

Kate Hudson continued showing off her cute Spring wardrobe yesterday in NYC after a trip to the gym in her exercise clothes. We saw lots of Kate in the city when she filmed Bride Wars, which is out on DVD - right in time for wedding season. Also while Kate's in the city, her directorial debut Cutlass is at the Tribeca Film Festival and online now so you can check out Kate showing off yet another of her skills. Kate Hudson Happy in NYC and Headed to Palm Springs

Never one to let a breakup get her down, Kate Hudson was looking sunny out in NYC yesterday and shopping for groceries at Whole Foods. Whether her extra friendliness with ex Chris Robinson means anything or if that's just the kind of relationship they have, I do like that she can keep a smile on her face. Plus, she's got something fun to look forward to - the short film Cutlass that she directed for Glamour last year will be showing at the Palm Springs International ShortFest at the end of the month alongside movies directed by Kirsten Dunst, Robert Redford, and others.

Kate's Bikini Is Packed As She Says Adios to Miami

Kate Hudson laughed her way into a private airport in Miami yesterday in yet another loose-fitting ensemble, though we all saw her show off a hot (not pregnant looking) bikini body by the pool on Monday. Now we'll just have to save all of our speculation for whether she and Owen are back together and the rumors are starting to get hotter. While she had her own reason to be in Florida over the weekend - debuting Cutlass, the short film she directed, at the Miami Film Festival - the latest is that the two had multiple rendezvous. Most notable was when they showed up to dinner together with Owen's Marley and Me costars Jennifer Aniston and Eric Dane. We're going to wait on confirming this one, but it sounds like it might be only a matter of time until we get some more proof.

Kate Hudson stopped by Ellen yesterday to chat about and promote her short film, Cutlass but of course she couldn't help gushing about Ryder just a little.

She talked about how Ryder cracks her up and how he thinks the "posparazzi" are going to end the world. Kate also explained what we've been dying to know - why she doesn't cut that hair? As expected, he wants to keep it long like his Daddy's which is cute but apparently he was ready to cut it off if he could get a mohawk so Kate decided maybe the hair cut could wait for now. We're thinking Ryder and Maddox Jolie-Pitt should have a playdate.

Chevy Chase Is Back in Action

It may feel like Chevy Chase hasn't been around for awhile, but this has been quite the week for him. He celebrated his 64th birthday on Monday, and on Tuesday he headed to the premiere of Cutlass, Kate Hudson's short film that he starred in. However, the biggest news of the week is that Chevy is going to join the cast of Brothers and Sisters. He'll be playing Sally Field's boyfriend from high school. Sounds juicy and we love that Chevy is back in action and looking so stylish as well. Welcome back CC!
